Age upon Rescue: 13
Date of Rescue: April 5th, 2020
Date of Passing: September 19th, 2022
Family: Kasia Kenitz
Fans: Tanya Nielsen, Shirley Burnett

Tribute: On September 19th, Kasia fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Pinky.

She shared,

"Pinky, my little funny scruff. She went by Pinky, Pinker, Pumpkin or Princess, to some she was a

little “Gremlin” (the cute kind of course). I feel so lucky to have witnessed how she blossomed

and revealed her incredible personality to me, and she had so much of it. She was feisty but

gentle, playful but relaxed, smart but surprisingly resistant to learning commands. Always ready

to go out and explore, unless it was too early in the morning, and she wanted to have a lie in…

princess. But then, my adventurous Pinker was totally up for hiking 10 miles in a day, in her

fancy hiking booties. We explored numerous hiking trails, but nothing can top our Wyoming

adventure.

Pinky had so much personality. I miss her happy howls that she would do after getting back

home from a walk. I miss her “Hi mum, I’m gonna lie down as close to you as I physically can,

but please don’t bother me” look. Or the “Are you still here? Ok, good. I go back to sleep then”

sudden head lift. Or just her entire body wiggling with excitement. I miss her crazy zoomies

after she had a bath, which she hated. Or the crazy zoomies and barks during our morning play

time. Her joyful face during our morning beach walks made even the grumpiest grump smile.

She would accompany me to work and welcome everyone who entered my office or lab,

bringing a little smile up on everyone’s faces. I’m not even sure if she was allowed in all those

spaces, but everyone loved her, so we got away with a lot of things.

It took me a long time to realize that I’m her forever human, mostly because I was afraid of

feeling how I feel now. But that was silly, and very quickly I gave her my whole heart. She was

my perfect adventure companion. She was my perfect lazy Sunday companion. She was just

perfect to me. Pinky gave me so much love, joy and laughter. I loved her so much - I had to stop

myself from squeezing her every time I saw that cute little snout. Thinking about it, I probably

had as much separation anxiety as she did. Losing her broke so many hearts. She was my little

furbaby soulmate and I don’t think I will ever stop missing her."

Roxy

Age upon Rescue: 15
Date of Rescue: April 5th, 2020
Date of Passing: April 27th, 2021
Family: Kasia Kenitz
Fans: Marta Palos, Shirley Burnett
Tribute: On April 27th, Kasia fulfilled her promise to Roxy.

Roxy was relinquished back to us just a few short days prior to her passing because she was allegedly not a good fit for her new family after two month's time. We asked they return both Pinky and Roxy, seeing as they were a bonded pair. It seems Roxy's behavior was a sign of distress and if you believe the world works in mysterious ways, it was so that she could pass in the arms of her dedicated foster mom of a year, Kasia.

We knew she had a liver mass and we had recently repaired a fairly large inguinal hernia, so every day we had with her was a gift. Kasia knew this, and she writes in refection,

“Last week we had to say goodbye to our most gentle, loving yet tough Roxy. I would have never expected that she would stay with me for almost a year! Despite not so positive medical predictions, she blossomed and gained so much energy, enough to even run around on her 3 little legs. Roxy was a warrior, loving life to the fullest! She loved being spoilt with cuddles and treats, and loved sunbathing. But most of all, she loved cuddling with her sister Pinky and being up no to good when I wasn’t looking. Her cute little face just made it impossible not to want to put her in your lap and snuggle. Saying goodbye to both Pinky and Roxy and sending them off with their new family was incredibly hard, and little did I know they would come back to me soon enough.

I feel incredibly lucky and grateful to have had a chance to have Roxy back, even if it was for just a few days, and to be there to give her cuddles during her last moments. She passed away being incredibly loved. Pinky and I will miss her dearly.”

Tribute: On November 28th, April and Steve fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Norton.

They shared,

"Norton was a wonderful addition to our family for 3 1/2 years. He wasn’t a very active guy, slept most of the time, enjoyed his walks and his meals. He became ill a few weeks before he passed and was diagnosed with diabetes and a bad UTI. Around a week later he quit eating which is something he had never done. Back at the vets, he was dehydrated and tests showed his kidneys were shutting down with his white blood cell count through the roof. Given his age and he also had a heart murmur, the vet was unsure if she could help him. He indicated that he had given up so he is now our little angel looking down on us. We all miss him dearly, particularly the little dance he would do at dinner. His non FF Sophie still checks his bed for him. We’re all heartbroken."

Tribute: On July 6th, Randolph and Leslie fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Daisy.

They shared,

"Daisy joined our family a little over 3 years ago. She had graceful long legs, taller than you would expect for a little, and a smart black and white patched coat, all-in-all the appearance a graceful senior lady dog. Her black face had two white spots over the cheeks, looking like dimples, and spots above the eyes looking like white eye brows. Daisy was nearly deaf when we got her and we thought this might explain why she almost never barked. She would occasionally let out series of yips while dreaming however. Daisy loved walks, going for rides in the car, and accompanying us when we went out on errands. It didn’t seem like Daisy had been a lap dog in her previous life, but with coaching she learned how to arrange her legs to sit on laps and watch tv.

Daisy was a gentle dog and very sweet. She loved giving kisses and face hugs. She got along well with other pets and quickly became friends with our Pomeranian, Cassie, whom we adopted from Frosted Faces. The two often snuggled together. Daisy was generally deferential to Cassie, except at meal times when she used her long legs to tower over Cassie. Daisy took it very hard when Cassie died much too early from thrombocytopenia this year and kept looking for her around the house for several day after her friend was gone. Unfortunately, our time with Daisy began when she was 12 or 13 years old, and age took its toll. She developed heart failure and liver issues that required medication soon after we adopted her and she gradually went blind. Early this year, she developed sarcomas in her hind legs that couldn’t be removed completely. She made the best of things even though she lost weight and energy, still giving kisses and loving meals until the end last week.

Daisy was a wonderful dog and a loving member of our family. We are ever grateful to Frosted Faces that we had the chance to know her, care for her and enjoy her affection in her last years."

"A love letter to our Bugsy (4/24/20-3/23/24)

On April 24th 2020, our world changed for the better when we welcomed you into our family, Bugsy Malone. We knew from the moment we saw you on VCAS’s website (she was the dog in the flower pot! 🤣 🌸) we had to make you ours. You gave us the best almost four years with your zooms around the house, screaming at us when we walked in the door, barking at the blow dryer and “meeps” (talking) while walking around the house searching for mom. While there is a huge missing piece of our family now we are so glad that you are no longer in pain. Nights are much quieter without your snoring and quite boring without a midnight romp around the yard and bouncing on the bed with your ears flapping. We miss you so much our Bugolita and we can’t wait to hear and see you again in heaven.

Love,

Mom, Mimi, and your brothers 💕 🏡

PS- thank you Kelly and FF for answering our frantic phone call four years ago when we were trying to find out where VCAS sent our little “flower pot” girl. We wouldn’t have been able to love on her without you all. We would make that 6 hour road trip (both ways) all over again. 🤗 ❤️ 🐶 🏡"

Fans: Renata Santeli
Tribute: On October 29th, we fulfilled our promise to Roz.

Her mom shares,

"Today we helped Roz cross the rainbow bridge. Many of you know our story. She was a Foster...and then after having her in our care for a few months we noticed a mass growing. We found out it was an aggressive cancer just when her first adoption application came through. We couldn't imagine her trying to adjust to a new home when her time was limited...and we loved her so much. So we committed to be her hospice foster until the end.

She had ups and downs, some that I shared, but we had more good days than not. She seemed comfortable and happy. I worried I would not know when it was time and asked her to give me a clear sign. Three days ago her appetite was down (this girl loves her food) and I could tell she was not right. I had been in touch with the vet regularly with updates and pictures, and she felt she should see her based on my concerns. I took her in, and she was in pretty bad shape. Unable to stand on her back legs, low appetite, and her lovely eyes were so sad. The doctor broke the news to me that it might be time. They are so kind there. I knew in my heart it was time.

I brought her home to say good-bye to the family...we were all a little shocked because it was such a quick decline. I thought I would take her back this weekend, but it was like she knew it was time and she had to make it clear. After I got home yesterday, she could not get comfortable. I called College Animal Hospital and they were able to get her in right away the next day We barely made it. They told me that she was barely alive. And when I went in for them to give her the final dose, I stroked her head, but I could tell her spirit was already gone. Those incredibly sweet eyes were vacant. Our sweet Roz had crossed, and while barely with us six months, the heaviness in our heart is like we loved her a lifetime. We all wish she would have been in our life so much earlier...it was just too short.

Meeka

Date of Passing: May 24th, 2020
Family: Patrick & Denae George
Fans: Whitney Best
Tribute: On Sunday, May 24th, we fulfilled our promise to Meeka.

Somehow she was surrendered by her original family and adopted just in time for a fairytale ending. During "shelter in place" orders adoption number have sky rocketed and the vets have been backed up. As we vetted dogs who appeared more critical first, people wanted to adopt dogs that we didn't have worked up yet within days of shelter exit, and Meeka was one them. The family agreed to take her to her appointment for bloodwork and x-rays, and it didn't matter what was found, they wanted her no matter what. How cool is that?!

Unfortunately at that first appointment we learned that Meeka had insulinoma. We couldn't amputate her arm like we had planned and it immediately cut her time short with her family. They enjoyed her nonetheless! This week symptoms of a gall bladder mucocoele progressed and there was very little to do within reason. Her family had to let her go, but not without creating a lot of memories and making a lot of sacrifices to make Meeka know she was family!

Her family shares,
"Last night we lost our Meeka 💔😔 She had a fast decline over the weekend. We took her to the vet on Saturday where they took 2L of fluid from her abdomen. Her gallbladder had solidified and she was working hard to breathe. With all of her other issues surgery was not an option. We decided to spend the day making it her best- laying in the sun, taking her for a walk in her wagon and lots of cuddles.

We only had her for 6 weeks but she completed our family. We are heart broken not seeing her in her around the house. Grandma Potatoes is what we called her because she was an old lady and she was a sack of potatoes. My husband had to carry her around the house since she only had 3 working legs.

We are so thankful to be a part of this group and to have spent time with Meeka. We love and miss you big girl ❤️🐶"

Tribute: On May 23rd, Heather fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Gary.

She shared,

"Early this morning I had to say goodbye to my sweet Gary. Gary was rescued from Frosted Faces Foundation a little over 3 years ago, my “COVID baby.” Since going blind several months after adoption, he was highly dependent on me to anticipate his every need… to say we were close is an understatement.

We were away on vacation and returned home yesterday. I knew he had some changes but didn’t anticipate saying goodbye. The vet found him to be in heart failure and I decided to get him medicine there and monitor at home since he was often stressed being away from me.

As soon as I got home, I realized what a mistake that was. I rushed him back but he died on the way there. I am struggling with so much guilt for allowing my selfish desire to have a night with him to have led him to suffer in his final minutes. I also hate that I was away the week before he died. While I feel like I failed him, I hope he knew how loved he was❤️"

Tribute: Today, Yuan and Fangda fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Frasier.

They shared, "Mr. Frasier crossed the rainbow bridge today at 11:11AM EST in mommy and daddy's arms at the vet office in New Jersey. Once his ash comes back we will bring him back home to San Diego.

Mr. Frasier came to us for a fling on 4/18/2020 after his previous fling failed. He was the first dog we were introduced to - guess at that moment everything was already destined. Up until today, 12/15/2022, I was honored to have spent a total of 971 days with him and I can say without hesitation that those had been the best 971 days in my life. Together we moved across the coasts, set footsteps in CA, NJ, NY, CT, PA, MA, VT, and IA. We lived in four different residences, traveled between NJ and NY several times a week. We had been to the beaches, the mountains, the cities, and the farms. We also went through three emergency visits, plus numerous surgeries and rehabs. God, how I wish we could go through 1000x more of those minus the hospital parts if I had eternity with you.

Please do not blame us for being so selfish to have held onto you for too long, Frasier. Ever since he was diagnosed with severe cerebellar atrophy in early Feb this year, at which moment he was already paralyzed, we had been told to "look for the end goal". As hard as we fought, he had reached a point where a combination of 7 different medications and the wheelchair could no longer keep him comfortable, and the only kind thing we could do (which is not kind to us at all) was to let him go.

Last night he enjoyed a protein feast of raw oysters, sea scallops, lamb chops, and bison steaks. How unhealthy for a senior's sensitive GI system, but that was the least of concern, because at least he could cross with a full stomach. Please forgive me for how unimaginative I am, Frasier. I just could not think of anything else to do for you on your last night.

I always knew this day would come, but I was never ready. If reincarnation is real, please come back to mama, Frasier. If not, please meet me at the other end of the bridge when my day comes. Please. Please.

In the meantime, fly high and run free, my dearest baby. Until we meet again."

He only came when Tonio called him, lived in his room and became his shadow. He loved to do a happy dance when dinner time came 6 o'clock on the dot.

He had the cutest smile with the softest coat you could ever pet. His little snorts and snores will be missed. His little paw taps as he walks are still heard throughout the house. We all loved him ..even if he only loved Tonio lol.

Cashmere, Cash, Fatty, King Richard keep on dancing at 6 everyday over that rainbow bridge."

Tribute: On July 10th, Raeleine and Gilbert fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Princey.

They shared,

"On April 18th, 2020, we picked up two cuties that we thought would be a 2-week fling; however, sweet Princey stole our hearts and we just couldn’t let go. Officially adopted in May 2020, we became furever family to Princey and King.

Princey was the most energetic senior dog I’ve had to date. He loved to chase balls, including exhibiting his soccer skills by controlling the ball with his fancy paw skills, he loved zooming around the house to annoy his brother King and display his joyfulness of being a beloved furbaby, he loved stealing lambchop toys from big brother Vince (which earned him the nickname “Weasel”), he had the cutest little wiggle butt walk and I was so proud to see his confidence grow as he paraded around the dog park and interacted with other little dogs.

He was also my (Rae’s) shadow and my security guard. He followed me EVERYWHERE. Always next to me on the couch, bed, or by my side while working from home. If he couldn’t physically touch me, he would periodically stare at me to make sure I was within close radius to his protection. When we came home, he made sure we were well aware that he missed us, verbally and with jumps of joy, paw scratches and head nudges.

We enjoyed many walks (and strolls) in the nearby parks, around Oceanside harbor, trips to San Luis Obispo county, staycations in San Diego, but most of all, we enjoyed our time together at home, snuggling and watching you tube.

Unfortunately, Princey was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in August 2021. And as the months went on, we had several trips to the Vet and ER to address increased respiratory rates and to adjust or increase and add more medication.

Princey was a trooper though and eventually understood that his limiting walks and exercise meant he would be chauffeured around in his own stroller and red wagon, which was his special chariot, meant for Princey royalty.

One of the saddest and hardest things to do in my life is letting go of my beloved pets. I knew this dreaded day would eventually arrive, but prayed that when it did, that we would be there at Princey’s side while he transitioned over the Rainbow bridge. We wanted him to know just how much we loved him and appreciated his love and devotion to us. We had the strongest bond and we will always miss him. Princey was Mama’s Boy. We are so glad to have had him in our lives and the opportunity to love up on him and take care of him as best as we could, even though our time together was short.

PRINCEY, you were the most loyal, devoted, protective and SWEETEST GOOD BOY EVER. WE MISS YOU SO MUCH.

Thank you and everyone at FFF for giving Princey and King a second chance at having a great family life."

He was a special lil guy, with bright eyes, soft fur, the cutest baby yoda-like ears and he had a royal prance that resembled a show horse. We wish we had King and his brother Princey earlier in life as they both brought so much joy and smiles into our world. We will miss King’s spunky attitude. He was opinionated and selective about his inner circle and sometimes tough with strangers (he did not like being touched by anyone he didn’t know well), but he was my sweet boy and a big comforter to me when Princey passed away last year. He stayed near to me, gave lots of love and was my little protector. We miss having him around but know he’s reunited with Princey again.

Thank you to everyone at FFF, to Dr Russell and his amazing staff for the compassionate care and giving us an extra day to prepare our goodbye. Thank you Kelly for rescuing my royals and being adamant they remain together in a family. Our time with our boys were very short but King and Princey are forever part of our hearts."

Tribute: On May 22nd, Erika fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Kita.

She shared,

"I hadn't had a dog in over 15 years when a few months into the pandemic a friend suggested I might want to consider adopting a senior dog and mentioned your foundation.

So I started looking online for pitbulls that needed homes because several years ago when my son adopted one I was skeptical about having a dog of that breed but his dog was the sweetest girl and when she passed away from cancer at age six everyone was devastated. I saw Chiquita (Kita) and Buddy's photos on your website and learned they had been relinquished to a shelter in January of 2020 and finally rescued by FF in April of 2020. I wasn't sure I was ready to handle two dogs but I met their foster family at FF on May 8, 2020 and next thing I knew they were in the car with me and headed home.

Buddy has been stuck to me like glue since the beginning. He always needs to know where I am and be in the same room, whereas Kita would like her alone time and would often retreat to my room for naps alone. On some days I would often find that she had made herself comfortable on a couch even though I have five dog beds throughout the house but mostly the two of them would always sleep together. My nickname for Chiquita was Kita Rita and when she heard that name she usually knew it was time for breakfast or dinner.

She let me know from the beginning that I'd need to add something to the dry food if she was going to eat it, so it became a scrambled egg for breakfast and cooked chicken with broth added for dinner. We went on two walks everyday without fail. The first walk is at 6:30 in the morning and Kita would always be in the lead when we started and wanted to sniff everything along the way. By the end of the walk she would go as slow as possible and when we reached the driveway she would sometimes stubbornly refuse to go any further and I'd have to get behind her and nudge her into the house. Our 2nd walk always took place right after their dinner and both Kita and Buddy would run around in circles until we went. She only wanted to do her duty on our walks and almost never in the yard. She was a noisy sleeper, a snorer and runner in her sleep and I wished she could have told me what she dreamt about. She also always had one ear up in the air -like radar picking up a signal. I certainly miss my quirky girl, but Buddy has really been lost without her. He has always been anxious but his anxiety has increased tenfold. He paces, cries, howls and pees whenever I leave - even when someone else is home. It's like he is worried that I am going to leave him forever too. I hope when I bring him in to see Dr. Russell next week that he can give him something to ease his anxiety.

When Kita became ill everything happened so quickly. I'm thankful to the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of Sorrento Valley for their compassionate care on Sunday, May 22nd. Prior to that the only issue she had was with the foxtail that Dr. Russell removed from her paw just a few weeks ago. I hope Kita found comfort in my home during her last two years. Both she and Buddy have always been great dogs with all humans. My son, daughter-in-law, four year old grandson and their cat, Aggie, are living with me temporarily after relocating back from France in March, so it's a very full house. Buddy and the cat have developed an interest in each other but they each still retreat to their own space. My hope is that Buddy will be around with me for a while and doesn't hurt much longer from his broken heart. Thank you for trusting Kita and Buddy with my care."

Tribute: On June 5th, Erika fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Buddy.

She shared,

"On June 5th my best "Buddy"s spirit was gently guided by Dr. Didericksen to his star in the sky beside his sister, Kita.

The impact he had on my life over the past three years and one month was immense. I adopted both Buddy and Kita in May of 2020 and during the pandemic we had to create a routine of our own and Buddy led the way. After Kita passed in 2022 he became known in the neighborhood as the slowest walking dog and stubbornly picked the route he wanted to take twice a day, everyday without fail, and it was because of this regime we got to know many people I otherwise would have never met. At home he was my shadow and had a dog bed in every room of the house so he could keep an eye on me. Buddy first experienced seizures that would paralyze him for a few moments almost immediately after I adopted him. Medication kept these under control for the most part but over the last week of his life the seizures were happening to him daily. His mobility declined and he no longer had the strength to get back up when his hind legs collapsed. I knew even with the seizure, pain and anti-inflammation meds his quality of life was no longer what it needed to be as he was almost 14 years old.

I am grateful for the time I had with both Buddy and Kita and very thankful for the work that everyone at Frosted Faces does to find homes for such special dogs. The tremendous care provided for Buddy by Dr. Russell, and especially Dr. Dideriksen and Michelle on Buddy's final day. Their compassion made the agony of the decision to put Buddy to rest a bit easier. Shine bright Buddy! I'll be looking up for your star next to Kita in the sky everyday. 🐾🐾💔"

They shared,

"In April 2020, we adopted an 11 yr old beagle named Trixi. When we brought her home, we decided the name Juni B fit her, naming her after a children’s book our daughter used to read. We’ve had beagles on the ranch before and she fit in perfectly.

About 2 weeks after adopting Juni, we found a lump on her throat. She was subsequently diagnosed with aggressive and inoperable thyroid cancer. She was sweet as can be and never met a human she didn't instantly like. It was thought she only had about 60 days, but almost a year later she was doing fine and a part of the family.

We got some steps to make it easier to get up in bed. During the day when she got tired, she put herself to bed for a nap. We made a special diet for her, boiled chicken, green beans, and pumpkin purée. She loved it and seemed to make her happy. Whatever time she had left, we were going to make she was living happy, comfortable, and loved."

"Darcy was such a good girl. She was my awesome companion after my husband of 35 years passed away. She was always at the door to greet me when I got home. I miss that cold wet nose so much. And she would lay with me on the couch at night and she loved to be doted on. Anyone who would give her belly rubs was a friend of hers.

She was a traveling warrior. Between the car and the motorhome we logged probably 10,000 miles together. She loved camping and being outdoors at the beach or in the mountains. ...but she wasn't a big water girl...didn't like to swim or get her paws wet.

...and she loved her walks like no other dog I've met. I didn't walk her, she walked me. Oh how she would look forward to those walks.

She was also a food and treat hound. Loved her denta-styk and especially her favorite treat of an ice cream cone in the evening. Anytime there was a noise in the kitchen of food being prepared or opened there was that little sweet wet nose at my heels.

There was never a human that she did not love. She wasn't as good with other dogs except her cousin Maggie, but man did she love her human friends and family! And everybody loved Darcy right back.

Sometimes I would laugh and call her a sleuth because she would patiently lie somewhere out of sight and be so quiet waiting for her walk or some food or belly rub. ... and then suddenly she would appear out of nowhere.

One of her most favorite things to do was lay in the sun in the backyard and bag rays.

And she was a good protector. When someone would come to the door that she didn't recognize she would definitely let me know.

She loved playing with treat toys...working hard to get the treats.

Everyone who ever met Darcy said the same thing ...that she was such a good girl and everyone loved her. She is sorely missed and I truly believe she was one of a kind.

Oh my heart.... Play happy and be free Darcy ...you're over the rainbow bridge now and you don't need to worry about anymore pain."

She shared,

"I still haven’t been able to put away Louie’s things… he really had become pretty much the center of my attention, so accepting his absence will take some time. I do want to thank you and everyone at FFF for such wonderful support- it truly makes a difference.

If ever a dog deserved a second chance in life, it was Louie. His sad history as a stray exposed him to so many dangers and health risks, but being rescued by FFF changed that.

Louie came home with me August 10, 2020 and I hope he never looked back. In the beginning, Louie would climb the stairs with me at night to sleep in my room, like the other dogs. But he just couldn’t go back down, it was too hard for him. So, for about 6 months, every morning at 4:30 a.m., my son would carry him downstairs before he left for work. I’d get up too, and Louie and I would watch early morning tv until dawn, frequently sharing a bagel. (Louie loved cream cheese!)

It was during this time that we really bonded. Quiet one-on-one time helped to forge our connection more than anything. Louie suffered from anxiety, but over time, he gradually overcame much of that. When I look at photos and videos of him during that time, I’m reminded of how much he finally was able to enjoy life. Watching him run around the backyard, even though it brings fresh tears, I know he was happy.

When he began to decline both physically and cognitively, this past spring, we adjusted. Louie never became totally comfortable with his restrictions but together, we managed. Until we couldn’t.

My heart is incredibly heavy, and I ask myself why the big goofy dog who won my heart couldn’t have lasted longer, why I couldn’t have found yet more adaptive ways to care for him? Those are pointless questions, logically I know that. It was time to let Big Louie go, he was ready. As is always the case when we make that final decision for a beloved animal, we must weigh what is necessary against what is wished for. I wish Louie could’ve lived forever. But I’m grateful that for 15 months, he shared his life with me. Rest well, big guy. I love you, always. "

This sweet pup was an absolute joy. I am so blown away. She was so carsick when I first brought her home, but she soon learned to love to go on a drive, because it meant exploring a new park. She was an awesome camping companion. Every trip out the door was an adventure. I miss her so much."

They shared,

"I write this with such a heavy heart. Cadet passed away last evening. As you know when I first fostered him I had his growths biopsied and it came back cancerous. In the end the cancer took over but for the last 3 years he lived with so much carefree joy and love. I can genuinely say he was the most loving, sweetest pet I have ever had the pleasure of caring for and I’ve never had a pet provide me with so much unconditional love.

During the last week of his life he slowed down considerably, and when he stopped drinking water and couldn’t get up for his walks I feared the worst. I had the vet confirm with X-rays that the cancer had metastasized in his lungs and spleen and breathing had become too difficult. I gave him the best send off he deserved, with cupcakes and chili and chicken and rice. He was always so food motivated til the very end and perked up for all the yummy food.

I took him to the dog beach and balboa park one last time. He passed away at home, in his favorite spot next to the window, in our arms. He was surrounded by his family that loved him so dearly and with so much gratitude for the joy he brought this world.

The house feels so lonely without him and I can’t stop crying at the silence and the empty spots in the home. But I’m also so grateful that I had the honor of being his friend. I wanted him to know that I was committed to being his forever home and I wasn’t going to abandon him when others have and I hope he felt that. I only had three years with him but we bonded so intensely that it felt like I knew him a lifetime. Thank you so much for rescuing him and bringing him into my life. He was such a precious and gentle soul and he’s enriched my life so much by just knowing him."

"We all understood that Marmee wasn’t going to be around forever whether it was because she would be adopted or natural causes.

We really loved and enjoyed seeing the ladies come together for Marmee. It was especially cool to see residents we wouldn’t expect to step up for Marmee in ways we would have never imagined. She truly became BSL’s baby, and we’re not saying that just cause she had to wear diapers occasionally! The ladies would include her in their spa days and paint her nails, take her for daily walks, and give her all the peanut butter she could dream of. She was dubbed Princess Peanut Butter by a resident that would sneak her up to her room for special bedtime cuddles. Marmee taught all of us some really important lessons, not just about senior dog care but life in general. She brought a lot of joy to our residents who truly needed it.

Unfortunately when Marmee took a turn for the worst it took a toll on some of our residents but that didn’t stop them from keeping an eye on her all night if needed and being willing to help in giving her all the medications we tried. When she started to turn her nose up at food (which was not like Marmee) we all would try different things to get her to eat and through group effort would succeed. When she started drinking as much water as she could, there was always someone on hand to refill her bowl!

As much as our goal was to get Marmee adopted, I come to realize that she chose us. She was so loved by so many people I really think she thought to herself, this is how I want to go. It’s the only way we’ve made sense of our short time with her. We are so blessed to have had Marmee in our homes to bring our BSL family closer together. We all cried together as we said our goodbyes and now all share one more thing in common: the immense love that quickly grew for this sweetest girl."

Tribute: On May 13th, Anna fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Minnie.

Minnie had a bleeding splenic mass that we rushed to surgery at Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego. Dr. Drew said he had to tie off over 90 vessels and her surgery lasted hours requiring a few transfusions. There was no metastasis, and she was going to make it. She was walking, eating, bright. We declined nothing for care. She spent 3 days recovering in the ER, got clotting times, PCVs, full labs, and fast scans checked for a week thereafter-- $7,000.00 later, no amount of money, rechecks, or love could have bargained to keep Minnie here with Anna. We fought like hell for these two very special girls, but all was lost except for love, of course. So much love.

Anna shares,

"Minnie was an exceptional dog. She was a dog that everyone loved, but sadly no one could accommodate due to her reactivity. I had been following her for a long time until I decided that I wanted to give her a home. It took her awhile to truly come out of her shell, I could tell after a few days that she did realize that my apartment was home and that we were there for each other. I worked on her dog reactivity, and she wanted nothing more than to please! Even with those pesky chihuahuas on our walks. She got to the point where I was really excited that she and my mom's dog would be able to tolerate each other! (That took several months!) She responded to commands off leash, which I'm sure no one expected of her! Sadly, we'll never see if she would prove people wrong with her dog reactivity.

She knew when I was stressed, and would be sitting at attention right at 5:30pm for our evening 'strolls'. I loved to see how quietly I could say "tee tee" (potty command) and she would come bouncing from the other room to go outside. She definitely was snarky, as she would come up to you with a toy and play keep away. She did that until the very end. Her favorite thing was to rush to Sean's balcony door, wait for him to open it and then spend literally 6+ hours on her bed out there. His favorite memory was when he took care of her for a weekend, and all she did was sleep on the balcony, wake up every couple of hours to come in for scritches, then go back out to sleep. She was living her best life.

The end came quickly and suddenly. It was definitely a shock. But after her frostiversary, things seemed to go downhill. Some say that after 6 months dogs finally know they're home, so maybe she relaxed and let whatever internal issue take over and not fight it anymore, or who knows. It started with a limp and then on May 4th we found out a huge splenic mass had ruptured. The dear Doc said it was the worst and most complicated he had seen. And she got through! Then the next week was a roller coaster and finally, I saw it in her eyes. Even before Kelly emailed me to say that there may be nothing the Vet could do when we got there, I knew that Minnie was done fighting. She fought for a whole week and her body just wouldn't keep up with her mind. I let her know it was okay to go, Sean rushed over, and we took her to the vet and said our good byes.

Minnie was my first dog that was my complete and utter responsibility and I wouldn't have it any other way. She was a challenge, she was a joy. She put up with my snuggles when I really needed them, even though she wasn't much of a snuggler. I took her on super long walks even though I would be exhausted, because I knew she loved the outside and walks. I'm glad that COVID requirements started easing up so that I was able to take her on "Minnie Days" to the beach, the lake, and breweries. Everyone who saw her commented on how majestic of a dog she was. She was the goodest of girls.

Sean and I will miss you, Miss Minerva. I hope there are no fences to be found across the rainbow bridge, all the squirrels to chase, and all of the beds to not sleep on. I love you, boo boo."

Fans: RZ
Tribute: On April 19th, 10 year old Diamond was surrendered by her owner to Downey Shelter. They opened a humane investigation because she was in terrible condition, held her for three days, and then asked for a rescue exit within 24 hours. With the help of Linda Chute and Sarah Rayburn, we exited Diamond #A5362975 and brought her down to sunny San Diego.

Diamond went straight to San Diego Bay Animal Hospital for diagnostics and care. Our girl was riddled with cancer. Not only did she have a giant firm ruptured mass on her face, but she also had masses all over her abdomen, and on her spleen and liver. Diamond's heart was enormous too possibly from dilated cardiomyopathy or hemangiosarcoma. Our lifesaving vets who work miracles everyday on our Frosted Faces firmly believed that Diamond was suffering and any surgery would be truly barbaric to buy little time or comfort.

I hadn't even met her yet. Did I need to if she was suffering so terribly? We have only euthanized three Frosted Faces the first night of rescue, which is a shockingly low number considering what we do. I hope it's not selfishness or lack of perspective, which tugs at the back of my mind. If anything, I think it's a testament to our hope and even to our investment. We always touch each Frosted Face. We meet every senior, we meet every adopter in person.

I opted to have Diamond given pain injections and bring her home to Frosted Faces Foundation. She was so "normal" acting, I could feel the sting settling in of the decision looming. I could see why her owner couldn't put her to sleep and instead watched her cancer spread. Of course, lack of treatment could be for various reasons from neglect to insufficient finances. Diamond had numerous fleas, so we offered her the dignity of a bath and the vets had given her Capstar. Diamond had unusually long nails for such an active dog. One would've assumed that concrete at least would've worn them down, but they were fresh tallons. We cut those too and cleaned her dirty ears.

We ate dinner and had drinks on the patio by the fire late into the evening with Diamond on my lap. She fell asleep and snored loudly with her goopy little face on my leg.

The next morning she was up and at 'em howling for a potty break. She threw her head back and to the side, yipping out of just one side of her mouth. It was cute and sad all at the same time.

It was unusually warm and sunny at FFF today, so I took Diamond on a hike down at Pamo Valley. She went nearly 3 miles! When we saw the grazing cows she relentlessly pulled toward them! We stopped at every good smell with no regard for time or destination. She stuck her nose out the window on the ride up the valley, with me holding her leash for safety, in the warm breeze.

This is soul breaking. God. I cried the whole way home. We had to let her go. What I am not mentioning is that Diamond would not eat much for us. She pawed at her face in discomfort when at rest, and her innocent face and tummy were oozing blood and pus. It seems like an obvious decision, but if you would've seen her eat her last meal of Häagen-Dazs® ice cream while wagging her tail, or the way she rolled around on my office couch, or how she pulled toward those cows- what would be one more day? I bet that’s what her owners kept saying.

Walking into that vet's office this afternoon, I felt like some supernatural force was pulling me forward as my insides screamed to let me take Diamond home. This wasn't fair, but it was reasonable and gracious. I empathized with her parents from afar and forgave them for not having the courage to fulfill their promise to their girl. Watching Diamond trot trustingly into the vet office after this amazing time together was fucking hard. Andy and I held Diamond's body, robbed by cancer, as she fell away from this cruel world.

We owe thanks to Dr. VanMaele and Dr. Lipman for their kindness, sympathy, and guidance.

We love you, Di.

Tribute: On September 21st, Liz and Scott fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Finn after the diagnosis of lung cancer.

"At approximately 2:05pm on 21 September our Finn crossed the Rainbow Bridge in Tampa, FL.

Finn, Finnigan, Finnberto. Our senior old man. After some time we decided our hearts were ready to open our home to a new senior and by chance we were so lucky to have met you. Your sweet disposition and desire to lounge everywhere won over our hearts quickly. Though it came later in life, you proved to be a true Marine's dog with three homes in three different states with us (CA, PA, and FL). You were a road warrior going across the country and even braving the weather up to Maine for walks in the snow.

There is more I have in my heart that I fear saying outloud: the guilt of wishing I had more time, the guilt of your quick decline, the guilt of my work taking me away from you during your last days. But I will try to focus not on the guilt, but on the love we shared with you. I'm so happy I took time off from work to spend with you. We had many walks around the park where you got to see your little human brother play ball for one last time.

On our last day together, we had one last walk in the sun when you told me in your silent language it was time. As much as it hurt, I promised you I would be there through the end. From saying your praises as you crossed the rainbow bridge, to putting your sweet body on the cart for cremation and giving you my last touches with prayer.

We miss you so much, and though we know it was your time, our hearts cannot feel less heavy as we get used to not having your sweet soul in our lives. Until we meet again my sweet, sweet pup. You were loved beyond measure.

'The one thing I could not protect you from was time.'"

Tribute: On March 10th, Lynne fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face London.

She shared,

"It is with a heavy heart that I am sharing sweet London went over the rainbow bridge on Wednesday afternoon. She has left a huge empty space in our home and it is difficult to move forward at this time. She was such a sweet and gentle girl, it just does not seem fair that she didn’t have longer with us. Her 3 year Frostiversary is in April and her 3 year Gotcha Day in June.

I had known for many months that we were on a week to week timeline and over the past month it was a day to day. Her previous traumas and her Cushing’s Disease eventually took its toll on her sweet body and she lost the sparkle in her eyes and was tired. On Wednesday she let me know it was her time. She didn’t want to go on her short walk down the road, would not even take a lick of food and stayed in her bed with a very sad sorrowful look. She had not had an appetite for several months even with Entyce and Cerenia and was continually losing weight.

She lay with her head on my lap for several hours while I told her how much she was loved and when the vet arrived she had a peaceful passing on her favorite bed with the sun on her face and her FF sister Cookie by her side.

She brought such love and joy to us, life seems very empty.

Many many thanks to Kelly, Dr. Russell, the vet techs, her fan and all at FF who supported her and myself over the past three years. Thank you all for saving her and showing such love and kindness. Also thank you to Christa Dwyer for loving her prior to London coming home."
