Button

Age upon Rescue: 11
Date of Rescue: February 20, 2023
Date of Passing: January 5, 2024
Family: Kera Phelps & Cory Weberg
Fans: Elaine Carlton, Donor in memory of Bogey

Tribute: On January 5th, Kera and Cory fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Button.

They shared,

"May 5, 2023, I brought home the sweetest, smallest, bundle of joy named Button. I knew as soon as I saw her, she had to come home with me. She was diagnosed with Bladder cancer so we weren't expecting to have her as long as we did, but as time went on I thought I had myself a miracle baby.

She immediately made herself at home and became one of my dominant and most demanding dogs. Her constant need for attention and love filled my heart.

Button allowed me to care for her while she was sick, even gaining 7 pounds during the 8 full months I had her. She was a hospice FF, but wanted to out live her condition. She was a very sick little girl, but had a determination to please and live!

Button loved car rides and going to see gradma. Her favorite activity was simply laying in the sun and jumping up onto the recliner where her dad sat. Watching her jump, jump, jump and make it up on chairs or the bed is one memory i will take with me and smile. She was a chow hound and wanted food every 2 hours no matter where we were and no matter what time! Those 2am, 4am and even 530 am feedings still wake me up even though she is not here anymore. 💔 The endless barking has left the house silent and I miss it so much.

Even though we were on borrowed time, everyday was a blessing. She enriched my life and was so loved and gave back so much love in return.

Button was and still is the best little girl. Her loss on January 5th broke our home, but we know her little body just couldn't take anymore, even though her spirit and determination still wanted to be with us. We love you Button. Forever with us.

P.S. Thank you to FFF and their support team and Vet staff for all the care and love."

Tribute: On November 29th, Debbie and Scott fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Mango.

They shared,

"It is with great sadness that Scott Baird and I had to make the difficult decision to let Mango (fna Crystal) cross the 🐱 🌈

We only had her a few short months and she brought us so much joy and love. Mango had oral cancer that impacted her breathing and started to bleed pretty badly this morning, impacting her ability to eat.

We hope we gave her as much love and happiness as she gave us. She was truly loved and I think we gave her a happy and spoiled last few months of her kittie life. We love you Mango and miss you already. Thank you for trusting us, loving us, and bring us joy and happiness. 🧡🐯"

Tuna

Acquired from: Baldwin Park Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 9
Date of Rescue: February 24, 2023
Date of Passing: September 8, 2023
Family: Tay Jackson & PJ Tobias
Fans: Teresa & Randy Petro, Bonnie Sposato, Jen Glatz

Tribute: On September 8th, Tay and PJ fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Tuna.

They shared,

“Tuna was a sweet boy who loved taking naps and eating snacks (especially the occasional French fry). Tuna spent most of his day on his favorite spot on the rug, getting love and pets from our family. He didn’t like to be left out and would come with us while we were cooking in the kitchen in hopes to get a little treat. He wasn’t very physical in his affection but would sometimes lay his head in our chests and I think that was his way of saying thank you for rescuing him. He was very loved in our home and he is missed very much."

Grouper

Acquired from: Baldwin Park Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 17
Date of Rescue: February 24, 2023
Date of Passing: March 1, 2023
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Teresa & Randy Petro, Dog Devoted Vintage

Tribute: On March 1st, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Buttercream.

We lovingly called Buttercream "Grouper" at FFF, as a sidekick to her rescue buddy Tuna.

Grouper was surrendered to Baldwin Park Shelter by her family. Her dental disease was so severe, the shelter performed dental surgery on her before putting her on the adoption floor.

As soon as we exited her and made her a Frosted Face we performed bloodwork and x-rays. Her creatinine was 9.9, her BUN was greater than 130, and her phosphorous was over 16.1. Not only did her family leave her behind when she needed them most, it was apparent based on her condition, that she had been neglected for a very long time. Grouper suffered at the hands of the only people who were in a position to help her.

As much as surrenders are disappointing, more and more I have come to appreciate that dogs like Grouper have the potential to live lives with far more devoted parents if you leave room for surrender. I wish more than ever Grouper would have been surrendered years ago where she had time to be cherished and treated for her ailments.

We hooked Grouper up to fluids and injections for a few days to love on her and wait for a urine culture. Grouper could lay nose to nose with you, sharing her big Costco bed, and smile into your soul. Who knew all that she needed for so long was so simple? Each of us could have laid with her forever. We were not going to selfishly prolong her life, and Wednesday was the day we had the privilege to give her peace.

I can't imagine being resented or ignored or forced to suffer for a lifetime. For this reason, we are developing rehoming resources for seniors animals who are privately owned or in the care of other rescues under the FFF umbrella. Stand by for this announcement.

We loved you, Grouper. We are sorry we didn't know you sooner so we could have loved you longer.

Kaine

Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: March 1, 2023
Date of Passing: March 18, 2023
Family: Frosted Face Foundation
Fans: Alex W., Donor in memory of Pukka, Vera Marshall

Tribute: With an unfair twist of fate, I am profoundly sorry to share with you that we fulfilled our promise to sweet Kaine yesterday.

Kaine had been abandoned in a disgusting, dark RV on a vast, uninhabited property where he was discovered. Aaron Doll saved his life by pursuing the veterinary care Kaine needed, and ultimately, a rescue to help.

Besides for Kaine's malignant masses on his belly, his bloodwork read that he had non regenerative anemia with a PCV of 11. This is very very low. He was doing surprisingly well, so the vet guessed that this had likely been slowly dropping for awhile. We tested for tickborne diseases, did an ultrasound to look for internal bleeding, and were waiting on a path review looking trends for IMHA- which eventually came back negative. We were missing something, so we treated him and by Friday, his PCV was 18 and holding, where the rest of his labs also looked unremarkable. His repeated x-rays on Friday were not too crazy, so we discussed transfusing and then going after those bloody masses for quality of life.

Saturday morning Kaine was quiet, and by the afternoon he suddenly was in respiratory distress. A quick pulseox at FFF read 72, and Dr. Dideriksen directed us to head to the ER. Volunteer, Mary Arkwright sped like a Batmobile into Escondio- Animal Urgent Care where I met her in the parking lot. Kaine was oxygenating even more poorly, grunting hard, and began to tremor or seize. It was all too much, and Dr. Kim let us know his prognosis was grave after reviewing the records, and we needed to let him go before he suffered anymore. I hummed "You are my Sunshine" and told him all of you loved him very much as he left his body that had betrayed him.

We were so lucky to love Kaine. We were so lucky to be able to make him comfortable and clean for awhile, and to be able to offer him a dignified death with as little suffering as possible granted the emergency. I cannot believe the incredible luck that Kaine was afforded by being discovered, and being discovered by the "right" kind of person who truly advocated for him. I know Aaron is deeply disappointed, and there will forever be "what ifs."

I know I just shared a bunch of photos of Kaine, but I want to share this last one I took of him on Friday night to share with the staff. "Look! Kaine is asleep on the couch!" He was clean, warm, loved, and in a safe place.

We wanted more for Kaine. I know you all did too. I was telling Aaron tonight on the phone, it's weird how Kaine was just a photo on the internet that I couldn't stop thinking about, and then becoming that person crying over him, being with him in this very final moment of his one life. It's the reason you act on love... be or do what you can't stop thinking about. It's the most rewarding experience and I would do it all over again for him, and you know we will for the next one.

Thank you to all of the FFF volunteers, Kennel Managers, and Veterinary Staff who invested so much love into him. ❤ Thank you for showing up for him.

Tribute: On April 7th, Keith and Melissa fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Liza.

They shared,

"I can’t even believe I have to write this so soon. Our sweet sweet Liza…..💔 We are so heartbroken. 20 days wasn’t enough. It just wasn’t. I had so much I wanted to show and experience with you, but your body had been through so much already and your eyes told me you were tired.

After Liza’s massive tumor removal she got an infection but antibiotics seemed to do the trick - for at least a few days. Then something just seemed off. Her energy was down, she didn’t want to go for walks and I got worried. Then she started to bleed from her mouth. Took her to Midland animal clinic where we discovered her hematocrit was low.. but why? her mouth bleeding from very bad teeth couldn’t have caused this drastic decrease in her hematocrit. I still felt uncomfortable with her demeanor- so off to VSH emergency we went.

Within the same day her blood count had dropped more. They did test upon test, numerous lab draws for all different types of causes to her blood loss, gave her fluids and a blood transfusion. She stayed at VSH over night and received amazing care. Luckily our daughter works at VSH when she is home from college and so she has lots of friends there… so many so- they continued to send us pictures and updates overnight.

We still couldn’t find a rationale on why she was losing blood without going down a rabbit hole to only determine she most likey has a form of mammary cancer that is destroying her cells 🥺

We brought our girl home and had one more amazing day with her. I didn’t leave her side. I slept on the floor with her, gave her ALL the whip cream she would eat and 2 yummy McDonalds egg and sausage McMuffins for breakfast the next day.

Paws into grace came to help us gently send our girl over the rainbow bridge (thank u Dr Toni!)

I miss our girl so so much! Liza was perfect and we were so very lucky to be her final family. You know people always ask- how can you keep going through this heartbreak over and over?

I honestly think these pups should be given all the credit not us. They are resilient. They are strong. They come from neglectful and abandoned situations yet still give us humans a second chance. They love us unconditionally despite where they came from. So this heartbreak I have in this moment hurts, but the memories and love she gave us will last forever.

Mama loves you Liza. You are the bestest girl. 🌈❤️‍🩹"

Acquired from: Harbor Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 11
Date of Rescue: March 29, 2023
Date of Passing: April 14, 2023
Family: Ron & Kerry Ferreirae
Fans: The Albrecht Family

Tribute: On April 14th, Ron and Kerry fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Lester.

We had just rescued Lester knowing he had least has visible cancerous masses on his prepuce and abdomen. His labs showed he had non-regenerative anemia with a hematocrit of 26 (which is low-ish) among other concerning values, and we began treatment of his ailments to make him more stable for surgery. A PCV recheck just one week later was 18. This is not good. An ultrasound did not reveal any noticeable bleeds, but we were losing Lester quickly.

We are so fortunate that Kerry stepped up to take Lester to foster last weekend and love him for his last days. She shared with us upon his passing,

"Our time with Lester was entirely too short. He came home on Sunday and immediately set about claiming us as his own. He leaned in for all the loving, picked out his favorite doggy bed, played with toys, and ate voraciously. Our second night together, we took all the dogs for a walk together (Lester, FF Lars, and non-FF Sugar). After about a block, Lester was clearly tired, so I told my husband I'd head home with him. I turned to take Lester home and he slammed on the brakes, letting us know there was no way he was leaving his pack. Lester insisted on taking that whole walk with his new pack.

Just as quickly as he claimed us, he started fading. I'm sitting here on my couch, surrounded by the other dogs. They are strangely quiet, needy and concerned. Especially Lars, the big, soft, blind shepherd we fling failed over a year ago. He is needing tons of reassurance and love today, missing sweet Lester. "
