Debbie
Acquired from: Final Wish
Age upon Rescue: 5

Date of Passing: March 31st, 2021
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation

Tribute: A long time supporter, Leslie, reached out to us because an elderly neighbor of hers, Lola, passed away who had no family. She left behind two dogs, Dixie and Debbie, who needed a plan.
Dan, another neighbor who had mowed Lola's lawn and helped take her to appointments scooped up Dixie and Debbie, paid for their vaccines, and brought them to The Animal Keeper until they could come up with a plan for them.
We agreed to take responsibility of the girls through our Final Wish Program. Leslie brought Debbie and Dixie to us Monday, March 29th. They were curious, but reluctant to follow me to their new temporary home. We started Dixie back on her dry eye drops and had an eye on Debbie because she was breathing pretty hard.
As the evening went on, Debbie was still breathing awfully hard and although Leslie and Dan didn't know her all too well, it definitely didn't seem like the norm. We got her treatment of steroids and calming meds, and she got better. She was fine the rest of the night and all of the next day toodling around in the yard. We learned that she had a very large splenic mass and cancer had infiltrated her liver, but there was no free fluid in her very large abdomen. Her heart and lungs seemed okay, but likely stressed due to her obesity. She seemed comfortable finally, so the goal was to tell the girls' story, like I am doing now, and quickly find them a new family.
Debbie did not give us much time. Although we were up late working the following night, did final checks around midnight specifically looking in on Debbie and Dixie, we discovered Debbie passed away the next morning.
She had just been through so much from losing her mom and her home, to being shuffled between the boarding facility and FFF, while also living with so much cancer in her body. We only knew her for two days, but she was ours and we feel accountable for her health and ending as our own.
Dixie is doing well and is patiently waiting for family.

Tribute: On September 12th, Molly fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Daryl.
She shared,
"Daryl brought so much joy to me & all he encountered. Daryl loved walking around Lindo Lake with his posse. The morning walkers all knew our little guy. He was liked by dogs, big or small.
I was blessed with Frosted Face Daryl on July 18th 2021. His Fling Mom described him as Dreamboat Daryl. He certainly fit that description.
Here is Daryl on his way to become the newest member of our family.
From our first day together Daryl always brought me joy. I couldn’t help but smile each morning as I saw him sleeping in his bed.
For the first few months, Daryl was so quiet. One night dinner was delayed. I heard this howl & realized it was Daryl. He had found his voice! He never barked but he’d howl his opinions, often during walks if the humans were gabbing instead of moving along.
At home we’d play fake out. He’d run to his bed then back to my arms with this big grin. He especially enjoyed meal prep. He would dance around the kitchen waiting for dinner. He had the biggest grin when I shared a tidbit with him.
On chilly days I’d put a sweater or jacket on him. He had quite the wardrobe. It was fun to celebrate his cuteness with his outfits.
At bedtime, Daryl asked to be tucked in. I would cup his sweet face & he would nuzzle my palms. I kissed his head & say “Sweet Dreams, Daryl”. I hope he did."

Tribute: We rescued Zest from Bonita Shelter a few months ago after he was brought in as a stray. We neutered him and did dental surgery, then sent him off to a foster home on the beach!
Zest was adopted and recently returned to us for resource guarding his new human that he thought was all his! Everything happens for a reason, because times were about to get even tougher and he needed someone who was going to be with him through thick and thin.
It was scary for all of us, and mostly Zest, as Monday morning he woke up unable to use any of his legs. We have never done a ventral slot procedure on a Frosted Face, and after doing an MRI it looked like the spinal cord was inflamed between C5 and C6 and there was no disc space.
Dr. Hampel took Zest to surgery fully prepared to fix him right up. What she was found was that Zest had a high velocity disc, or rather, Hansen Type III disc disease. His disc had shot up into his spinal cord, which absorbed the disc. Zest’s case caused a hole in the spinal cord which was visible during surgery, causing myelomalacia- the softening and dying of the spinal cord. She let us know that this affects the nerves involved with breathing resulting in respiratory arrest and the fair choice was to let him go.
This was such a horrible sudden accident, it’s numbing to think Zest was just hiking on Sunday. We are so grateful that Dr. Russell for Zest on medication to make him comfortable and treat inflammation right away to give him a chance at recovery. When we decided we needed to leap into gold standard diagnostics with a Board Certified Surgeon, we are thankful for Bethany Keeble who got us an immediate appointment with Dr. Hampel to do an MRI and same day surgery. Thank you to Cheryl Square who jumped to action to help transport when we were tied up with kennel duty. Of course, we are grateful to Dr. Hampel for taking the case and staying late tonight with our Zest.
This isn’t fair, but just knowing that Zest did not suffer long, we got answers and were able to invest in them because of you- we fulfilled our promise to Zest. Thank you.
Fly high.

Date of Passing: July 14, 2023
Family: Teresa & Randy Petro
Fans: Caryn & Michael Rosenstein
Tribute: On July 14th, Teresa and Randy fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Kendrick.
They shared,
"Kendrick was my sweet and spicy hospice dog. I did his freedom ride from Downey and it was love at first sight. He came home with us a few weeks later. At the shelter they said he couldn't be touched. That was not my boy. In the beginning we took small steps with him and he became the most lovable boy. It was our Lamby time. He did hate the doctor and the groomer. He was quite naughty. He would howl so loud!! We ended up sedating a bit and it helped him through his anxiety. He loved to go on walks. They were short but then we would get in the stroller and head out. Even when he lost his hearing and sight he somehow heard the refrigerator open!😂😂
He had a rough time about a year ago and he rebounded and he continued to be a source of joy for us. He received fluids and some additional supplemental nutrition for the last year but he was always so calm and I think he knew it made him feel better. The weekend before he passed we went to Paso Robles. He enjoyed the green grass and the trees at the wineries. He ate lots of snacks and cuddled all night with me after our long days. I am so grateful the two of us had that time. He shifted quite suddenly and it was very clear he was tired and it was time to go. We have cried many tears and I still keep pulling his food dish. I am just so grateful that Frosted Faces took a chance on our boy. He has been one of our greatest gifts!!
Thank you Frosted Faces, Kennel Staff, Support Staff and Vet Staff for being there for us and Kendrick. We also want to thank Caryn and Michael Rosenstein for being Kendrick's monthly sponsor. You all made a big difference in this boy's life and ours!!"

Family: Julie Malone

Tribute: On February 27th, Julie fulfilled her promise to Big Boy.
Julie shared,
"From the moment I picked him up, he chose me. He sat in my arms and didn’t move even with all the energy of the little dog 'playground' at Frosted Faces. He had quite a personality and started off as a man of few words, silent in fact, but within three months he became very vocal and knew exactly what he wanted and was relentless.
He was a morning cuddler and I was lucky if I got 60 to 90 seconds before he was off being independent. My boy had the best potty manners, and was adamant that he was not going to go in the house. He was an excellent car rider and enjoyed 2 mile walks for about the first nine months. Big Boy randomly would grab a toy and play for about 45 seconds just before he was ready for a nap. He loved to nap with his head hanging over the edge.
It was sad to realize as he became more adamant in his demands, he was suffering from dementia. Dr. Russell and the Frosted Faces team were so good to him. The fact that he was almost 18 virtually blind, completely deaf, with no teeth, did not keep them from exhausting any and all treatments.
Although it was too short, I am so grateful to the Frosted Faces Foundation letting me be his momma. Thank you for getting him back to me so quickly. What a beautiful remembrance. He was such a sweet boy and I miss him so much."

"We said goodbye to baby Geneva last night 😔
She had a seizure around 11 pm and I had to take her to ER. I held her head and told her what a sweet pretty girl she is, then off to the rainbow bridge she went…
Her prognosis was days, or weeks if we’re lucky (due to metastatic lung cancer). And that was 4 months ago. So everyday for the last 4 months was a bonus.
And what did she get for this bonus round in her life..
Good food, good exercise, human bed, and lots and lots of never ending butt scratches and nose kisses. She went to the office with me often, made friends, sat on people’s feet, sniffed everything in downtown SD. She’s such a cuddles, and I will miss hugging her in bed.
Geneva was a happy happy sweet girl. And I’m glad her tail wagged until the very end.
🌈 Mommy loves you, Geneva baby. May you Rest In Peace 🌈"

Tribute: On April 30th, Anthony and Mariana fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Bruno.
Bruno was surrendered to the shelter after his guardian reported inappetence and vomiting for 3 weeks. The shelter did bloodwork and x-rays that were unremarkable, so treatment with omeprazole was indicated and seemed to be working.
Bruno just got sicker and sicker in our care. We did an ultrasound that showed a shockingly thick stomach wall, and Bruno still had bleeding in his GI tract. In the meantime, Anthony and Mariana decided that Bruno deserved a family for better or for worse. We tried anything the vet recommended and put Bruno in their good hands for supportive care to treat more aggressively. Transfusions, a feeding tube, and a lot of love, but the consensus was that Bruno was fighting lymphoma or a cancer in his stomach, and whether we could identify the cause or not, he was suffering and would die naturally if we did not offer him peace ourselves.
His exceptional parents write in memory,
"Dear Bruno,
Thank you for choosing us as your pet parents. We are sad you did not get to be with us a little longer but we know you will be happier and healthier in dog heaven. Gordo, your big brother, will be waiting there for you to teach you how to be goofy and mischievous.
We loved and cherished every minute we got to spent with you. We had envisioned a future for you full of toys, car rides, loud barks, and halloween customs but we know you are now enjoying the things you could not while you were here: bully sticks, squeaky toys, and tennis balls.
Happy trails to you baby boy.
Love,
Mom & Dad"

Acquired from: Inland Valley Humane Society
Age upon Rescue: 11

Date of Passing: May 28th, 2021
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Chelsea
Tribute: On May 28th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Lenore.
Lenore was a stray to Inland Valley Humane Society and no one claimed her. I had seen her networked online, and although we were heading to IVHS for other seniors, I hadn't planned to get her because she was so darn cute I figured she would have no trouble being adopted. When I learned she had trouble walking, we signed her up to join the freedom ride.
Thinking back to when I first saw her picture, I guess I didn't envision I would be holding her as she died. It's funny how this rescue thing works. The cutest dogs who should get placed quickly never leaving, dogs who I never thought I would have to worry too much about who'd been placed for years being returned, dogs who decline suddenly who seemed so healthy- FFF truly is the backbone for these dogs through the good, the bad, and the unimaginably, unpredictably sad. I am just so so glad we chose Lenore that day and that she had a family in the FFF volunteers to remind her that she mattered.
Lenore had elevated liver values, for which she sat for an ultrasound and low dose dex suppression test, and found nothing remarkable. We gave her weekly acupuncture, massage, and laser therapy. Lenore, with the softest little bear cub head, was on supplements and pain medication. She got frequent baths, a help 'em up harness, and home cooked chicken for meals. She got strolled around by volunteers on our FFF hikes on Sundays, and taken on special outings for individual time. Lenore paced so we kept her with the "Sunshine Seniors" inside during the hottest part of the days for monitoring where volunteers made sure she also had enough water.
We noticed Lenore declining because she was walking and eating less, so we let volunteers know they should start spending more time with her and saying goodbyes. Lenore made that final decision easy for us, as she passed away on her own on Friday afternoon with Alicia, Lexi, and me at her side.
I drove her body to the vet replaying all of our memories from that first shelter photo, to the pivotal "Yes," to holding her in the play yard with her head on my shoulder. We had her cremated and she will have a paw print returned "home" to FFF. We do not have the bodies of resident Frosted Faces privately cremated, so as the let their legacies live on by using those monies on the next Frosted Face in need of lifesaving care.
We love you, Lenore.

Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: April 7, 2021
Date of Passing: September 17, 2021
Family: Nichole Gooch
Fans: Nick & Heidi Nguyen
Tribute: Nichole fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Beeker.
She shared,
"Beeker's dementia was getting to a point that he was frightened and startled all the time. His kidneys were failing as well. I did not want him to suffer both physically and mentally, so I took him to my trusted vet to have him put to sleep. When they gave Beeker the first shot to sedate him, he let out the biggest sigh and I saw his body soften and relax. I realized that he probably has not felt that much relief in a while. So he is in complete peace now.
Beeker was a true gift that came to me during a really tough time. I lost two of my dogs within a few months of each other. Although I was really sad, when a friend mentioned your foundation I was intrigued. When I met Beeker, I was thankful your organization had rescued him and even more grateful I would have the opportunity to keep him as comfortable as possible until it was his time to go. His personality would come out from time to time when he had a lucid moment and he would almost hop/run for a few steps. I could see the dog he was before the dementia set in. He got to eat delicious food (and he had a great appetite), sleep in a comfy dog bed with his favorite blanket, pace in a little backyard and go on walks in a dog stroller. But he gave me so much more. He gave me peace to know that putting a pet down when they are sick and/or in pain (with little chance of recovery) is actually a beautiful gift you can give them - the gift of peace. Thank you Beeker! I have included a few pictures of Beeker."
Hannah Montana
Acquired from: Inland Valley Humane Society

Date of Passing: September 15, 2023
Family: Cameron Milbrandt
Fans: Donor In Memory of Cooper
Tribute: On September 15th, Cameron fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Hannah Montana.
She shared,
"Hannah “Banana” Montana
My baby girl from 5/13/21-9/15/23
Forever loved, always remembered
I first saw Hannah’s photo on the website in April 2021 and when I saw that smile I just knew that was my dog. I wasn’t ready to get another dog yet, so I asked to fling her but she was already scooped up at a fling, so I decided to foster her until adoption. A week into fostering Hannah, she had her first interest appointment in a potential adoption, I cried at the thought she would go to another family and decided she was already home.
26 months ago when Hannah was diagnosed with kidney disease, I knew this day would come sooner than I wanted, but I am still not ready for it. Yesterday I had to say goodbye to my sweet baby girl. My heart is broken into a million pieces. I take comfort in we lived it up each day doing her favorite things right to the end and she had a smile on her face everyday.
I will miss you getting annoyed with me giving you kisses all the time. The trips to McDonald’s for cheeseburgers that would perk you back up, the loving looks you would give me when we would go for walks at your favorite park. The big 1 bark and nudge of your nose on the back of my leg when I took too long to get your dinner ready. The waking up from a dead sleep and jumping to action whenever I said “you ready to go for a walk?” And the cute snoring you only ever seemed to have when we were at game night and partied too hard at friends’ houses.
Hannah loved car rides, stroller rides, golf cart rides, looking at Christmas lights, shopping, ladies lunches, trips to the mountains and beach, and people watching. She was well travelled having taken many trips trips to Palm Springs, Seal Beach, Doheny State Beach, Big Bear, and Twin Lakes.
Fly high my baby girl, mama loves her Hannah Banana forever and always. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️"
Elwood
Acquired from: Baldwin Park Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: April 7, 2021
Date of Passing: August 24th, 2021
Family: Christine & Dominic Castiglioni
Fans: Julianna Corby
Tribute: On August 24th, Christine and Dominic fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Elwood.
They shared,
"Cancer caught up with Elwood on August 24, 2021.
We had suspected that the metastatic mast cell tumors had spread to his brain, because he was having occasional petit mal seizures, but the tumors seemed to expand exponentially in the hours before his passing, causing increased seizures and sudden swelling that interfered with his airway. We took him to the ER, where a needle aspirate detected a solid mass between his cervical spine and trachea, another tumor. We did what we could, but our Elwood passed at the ER.
Though he was only with us a short time, Elwood was a joy to our household, integrating seamlessly and loving us and his Non-FF brother, Stax. We will miss his cheerful (and sometimes mischievous) spirit. He LOVED food, going for walks that always ended with a wagon ride home, cuddling with his brother, meeting neighborhood dogs, and food. He would unabashedly express his joy for living by rolling around on grass, in his bed, in horse poop. He leaves an Elwood shaped hole in our home and hearts. We will remember him forever."
Chulo
Acquired from: Downey Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 12
Date of Rescue: April 7, 2021
Date of Passing: March 9, 2022
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Shannon S., Stephanie Tillman, Ingrid D., Ann Caston, Jen Stahel
Tribute: Today we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Chulo.
We did everything we could for him and he lived every last good day, and as you know, a few bad ones.
Chulo was surrendered by his family to the shelter when his face with inflated with fluid. We rescued him when he was "72-hour listed."
Chulo was a medical mystery and we worked with several specialists doing many diagnostics trying to identify and treat his condition. In the end, we chalked it up to autoimmune flare-ups as a result of a cancerous disease process in his body. He had a very large splenic mass and poor renal values with non-regenerative anemia.
Over the course of this year, Chulo had two more terrible flare ups similar to the condition in which he was surrendered. He was on several medications to keep him comfortable, treat infection, help his heart, and protect his tummy.
Volunteers cleaned Chulo's "face flaps" twice each day, and hand fed him on days that he was picky. He got frequent butt-baths and outfit changes as his skin and fur deteriorated. Volunteers and Kennel Managers treated Chulo lovingly and as their own. We are surrounded by so many good people up here.
What we knew was that Chulo wanted to live and we were going to do everything we could for him. He was all of ours to share. He went on nearly every hike where he "sang the song of his people." Andrew Gooch and Sarah Kennedy typically chose him to walk- no sweeter couple. Angela McNeil regularly took him out on dates to the park and the winery for Valentine's Day. We will never forget Kenneth and Charlotte Barnhardt taking Chulo home for a Frosted Fling during the "I am the Storm" campaign. It was his one and only chance to be in a real home for an extended period of time. THEY were the storm...amazing people.
Chulo knew how to play fetch and loved treat puzzles. We took him on a 4-day vacation to Idyllwild, where he met Mayor Max and slept by the fire. He went to the beach a few times too!
Chulo hated his play yard rotation as he grew out of having dog friends, the proof was in the chewed up door frames, so he was escorted to the Smíšek side of the house after breakfast to lay next to Andy while he worked instead. Chulo was tough to make a permanent commitment for because he was not great with dogs, he was destructive, and chirped during the night relentlessly. I think we all did what we could, wishing we could do more.
Most recently we moved Chulo into The Smíšek side of the house to monitor him. Just last night he laid on my lap to watch a movie. This morning he fell a couple times on his morning walk and had terrible diarrhea. I bathed him, redressed him, and Andy took over. It wasn't too long after that Andy smelled more diarrhea and saw Chulo had gone limp. He rushed Dr. Russell to our side of the house where Chulo then began agonal breathing and all of Chulo's people surrounded him as we euthanized him quickly.
Chulo was a dog you just wanted all good things for because he had been dealt an unfair hand medically. You know guys, FFF volunteers and donors, you gave him ALL GOOD THINGS. He passed with a fresh purple sweater on, a diaper around his waist, a belly full of fresh boiled chicken and multiple hands placed gently on him. We got him here, to his last day with dignity and meaningful memories.
Thank YOU for being Chulo's final family.
We would love to see your photos in the comments. xo
We loved you, Chu.
Teddy Bear
Acquired from: San Diego Humane Society
Age upon Rescue: 11
Date of Rescue: April 7, 2021
Date of Passing: May 5, 2022
Family: David & Jennifer Banta
Fans: Nicollet, Donna Green
Tribute: On May 5th, David and Jennifer fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Teddy Bear to what could only be diagnosed as liver failure. This is a very special family who stepped up for Teddy Bear, who was on several anti-seizure medications and eye drops at a ripe old age, too. They loved him for whatever he needed. Being part of his life and the last few agonizing days in the hospital was heartbreaking to watch as Teddy Bear's body failed and his family desperately loved him.
They shared,
"We lost our beloved Teddy Bear earlier this month and our home is not the same. He quickly became a part of our family winning over the hesitant middle child and then taking his time to warm up to the men. He knew my mom needed extra care and would guard her when she visited. He knew to leave my dad alone when he stretched on the floor or else he was due for extra loving.
Not immediately affectionate, Teddy learned that if he endured hugs and cuddles he could ask for an extra treat. Until his last week he barely tolerated being picked up. Usually if we picked him up he demanded a treat as soon as he was set down. He needed help to get into the car but often rumbled at you as you helped him in. In his last week we had to carry him but when we picked him up he not only didn't grumble but would give us kisses.
Teddy loved his walks, his food, and his people. He refused breakfast until after his morning jaunt around the neighborhood. He insisted on 'elevensies' or his 11am chewy treat. Sometimes he insisted on it at 9:30 with the hope that we would grow confused and offer him another one later. He learned all of our schedules and would wait for us in the right place at the right time. He would grow restless if someone was later than he expected. Now, after my morning run he isn't there to walk it off with me. When I come in at 11 I need to adjust to him not herding me into the kitchen to get him his snack. I wait up alone for late children unaccompanied by his snores.
Given time we will be ready for another Frosted Face but Teddy Bear was about perfect for our family and will be a hard act to follow."

Age upon Rescue: 12
Date of Rescue: April 7, 2021
Date of Passing: February 10, 2023
Family: Joyce Floyd
Fans: Arianna & Nymeria
Tribute: On February 10th, Joyce fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Daffy.
She shared,
"Kelly puts out pleas occasionally for hospice dogs needing families and Daffy was one of two at the time who needed a home sooner rather than later.
I brought Daffy home on November 20th along with a bag full of medication and fluids. Dr Russell told me he had never seen a heart as bad as hers and she was also in kidney failure.
The great thing about most hospice dogs is that they don’t know that they are hospice dogs. Daffy (even though she was blind) quickly figured out the house, where the water is and where the door to go outside is. Her hearing was great! She knew when I was in the kitchen and would come to see if she could get a treat. For a long time she ate pretty well. She loved walking around the backyard and laying in the sun. Because of her heart she went on stroller rides instead of walks. She loved to cuddle on the couch and would come over to me to be picked up. I would cuddle her and she would put her little head on my chest.
People ask how I can bring home a dog who I know I’m going to lose. I tell them how can I not? Each dog deserves a loving home and my heart goes out to the hospice dogs. The kidney disease kicked in and Daffy would no longer eat. She went over the Rainbow Bridge on February 10th. Many tears were shed for sweet Daffy by me, the Kennel Managers, and the Vet Techs. She was loved."

We treated Sugar Plum for frequent seizures trying all kinds of meds and different doses. Poor little SP just didn't have the quality anymore balancing the frequency of seizures and dullness from medication
Her dad shared,
"Very saddening, but I’m glad she isn’t suffering anymore. I wanted to thank you for bring Sugar Plum into my life and all the love and medical attention you provided her. Thanks again."

Tribute: On April 21st, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Fletch.
We don't exit a lot of dogs from Pasadena, but when they really need help with placement of a special dog they reach out. Fletch was very very thin and a bit disoriented at FFF. He slept a lot, and volunteers had to make an effort to engage with him because he was not readily social.
Without us even knowing it, sometimes FFF acts as a last beautiful place to take a deep breath and relax in the sun under the breezy shade sails, and be held with loving arms. That's all we gave him, and that's all we could give him in the time he was with us.
Alicia noted he seemed to stop breathing at times while sleeping, so we took him to the vet where they redid chest x-rays and performed an exam. Nothing seemed to be evident to cause this, so he was started on antibiotics for nasal congestion. Just hours after returning home from the vet he looked even more terrible and his temperature was dropping. We rushed him back to the vet where we let him go as it was clear he was passing.
The vet offered to do a necropsy for us to give us some peace, and she found masses on his liver and spleen, but the likely cause of death was endocarditis, which she explained is difficult to diagnose without an echo and there were little to no symptoms to warrant one previously.
I feel like Fletch was stolen from us because we lost him with so little warning, and the finality of it all with no opportunity to battle is just heartbreaking.
We have to understand that Fletch was likely suffering for awhile and the greatest gift was peace. We loved you, Fletch.

He shared,
"I adopted Millie (formerly Cinnamon) and her brother Otis (formerly Kheo) back in May 2021. I had actually seen Otis on the adoption page and went up to FF to see him. When I talked to Alicia about fostering/adopting him, she told me that he was surrendered with 2 other dogs and they were looking to try and keep them all together. Unfortunately, I could only take 2 due to the HOA rules at my condo. She pointed out Jet and Millie and I spent time with both of them. It was immediately clear to me that Millie was much more interested in me and was such a sweet girl. I'm sure Jet is a great dog, but I feel like I made the right call in taking Millie along with Otis. Everyone who met her instantly loved her. She always had a smile on her face. Otis is a great dog, but whenever I had friends watch the dogs, they all said that Millie was always welcome because she was so easy and sweet. She loved nothing more than eating everything anyone would feed her and getting her belly rubbed. If you stopped the belly rubs too soon, she would paw at you to continue until she was satisfied. We found out she had lymphoma in March, but you wouldn't know she was sick until a few weeks ago. Thankfully she didn't suffer very long, but it was pretty clear it was time to let her cross the rainbow bridge. I'll always love her and will miss her a lot."

Tribute: We are terribly sorry to share that today we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Gertie.
Gertie was brought to the shelter as a stray and we rescued her nearly two years ago. We hate to call FFF a sanctuary because we believe that every dog deserves their own devoted family... but we were Gertie's sanctuary. She never got adopted, she enjoyed a few months in foster thanks to Lauren Wigen, but Gertie's happy place was at FFF. The FFF volunteers and staff were Gertie's family.
Gertie was so gentle that she lived in the Littles' Area! She must have seen over 1,000 new friends come and go. She slept on big comforters out on the floor beneath the Littles' kennels like their guardian. She knew exactly when meal time was and would bark and wail for food. Even though she was blind, she figured out where and how to walk up the ramp into the house too! Gertie did not like to walk on a leash so you will see a bunch of pictures of people carrying her. She acted like dramatic dead weight and extended her legs to prevent you from getting her in doorways. It was RIDICULOUS! Bedtime was always an ordeal, just like a toddler! We joked about making it part if volunteer initiation to carry Gertie as far as you could!
Gertie was quiet, shied away from touch, and independent. Part of me felt the weight of that statement we all know too well, "The trouble is, you think you have time," thinking one day a family would choose her. I had the privilege of going through every one of the volunteers' photos of Gertie in our Behind the Scenes pages tonight. I am surprised and touched by how many photos I found from various volunteers who were just in awe of her temperament, adored her new neckwear from week to week, the silly antics she displayed, and all of the fun things she did with them.
Gertie went on the weekend FFF hikes where we attempted to stroll her, but ended up letting her meander her own path. She dressed up for holidays, went to the beach, had a tea party, attended fundraising events, got brushed frequently, volunteers hosted a birthday party last year for her in the park, she went to the pumpkin patch, and probably to her dismay, shared a room with the vet staff where they were poking at her eyes a lot lately for treatment.
Gertie seemed like Gertie. Even last night at 10:50pm Gertie was alert and comfortable watching Jordan distribute night time meds. We checked cameras, as we have one on all the kennels and yards now, to understand what may have caused Gertie's passing. Around 12:18am Gertie was sleeping laterally, did a big "stretch" and relaxed, which is where we found her positioned on her bed early this morning.
The Kennel Managers are hurting, she was their girl and the image of Alicia standing over Gertie sobbing will be burned in my brain. This is a tough job, but it is a rewarding one, and I am so grateful these Frosted Faces are loved like family. Thank you to you volunteers who show up for Gertie and all of the other Frosted Faces week to week. "If not you, then who?"
We love you, Gertie.

Dawn shared,
"We lost our Millie on April 21. Millie came to us around Easter time last year. I saw her picture on the Frosted Faces website and read that she had been taken to the shelter because her person had been taken away from a vehicle. She had been in the car with them and I just knew she was the one.
I figured that something bad had happened to the owner since they never tried to retrieve her and I could tell that she had been loved and cared for by the way she acted. We figured out a few months later that she had actually belonged to my daughter in law's uncle who had died. We have pictures of her in her previous life. I can't imagine the chance that I would pick this particular dog from all the dogs out there needing homes. She has had a great last year of her life except for cancer and kidney failure that finally took her.
She had 3 sisters and they all got along very well. When we first got her she was very playful and loved to fetch a ball. She has been loved very much by our entire family and we will continue to miss her for a long time."

"Sadly, August 3rd we said goodbye to sweet little tiny Dino.
On March 18th Dino came to us as half of a bonded pair. Seeing pics of his and Caesar's freedom ride ate my brain...they had to be homed together...the only regret would be every day they were not part of us. The first few weeks he kept us busy. We syringed him and toted him back and forth from Poway Emergency Vet and College Animal Hospital.
He was only 3.5 lbs, but he kept us on our toes and ruled our roost. We loved accommodating all his quirks and were amazed how he could be so tiny and delicate but buck like a deer to get to his dinner. He was a funny little dude. He was just the cutest with the most soulful round eyes and the perfect little black nose on a fuzzy frosted face. Grateful that once he introduced us to his routine and trained us to care for his needs and fancy taste in foods
ALL his days were good days, in the last 4 months we forgot he was 14 and underweight. Dino was our 5th senior to teach us the time we have to love is never enough.
Grateful to FFF and everyone involved who made it possible for Dino to be part of our lives. We loved him and will always miss him."

Tribute: Yesterday we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Dundee.
Early in the day the doctor let us know that Dundee's left lung was clearing with steroids, he was eating and able to take pills orally, and that they would start to wean him off of oxygen so that he could possibly come home today. Lori and Jason, Dundee's former Fling Family, had an opportunity to visit him in the morning and give him lots of snuggles and snacks.
Hours later they let us know that a path review of Dundee's bloodwork pointed toward having lymphoma. We opted to continue to treat him since he was improving and to get him home for whatever time he had left.
Late last night the doctor called to share that Dundee had lost color and his belly was full of clear fluid. He had a giant mass on his spleen that was likely also the lymphoma, which had not been previously noted because we were focusing so much on his lungs.
We texted the kennel staff and every single Kennel Manager showed up at VSH - San Marcos in their jammies to be with Dundee. Alicia, Maira, Lexi, Andy, and I all loved him as our own. FFF Volunteer, Kelly Ritchason, was the RVT on Dundee's case, and she took this nice photo of staff huddled around our boy and offered him pizza as his last meal. We cried a mess of tears, told Dundee how much you all loved him while squeezing him tightly, and sent Dundee to heaven.
Please share your memories of Dundee with us in the Comments and Stories. xo
We love you, Dundee.

"My sweet Ruthie girl passed away last night. Although she was diabetic and her health wasn’t the best, it was still sudden.
Adopting an elderly dog, we knew this day would come sooner than later. But we wanted to give a dog in need a loving home and a great life in their final years. Ruthie definitely received that! She got all of our attention, a house and yard to herself, and got to go on adventures with us. We are so heartbroken and miss her already. The house feels so empty without her following me around all day.
My favorite memories will be the ones where Richard and I would sit on our front porch in the rocking chairs and Ruthie would be wrapped in a blanket on my lap. She loved us so much, especially me, her Mommy! We love you forever Ruthie.
Thank you Frosted Faces Foundation for giving us the sweetest dog to love and be a part of our family. We are forever grateful and blessed to have had her in our lives."

She shared,
"I had to say goodbye to my sweet HoneyBee yesterday. I first met her on May 9,
2021 on my second volunteer shift at Frosted Faces. I remember walking into the littles’ room and spotting this quiet, little chihuahua in the crowd. I exclaimed, “Who are you?!” and without any hesitation I picked her up. I took her on an outing and decided to fling her. Well…you all know how that works out. Bee was a hospice foster fail but went on to spend 845 wonderful days with me and my family. She lived with her two non-FF sisters, Ellie and Luna.
Luna especially adored her and would always sneak over into Bee’s bed to cuddle. Bee wasn’t the biggest fan but couldn’t really say no to her little sis! Bee was also a foster sister to 8 dogs and 20 kittens. She was such a gentle and curious pup. She was so quiet and would often accompany me everywhere she was able to. I would carry her in a backpack to go hiking and I loved hearing people go, “Oh my gosh there’s a dog in there!” Bee didn’t have a lot of expressions and we had a running joke that nothing really impressed her but I could easily tell when she was happy.
She loved sitting on my lap, burrowing under blankets, and rolling around in her favorite donut bed. She always knew when I was leaving the house and would cry and chase after me. She never barked but she would cry just like a human baby and make us all laugh. Bee brought me so much joy. Everyone who knows me knows how much I loved her. I have so many precious memories of her and I will miss her forever.
Thank you to the entire Frosted Faces team. Thank you for letting me be HoneyBee’s mom 🐝💛🐝"
Dexter

Date of Passing: February 27, 2022
Family: Cassie Dexter & Cameron Torti
Fans: Melanie Thorn, Sue Schefman
Tribute: On February 27th, Cameron and Cassie fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Dexter.
Dexter originally was boarding with us through our Frosted Friends Program while his family was on vacation. Upon return, they asked if we would keep him because he barked during their kids' zoom calls and they didn't have time for him. We laughed it off, because it kind of seemed like a joke, and sure enough volunteers spotted his profile at San Diego Humane Society weeks later.
As much as we hate to see the dogs live long lives with their families and then be disposed of, it was refreshing to see how much love and time Dexter's new family devoted to him. He was so lucky to be cherished for the last of his days!
They shared,
"After we saw Dexter (Dexter Morgan) at an open house last May, we couldn't stop talking about him and thinking about how he could fit into our family. We had three cats and a small apartment at the time, but decided that a little guy who loved to nap would easily fit in! While we worked from home, Dexter loved curling up at our feet. He’d wake up from time to time to check on us, and when he’d notice we were still nearby, he’d give us a little lick on the ankle or foot before making himself a tiny little ball again.
With Dexter being blind and deaf, he understandably didn’t like to be alone and we thought he should never have to feel that way for the rest of his days. Once the pandemic restrictions began to lift, we got to take Dexter everywhere with us. Maybe surprising (or not) in San Diego, we were never turned away with our 8 lb old man in tow. His sling was one of his favorite places to be, hanging out next to us and popping his nose out to smell the world and say hi! Dexter went everywhere including work at the brewery (he had many fans there), hikes, errands, appointments, vacations and camping trips, friend's houses, and even participated in a cornhole tournament.
When we found Dexter, we knew his heart condition would make life a little tougher, but once we got him on medicine for it, his energy was great for the most part. We had a few scares along the way in which we thought he might pass, but Dexter pulled through and bounced back each time. However, a couple weeks ago, he deteriorated quickly, and after one long night, he passed early on a Sunday morning right where we thought he would have wanted to be - resting on Cameron's chest. Dexter never felt alone.
We have been overwhelmed by the love and support we’ve received on behalf of Dexter. It is clear he was loved in a big way, as it seemed anyone who met him was immediately charmed by his sweet and cuddly ways. We have missed him incredibly in the time he’s been gone, wishing we could hold him again or get another one of his patented happy-you’re-around licks, but we are so grateful for all the time we shared together. We love you Dexter!"

Tribute: On May 30th, Camille and Cody fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Trucker.
They shared,
"I’m very sad to share that Trucker has passed away. A couple months ago, he had a very intense seizure and we rushed him to the ER. We got him an MRI which showed two main intravascular brain tumors, one was roughly 1cm, and the other was snaking around and covering 10% of the surface of his brain. The neurologist told me that if it was type of tumor he thought it was, then he wouldn’t have much more time left with us.
We took him to Dr Russell who found tumors on his spleen and both kidneys, which would have confirmed the neurologist’s diagnosis. We started him on steroids and gave him an absolutely amazing last few weeks of life.
We took him out to breakfast several times, where we ordered him his own plate of waffles and he absolutely LOVED it. Every single time he would beg for my food over those weeks, I gave it to him. Cody would make extra chicken or steak specifically for Trucker. I fell asleep on the couch snuggling him so many nights that I made a temporary bed out there since that’s where Trucker wanted to be. I would snuggle him as much as he wanted, whenever he wanted. We took him on extra walks. We let him have everything he wanted and he was so, so happy.
We made the hard decision to have Lap of Love come to our house to put Trucker to sleep in the comfort of his own bed, while he was snuggling his best friend Seymour. We are so grateful that we know the end of his life was peaceful, and that his last few memories were happy since he was getting absolutely spoiled.
I miss him so much. I know most of us know that our Frosted Face’s time will come soon. But Trucker was a younger dog who was only deemed a Frosted Face because he was bonded with a hospice Clarabelle. He was “supposed” to be around for many more years, and I was definitely counting on that time with him. We had just bought a car big enough to fit the pups on road trips, and now the vision of our family in the future feels empty without him.
As anyone who followed our updates might remember, he had come such a long way. He went from snapping and biting me and all of our dogs, and being fearful of every new person in the house, to loving Seymour and viewing him as a comforting presence that he would seek out. He went from cowering from house guests, to warming up and getting excited for the extra attention. Rather than being scared of his own shadow on walks, he started barking at the neighborhood dogs with a happy tail. He finally, finally, got to live the life of a confident, happy, and loved dog who was truly a part of our family.
I’m so grateful of the time we got to spend with him, and I feel so lucky to have given him a couple years filled with happiness. I miss his goofy smile with his tongue sticking out, and I miss him snuggling me. I love you Trucker ❤️"

Tribute: On July 7th, Glenda and Dennis fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Teddy.
She shared,
"Last Friday, my dear Teddy crossed the Rainbow Bridge on our way to an appointment at Frosted Faces to see Dr. Russell. I’m devastated to lose him this way and so unexpectedly but I’d rather focus on the blessings he brought to my life and the good times and love we shared.
Teddy just had celebrated his 2nd Frostiversary with us on June 15th. During our 2 years together, he became my shadow, my constant companion, my snuggle bug, my boy. He was literally my little soulmate and my favorite memories are of him looking deep into my soul with those big brown eyes. He wasn’t a kissy dog in the normal way but his way was to kiss my feet, my ankles, my arms, my hands. He slept on our bed and every morning, either he would wake me up by plopping down with his head as close to my face as possible or I would pat my bed by my face and he would come and plop for his morning massage.
When I left the kitchen without him and he was behind the gate, I swear he screamed “Momma”! He had some serious separation anxiety not being with me.
I just always wished I knew his “story” and why he was found as a stray in the OC but I do know that we, my family of humans and dogs, gave him as much love and caring as we possibly could. We had a great 2 years and as much as I hate losing him, I know he’s not in pain anymore.
I sincerely thank, from the bottom of my heart, the Frosted Faces family for all you do for these sweet souls. I especially want to thank Alicia and Maira for their hugs last week when I showed up at the door, and to Dr. Russell for your kind and caring support. Thank you for looking into the reason for Teddys death and helping me find a little peace in this tragedy. Thank you to the Vet team for always being SO caring and to the Family Support team (especially Bethany) for responding to my panicked text and to Jennifer for always trying to find a way to help and last, but certainly not least, to Kelly for your concern and advice and support these past 2 years.
Rest in Peace Teddy! Mommy misses you so much!"
