Lorna's S4S Liaison shared,
"Lorna had recently lost her beloved non FF dogs Hunter and Susie within months of each other and needed some dogs to help mend her broken heart. She had become a fan of the Frosted Faces Mission and was interested in adopting a pair from us. What a win! Initially, she was interested in some big dogs, but was worried how they would do with her little old man at home. Then, she met medium sized boys Penn and Teller, who were residents of the littles yard, and the rest was history. Penn-sweet little guy. He might’ve had his grumpy moments but for the most part was a little teddy bear.
Our hearts ache as we say goodbye to good boy Penn, just shy of his one year adoptiverary. Penn brought us joy with every wag of his tail, comfort with every nuzzle, and unconditional love in ways words can’t describe. Though his time with his mom was short, his personality filled the home with so much love and it has been greatly missed. His spirit will live on in his co-pilot Teller. Rest in peace, sweet soul. You’ll always be our good boy. Enjoy meeting your heavenly doggie brothers and sisters!"
Thank you Brianna Millard for being such a wonderful Liaison for this family.

Tribute: On October 31st, Cori fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Enzo.
She shared,
"Hello FF Family,
This is Cori, Hopper (fka Kaiser) and Enzo (fka Francois) mom.
I was hoping that I wouldn’t have to post one of these for a long time but unfortunately, that’s not the case. Little Enzo passed away in my arms on Halloween night. Having only been with me less than 4 weeks, it was totally unexpected and very sudden.
Due to Enzo’s collapsed trachea, it was diffcult for him to do a lot, but he was always calm (except when trying to give him his meds) and after he took a couple days to settle in, started following me around the house or looking for me after naps. He had the cutest little trot with those stumpy legs when he was in the yard and needed to “go”. He loved laying in the sun, getting belly rubs, and being hand fed like a little prince.
I’m saddened that our time was cut so short. There was so much I had planned for all of us for the holidays and although we did get to a pumpkin patch and out a few other times, it wasn’t enough. I can only hope he knew he was loved. Until we meet again….."

Tribute: Roadie showed up on our doorstep with a Good Samaritan who had lured him from traffic. It was clear Roadie was unwell because he was slow moving, seemingly blind, and open mouth breathing.
We get brought a lot of strays and have Animal Control pick them up so that their owners can claim them from a place where most would suspect their missing pet would be brought. We learned that Animal Control picks up cats who are too young to be without their mothers or who are sick, but something about Roadie led us to begin diagnostics and treatment, hanging onto him until we had results. Dr. Dideriksen named him "Roadie" and certainly poured her heart into her treatment plan for this impromptu patient.
Unfortunately, testing showed he was FELV and FIV postive, which would be certain death at the shelter. We pride ourselves in finding solutions for tough to place pets, so we made him a cat condo in the FFF office and let him run all around the office when Frosted Face Shelly was not present.
Roadie was very social! He loved to be held and his vision even seemed to improve! He sat nicely for his daily fluids, eye drops, oral meds, and sat on my lap while I worked at my computer. It was a welcome change to have a cat around and we were really proud to be able to give him this chance at life!
Shockingly, Roadie was chosen by a foster with no cats! We are so appreciative of her willingness to care for him, but unfortunately, Roadie had some potty accidents outside of his litterbox which was a deal breaker. Just this one night in a home was nice to know he was sleeping with a human in bed and loved and we are still grateful. Honestly, I am just so surprised and grateful we even had a "bite" from a foster for a cat with these diseases and it gives me hope!
We always want to grant our pets the gift of euthanasia so they don't have to endure the dying process. The vets warned us Roadie was very sick given his conditions, but he didn't act it so we kept hanging out with him. On Sunday morning, we discovered Roadie had passed away in his cat condo. I am glad he wasn't outside on the streets, that we kept him comfortable on medication, and I am glad he had a name and was loved here at FFF by all the staff.

Tribute: On October 11th, Jamie and David fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Dougal after trying to treat a combination of heart disease, kidney disease, and a gall bladder mucocele.
They shared,
Our sweet Dougal! Words cannot describe the impact he had on us in such a short amount of time. We brought him home on September 30th knowing he was hospice and needed extra love. He was our first hospice dog and you can never know what to expect since each dog and situation are different. With that, we braced for the worst and gave him all of the best we could.
He loved cruising around town in the stroller propped up so he could lay his head on the side with the wind in his face. He loved standing in the sun, to warm up. He was so thin and frail that I can imagine the heat felt good to him. He loved food and was willing to taste any snacks at anytime. Dougal was the best at giving cuddles. I would pick him up anytime I had a break and he would never move. So much so, that at bedtime he preferred to sleep on my chest while I sat propped up, that if I tried to roll him off me so he could sleep next to me he would wake up immediately. As much as I needed sleep, he needed me more at that moment. I thought that he must not have felt love for most or all of his life until FF and now he is soaking it all up. It felt as if he was so comfortable with us and knew we were there to show him love that he would just melt into our arms. Even though he had a rough past, he came into our home completely trusting us as if he knew we were there to give him the best!
On the 2nd visit to see Dr. Russell my husband completed the paperwork to officially adopt Dougal. We were so worried about him but had no idea to the extent of his irreparable health issues. I reached out to my husband while he was with Dougal at FF seeing Dr. Russell and asked if he was ready to adopt Dougal. He responded with, 'I already completed the paperwork.' I could not have been more happy in that moment. The following day, we were faced with the difficult but compassionate decision to ease his pain unexpectedly. We did everything in our power to show Dougal and tell him how much we loved him. As painful as this experience has been, we would not change a thing. We were blessed to have Dougal in our lives for those 11 days. We are so happy to be able to bring him home and keep him close to our hearts along side of our other animals. He was part of the family the minute he came home with us. For anyone who does not believe in love at first sight, I whole heartedly beg to differ!"

Tribute: On October 6th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Chewy as he struggled with noncardiogenic pulmonary edema resulting from a terribly end stage collapsing trachea.
Kennel Manager, Alicia Anthony, spent the most time with him and has written this beautiful tribute.
"I saw Gerkin's pic (aka Chewy) in a Facebook post and was immediately drawn to him. Kelly gets requests to rescue dogs 24/7. I didn't want to be adding another "please rescue this dog" message to her inbox, but I did. It looked like another rescue was exiting him, so we sat back. We soon found out he didn't have anyone coming for him, and that's when we set the wheels in motion to get him to Frosted Faces.
Lucky for me, he arrived on a day I was working. I have no doubt everyone there heard me squeal when his transporter carried him into the lobby. I even yelled "Kelly!! Come look at him!" I knew I was in trouble, and that he would soon be at my house. What I didn't know was that he was pretty sick. He arrived with a very bad cough and just looked "off." Rachel (one of our vet techs) had decided to come in to volunteer on the Saturday he arrived, and she immediately started his intake exam and was talking to our vet staff about him. He had a very bad collapsing trachea, along with an upper respiratory infection. We hospitalized him on site and started IV fluids and medications.
He remained hospitalized on site for the week and I took him home Friday night to watch over him for the weekend, administer his fluids and meds, and give him a quiet place to rest. His poor cough was horrible, and made it so hard for him to get any rest. Snuggles definitely helped! First thing Monday morning we were back at Frosted Faces to see the vet, and he was hospitalized again. I hated leaving him, but I knew he needed the extra medical care.
He didn't spend all of his time at Frosted Faces hospitalized in a kennel. He made me laugh when he was walking around in the office and saw himself in the mirror. He barked at his reflection and tried to bite himself! He couldn't understand why that chihuahua wasn't scared and wouldn't leave!
Any break I had while working at Frosted Faces was spent with Gerkin, and he came home with me any chance he could. I'm not usually at Frosted Faces on Thursdays, so when Kelly let me know he wasn't looking well that night I asked if I could come get him. When we got home I wrapped him up in a blanket, placed him in my lap, and we both fell asleep.
The next day I was working at Frosted Faces. He was the first patient seen by the vet staff and was hospitalized again. We took new x rays and it showed some fluid in his lungs. His cough wasn't improving, he had stopped eating a few days prior, and his prognosis was grim. Any spare time I had that day was spent with him. Even if it was just petting him in his kennel while he was getting fluids.
After my shift ended I brought him outside and I cradled him while the sun started to set. Earlier in the day we had decided that letting him go was the most humane thing to do. I held him, hugged him, talked to him, covered him in kisses. Kelly, Andy, Maira, Diana, Michelle and Dr. Russell all came out to say goodbye to him, while I sobbed and covered him in tears. He left this world knowing nothing but love, and I know he's over that rainbow bridge with no cough, barking up a storm at the other dogs.
I need to give Rachel a huge thank you for everything she did for Gerkin. When I wasn't at Frosted Faces she was sending me updates on how he was doing. When I had him at home she was checking in with me to make sure he was ok. Unfortunately she wasn't working on Friday and didn't get the chance to say goodbye to him, but he definitely got extra hugs and kisses for her.
Two weeks with him was not enough, and I wish he'd come to us sooner. Thank you, Kelly, for bringing this little potato to me, and thank you to everyone who tried so hard to fix him. I love you my sweet Gerkin ❤"

Tribute: On April 13th, Emily fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Dawn. We did dental surgery on her, removed her mammary masses, and even spayed her. Dawn came in for blood pressure rechecks and lived every last good day on meds until the vet discovered pleural effusion.
She shared,
"I fulfilled my promise to Dawn on Wednesday and let her rest. It was a beautiful sunny day on the porch of FFF. My sunshine girl got to enjoy chicken nuggets, ice cream, robin's eggs (malted milk balls), Reese's PB cups, and at last a whole slice of strawberry shortcake. There was never a human or dog, or food, big or small, she did not like.
Thank you to the kindness and care of the vet staff and support of all staff/volunteers/visitors of FFF. I'm so glad I got to spoil her and share life with her for only 5 months. Felt like so much longer yet much too short. She fell asleep for the last time in my arms. Likely she had hemangiosarcoma, she was restless and struggling to breathe and losing color in her last 24 hours even after Dr. Russell removed some pleural fluid. My house feels so empty without her big heart ❤"

They shared,
"Coco Bean, as we called her, was adopted by me and my husband in October 2023. We lost our sweet Gigi that same month and when I visited Frosted Faces, Coco reminded me so much of our girl, Gigi, I had to have her. I ended up adopting two dogs that day. Poppi, a black & white poodle mix was so friendly and he seemed to stick by Coco’s side so I brought them both home. They became my shadows and were such goods friends. 🐕 🐩
Even though we didn’t have that much time with our Coco Bean, we came to love her very much. It was our honor to care for her and love her. I know her last seven months with us were some of my best months and her’s too. She was loved and I know she knew that. I’m so grateful for her love and we miss her everyday. I am also very grateful for the love and care she received from Frosted Faces Dr Russell and all the nurses and attendants who cared for her. Thank you all! 🥰"

Tribute: On Thanksgiving Day, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Monkey.
Monkey was surrendered to South LA Shelter by his family. He was in pretty awful shape with matted fur, flea, irritated red patchy skin, with ear and eye infections. Of course he had terrible dental disease and was not altered. We had exited many many dogs from South that day, and Monkey was in the worst condition of all of them.
When you meet a dog like Monkey, you promise to heal his body and heart, to offer him so much goodness it clouds the bad. Foster mom, Sue King, made this happen by getting him groomed, letting him sleep inside on clean warm bedding, and holding him throughout the day. We suspect that Monkey was surrendered because he seemed to be experiencing some canine cognitive dysfunction and was also deaf, so he would bark very loudly when he was confused. Once he knew his routine, his distress lessened so much!
Monkey was curious and sweet. He deserved more time in a place to call "home." Unfortunately, his kidney values skyrocketed. Without the presence of infection and after a week of hospitalization, Monkey was tired. We owe thanks to RVT Rachel and Dr. D for their extra care for Monkey while he was sick too leaving no stone unturned.
We tried, Monkey, and we love you.

Tribute: On October 23rd, Lauren fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Benji after suffering from a sudden onset of many many seizures that could not be controlled.
She shared,
"I feel like I should be somewhat used to this but this is an especially hard one to write. I had Benji for only 10 days - not even a full Fling. Benji was a gentle giant, as many big dogs are. She was mostly quiet, but had a loud booming bark if she wanted to get my attention quickly! She was mellow, sleeping through the night from the very beginning. She liked to nap at my feet while I worked, occasionally nudging me for attention. Her giant tongue would often be flopping out the side of her mouth 😂
She loved having her head and ears scratched and would put her giant paw on me to make sure I remembered she was there and didn’t stop. If you talked to her, she would do these adorable little head tilts like she was truly listening to what you were saying (see video). She liked naps in the sun and dinner time. It took her a minute or two to get up, but once she was up, she loved a slooooow walk around the block.
She decidedly disliked baths, and let me tell you trying to give a dog that weighs as much as you a bath is quite the challenge! She didn’t seem to understand toys, and even passed up a bone to chew on.
With my previous fosters that have passed, I have always had time and the understanding of their gradual decline to come to terms with. I was able to spoil them with hamburgers or pizza or tacos, take them for more strolls in the sun, extra pets or snuggles. I regret that I didn’t do those “extra” things with Benji. I thought my purpose was just learning more about her to pass on to FFF, so they would know more about what her ideal home would look like. I split my time between her, my pets, my foster cats, work, having relatives in town, etc. instead of dedicating more extra special time to her. It was an unfortunate reminder that every day is meant to spoil every pet, every foster. She was a dog that had been let down so many times and I wish I would have done more to celebrate her new life at FFF. It’s hard not to feel as if she was let down again by me.
To Benji - I’m so sorry I couldn’t take care of you and give you more. I hope you are at peace ❤️"

He was a boy who didn’t want much, but made it pretty clear what he did want. He wanted snacks, and to nap with his people, that’s it, so we made sure that’s always what he got. He went everywhere with me; game nights, restaurants, friends houses, he even got to go to work with his dad a few times, and everyone misses him so much. He was always the most popular guy in the room, although he couldn’t have cared less about that. Even though our time was short, I’m forever grateful for it."

Tribute: esterday we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Gregg.
Gregg was abandoned in a park with 2 other dogs named Gary and Garvey, and a Good Samaritan brought them in. Gary was euthanized at the shelter because he was irremediably suffering, but we rescued Garvey and Gary. Shelter Video: https://www.facebook.com/reel/643225641261949
Garvey was adopted by a wonderful family, and we chose to keep Gregg on-site at FFF as a permanent resident because he needed additional help and sometimes would bite. Life can be really easy at FFF for our dogs who live in the lobby. It's a home-like environment, all one level, and dogs can easily access the play yard through a sliding glass door.
Most people would never keep a dog like Gregg in their lobby, but it was the only place where we could give him a good quality of life. Everyone just knew, "Don't touch Gregg!" Although the shelter named him, Gregg certainly knew when you were talking to him. He knew when to get up to potty, when to come inside, he even knew how to catch treats!
Gregg got to go on hikes to be strolled by volunteers, ate boiled chicken when wet food just wasn't hitting the spot, and was on gobs of pain meds and injections to manage his arthritis including Carprofen, Gabapentin, Amantadine, Amitriptyline, Ketamine injections, and fish oil. Volunteers got brave and learned Gregg's quirks so that he could get baths, brushings, and nail trims. He surprisingly loved being pampered, just don't touch his face! 🙂
Grazel... that is what makes me most sad. Gregg was known for his lobby romance with Hazel, another FFF resident who is a blind and deaf Petit Basset Griffon Vendéen. Where Gregg gave most of the other "Lobbyists" a good warning growl or snap if they got too close, he was always gentle with Hazel. They found each other in the both the lobby and the play yard, and laid near to each other and on top of each other! Volunteer Jenn DeWeese knitted them a few matching bandanas. Finding the couple "Grazel" together was always a welcome treat and photo op.
Gregg went on one Frosted Fling hosted by Theresa Brown and Mark Vardakas. They were newbie Flingers and did SUCH a good job with him and his drama. They let us know, "He definitely took a part of us with him." We are so grateful that they took a chance on Gregg and gave him some special time in a home.
Just a couple short weeks ago, Gregg was no longer able to walk. We did diagnostics, adjusted medication, and gave the meds time to work. It's easy to jump to, "Oh, it's time," but we always give diagnostics, treatment, and time a fair opportunity. Now around here, paralyzed dogs are our jam, but Gregg... Gwegg... he made nothing easy. We could not even get a sling under him and suiting him in a hip harness was a dance all itself. He was telling us that he was painful and frustrated, and it was time to listen because we could not give him dignity.
All of the staff and volunteers who were on-site for their shifts stopped what they were doing and encircled Gregg to send him to heaven. It was really really beautiful. With a little sedation on board, we all got to kiss Gregg's face finally and whisper closely into his ear that we loved him.
Now there was one person who could always touch Gregg and that was Kennel Manager Christian, better known to Gregg as his best friend. Christian is so gentle and thoughtful with all of the Frosted Faces, but he and Gregg had a special bond. He spent extra time sitting with him in the yard petting him in the sunshine when others couldn't and Gregg would nuzzle his face into Christian's hands for pets, nudging him for more. Christian received hugs from all the staff, and gets the honor of bringing Gregg's ashes home.
Thank you for helping us help dogs like Gregg. ❤

Tribute: On October 26th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Florence.
Florence was turned in as a stray at San Diego Humane Society. On October 20th, all of the FFF Kennel Managers went there to help exit some dogs and came across sweet Flo. She was still on a stray hold, but obviously in poor condition, so we exited her as a foster for the Humane Society.
It was all too much too late. Flo had a GINORMOUS bladder stone that had likely been unidentified by her former family and untreated. Bloodwork showed she was in stage 3 kidney failure with a very bad UTI. This UTI could have been caused by the bladder stone, and also causing the high kidney values. Of course, she had grade 4/4 dental disease too.
You know what we did, we hospitalized her and blasted her with antibiotics. If we could just get her bloodwork looking a better, we could get that stone out and just see if she could rally and thrive.
By Day 6, it was clear that Florence needed to be humanely euthanized because she was suffering. Teeny Tiny Florence was surrounded by every single kennel and vet staff silently in my office as she crossed over the bridge. The techs invested so much time into her keeping her clean, spoon feeding her a/d and baby food, among administering her injections, and checking her vitals all week. Florence had a lot of tears falling for her. ❤
We owe a special thank you to Mari and John who come every Sunday morning to treat a special dog to a day at the beach despite the 2 hour round-trip drive. They took Flo during her stay as a Frosted Face, and I am certain she had one good day in their gentle arms.
