It has been a month long rollercoaster during the time he was sick, I was so excited to see him slowly start to eat again and extremely saddened when his progress soon stopped. My little warrior was a true fighter and was willing to stay with us despite his discomfort.

I didn’t know you as a puppy but I wish I knew you for your entire life and wherever you are I hope you’re happy and content. Tribute: On Wednesday afternoon, Carson Shelter staff called us requesting an exit of a #A5481296, listed as 5 year old Buddy the beagle who had had a seizure. We were to exit him as a foster for the shelter since his stray hold was not up and we could "Frost" him if he was not claimed. It was near to closing time and we promised to send a volunteer transporter by morning.
We actually learned later that Buddy was found as a lost dog that day and reunited with the owner. For some reason, perhaps because he was seizing and could not pursue care, Buddy was surrendered to Carson shelter by his family as a "stray," which caused him to have to endure a 5 day stray hold at the shelter instead of finding immediate exit. The finder also let us know Buddy was only 2 years old.
Debbie Reily got there at 10am sharp where it was explained to her that Buddy had several seizures throughout the night, given midazolam and a loading dose of phenobarbital. She brought him to FFF as quickly as she could where Dr. Russell continued care. Buddy had another seizure at FFF and slept it off on good meds. Around 6:00pm that evening he was suddenly up and toodling around!! We fed him chicken that he gobbled down and disconnected him for a sunset potty walk. Buddy sat on Dr. Russell's lap while he finished up records and got ready to end his day.
Everyday Dr. Russell sees sick dogs and he does his best for them, but at the end of the day we make a plan to get care covered in his absence so he can go home to his family and own animals. We were pleasantly surprised and very grateful that he offered to take Buddy home and continue his care throughout the night! Buddy and his adorable beagle-bod walked right out of FFF down the driveway on his leash. Things were looking up!
It was the late night text we didn't want to read.
Buddy had progressively worse seizures, to a point where Dr. Russell and his veterinarian wife, Jen, were doing CPR for him and had to call it. Dr. Russell said these seizures seemed much worse than uncontrolled epilepsy, but perhaps a tumor, infection, or toxicity from running astray.
This is not what we wanted for sweet Buddy, and I wish his family was with him. Thank you to Debbie for volunteering to drive all the way to LA for our boy, and to Dr. Russell and staff for making Buddy a priority on Thursday with a full case load.

Tribute: On June 17th, Charlotte fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Scheffler when he suffered from internal bleeding a day after a splnectomy.
Charlotte shared,
"When I picked up Scheffler I honestly hadn’t even spotted him on the website or seen him mentioned on Behind the Scenes Pages. I am so glad Kelly bought him out.
We feel so privileged to have shared in Scheffler’s final days this side of the bridge. Old dogs are so special, they teach us to slow down, to let go of expectations and live & love in the present, Scheffler was no exception. He made us laugh with his headstands and snuffling to make his bed the most comfortable it could possibly be (we even added a duvet to the dog bed so we could make him extra snuggly and keep his bald ears warm). He melted our hearts with his kisses and tail wags and warmed them with his instant attachment to the children. The children loved having a dog who was so chill that they could walk, snuggle and nap with him.
I text my husband when I got him and said “no pre-judgement! He’s really sweet, just super old and poorly." We quickly fell in love with him! Every foster dog we have I’m fairly sure at some point I say to my husband, “Shall we just keep them?” (to which he tells me what I tell the children, “Then there will be no more foster dogs for our family,”) but with Scheffler we knew he probably didn’t have long left and he really did just want a comfy bed and some consistency, so we decided to talk about it after his surgery.
It was so exciting to me when he was comfortable enough with us to get a bit more demanding - still easy by most dog standards - he started to spit his pills out and just eat the ham to encourage us to level up the treats, he would make his funny not-quite-a-bark if we went to bed before him and didn’t take him with us until I came and tucked him in, he decided our dog looked pretty warm and cozy and he decided he would snuggle with him and he started staying up later to hang out with us and see if wine made us more liberal with the treats..*spoiler*.. it does!
Scheffler had a pretty pronounced pot belly and we knew we were waiting for surgery to see if he would get better after a splenectomy or whether he would become a hospice dog. It’s so hard to find compassion for or understand how someone could give up their dog at this point of their lives, especially one as sweet, loving and easy as Scheffler, I wish we had had longer with him, but we showed him as much love as possible in his short time with us. The night before his surgery we went for a sniff around the neighborhood and he stayed up dancing with us and shared a pretty epic rib dinner.
The vet said his spleen was the size of a soccer ball and showed evidence of prior bleeding so it seems pretty undoubtable that the surgery was the right choice. He slept in our room next to our bed when he got back from surgery and I took him to FF the next day for pain management, unfortunately it wasn’t good news. I’m so grateful I was able to say goodbye to him and to Dr Russell and FF staff for making the hard but kind choice to let him go and be free of pain. Sweet dreams buddy."

"These photos of our darling Bogey really say it all. That gaze. He looked right into our souls, and in those eyes we saw gratitude, love, devotion, and courage.
There was some sadness, too. And a bit of frustration and pain.
Bogey came to us with vestibular disease and some gnarly arthritis. It made walking a hefty chore for him, but we love how he found his place of comfort & security right in the middle of our living room. He wore his dapper diapers with dignity, and loved to be served his meals from his living room throne.
All our photos show him at peace in his happy place. Being able to provide this life of luxury for him is so gratifying.
Bogey gave us one year exactly. What a poignant trip around the sun with him.

"Sad to report that Charlotte has crossed that rainbow bridge Tuesday, March 14th. Earlier the night before she was having multiple seizures and showed no signs of letting up. We immediately headed over to the Animal Hospital in San Marcos. They took her right in to the exam room without a wait. The Doctor came out to waiting room after half an hour and told us that the brain tumor she had behind her right eye was the cause. She led us to a private exam room, and we discussed the quality of life she would have which we found out is minimal. It was at that point we decided to end her suffering.
Charlotte has been a member of our family for 6 and a half months. She had become my little buddy and she had to be at my side at all times. When I had to run some errands in town, she would wait at the door until I came home. If I was outside, she had to be outside. When I came in, she had to come in. We developed a regular routine. When it was time for bed, all I had to say is 'bedtime' and off she would go
to be tucked in. She would get up about 8:30 the next morning, go outside to do her thing and then follow me into kitchen for her meds. She took them as long as we hide them in some yummy cold cuts or hotdog. She had a pretty good appetite and her pickiness all but disappeared.
Charlotte was an incredible dog. She was never cuddly but loved the head rubs and belly rubs I could provide. She has left a huge hole in our hearts in just the short time she was with us. She will be missed."

He was struggling more and more each day with his CCD and after much discussion with Dr. D we decided it was time to let him find some peace. We just celebrated his Gotcha Day on February 7. I honestly didn’t know if he’d make it a year. We are so grateful for the chance to love him. Today there is a big hole in our hearts. But we also believe that the best way to honor him is to help another dog in need. We will do that after we’ve had some time to grieve over our sweet boy."

"When we first went up to FF we were looking for someone to foster. When we saw Hua Hua far across the yard amongst all the other dogs we knew immediately that he was the one for us. He was 17 then with quite a few medical issues including a large mass on his back requiring regular wound care. We took him in to help tuned up and well enough so he could have surgery to get the mass removed and a badly needed dental. During that time we became attached to him and formally adopted him. After the surgery he was a bit touch and go for a while as his other issues with his heart, kidneys, UTIs and immune system all flared up at once. He took some time and care, but we were able to get him back into good health and stable for quite a while. He even improved mobility significantly after his chiropractor visits. He even got to spend his 18th birthday with us!
He would love roaming around in the back yard and soaking up the sun, rubbing his face in the fuzzy dog bed and cuddling next to his sister Andy. One of his favorite things were cheek scratches where he would wrap his front paws around your arm and not let go so you wouldn’t stop.
In late March be began to decline and stopped eating. He developed another infection that was resistant to just about everything and his lab values got worse. He had rallied many times before, but we had to accept this time was different and it was time to let him go and say goodbye. I will miss him dearly. From his loving of cheek scratches to hearing his old man grumbles and his love for beef and cucumbers. He was such a little trooper but a big part of our family, even if only for the few months we had him. We love you Hua.”

Tribute: #A5482346 7 year old Obi was brought into Baldwin Park Shelter as an over the counter stray and not claimed. He appeared healthy on intake, but shortly thereafter was having trouble breathing. The shelter treated him with broad spectrum antibiotics and antifungals for a respectable period of time ~10 days.
On Wednesday evening I received a call from a frantic networker at about 5:50pm letting me know that that shelter felt Obi was suffering and beyond their capacity for care so he would require a rescue exit or be euthanized at close. The shelter closes at 7pm and surely some other rescue closer to Baldwin Park who is more of a breed specific rescue would help. Working under the constant pressure of urgency and emotion is so stressful.
I started casually messaging rescues I thought who would exit Obi more efficiently than FFF. Sal Valdepena promised to coordinate the pull with Cathi Perez and vet Obi at the local ER until I could coordinate transport to FFF in the morning. This was Obi's golden ticket!
Volunteers, Teresa Petro and Jayne Kleinfeld, got up early to pick Obi up at the ER in OC at 7:00am and get him to FFF for continued care with Dr. Russell. Obi's lungs are not pretty, but he is eating and even trotting around! We have run multiple tests on him and transferred him to Animal Urgent Care for the weekend.
We had the opportunity to bathe Obi while he was at FFF and scrape the crusties off. He was so silly in the car putting his tushy up on everything and giving kisses.
Late on Saturday evening, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Obi. When the vet called Saturday afternoon to let us know we needed to move Obi to oxygen, we said, "Go for it." We understand pneumonia takes time to treat, and we've got time and money all for him- he can take as long as it takes. They said he was producing good boogers and coughing, but had a long way to go.
We knew we were fighting an uphill battle when the shelter vet thought Obi was suffering, and even after Sal's vet saw rads, he asked if he still wanted to treat. We all saw Obi's sweet doughy eyes, got two great days out of him that made us feel like we were fighting the good fight.
When we got the call that Obi had suddenly gone agonal, letting him go was the right choice, the only choice. How much temporary suffering does a sick animal have to endure during treatment built on hope? It's not always easy to know. This is a photo Alicia took after disconnecting Obi's catheter for a quick potty break. He had just eaten a big plate of boiled chicken, he was clean from a bath and breathing more easily. Maybe losing Obi was fate, but that shelter exit and everyone's efforts were worth it for this good day to know he mattered.

"On July 25, 2022 I brought this little guy home that Kelly said needed a home & to be loved. He wasn’t doing well. Being the 2nd oldest at 18 1/2 years old.
My dream in life, was when I retired I wanted to take the oldest dog in the shelter & give it a home & lots of love for the rest of their life. Well FFF has done that part, so I just needed to bring home who needed it the most at that time.
He left as RUFFY FLOOF, but changed his name to YODI. Everyone kept saying he looked like YODA, that was too common of a name. We wanted him to have a special name, he was so special he had many names , YODI, YODI-RUNI, YODERS, YOGURT,
YODI WODI, LITTLE BUDDY, LITTLE MAN & I am sure there were more names.
Everyday YODI started to perk up & love his new home , the love & attention he was getting from us & his new doggie, kitty & tortoise sisters.
As I have posted before he would get so excited & start hoping around & be so silly we couldn’t stop laughing! (Frosted faker🤔)
YODI had found new happiness in his life . At first he was able to take little walks on his leash & longer ones in his stroller. He loved going everywhere with me & of course all the attention he got from everyone. People would want to talk about him, pet him & even ask me what aisle I found him on, then wanted one . (YES I TOLD THEM ABOUT FFF)
YODI went on so many fundraiser walks with me & always dressed for the occasion with an outfit I made for him & little blanket. He loved being in the stroller & taking in all the smells. We walked several hundred miles in that stroller. I took YODI everywhere & he was always such a good boy.
YODI ended up going downhill quickly before the end of the year. Dr Russel felt it could be a brain tumor & doggie dementia. He was so good about keeping in touch with me & helping to keep YODI comfortable.
We knew Yodi’s time was almost here when he quit enjoying everything & not being able to do anything anymore.
A funny story though, Yodi would only give me one kiss a day & with his dementia getting worse he would give me a few kisses a day, forgetting he already gave me my daily kiss & I loved it. 💞💕
As you can see I could go on & on about all the love & joy YODI brought to me & of course my family.
I can also honestly say I know I gave YODI the most love & happiness he could have ever had his last 19 1/2 months of life & for that I am grateful.
I miss him so much & he became such an important part of my life. Although he is now pain free.

Tribute: On September 2nd we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Bentley.
Bentley entered the shelter after his guardian had a medical emergency. The shelter had extensive medical records about his diarrhea and inappetence, of which we experienced here at FFF immediately. We did absolutely everything we could for him from diagnostics to treatment, sparing no expense, including multiple ultrasounds, and liver and intestinal biopsies. We watched Bentley decline ever so slowly to a point where he was jaundice and had blood values that were not compatible with life, and we needed to decide that euthanasia was kinder than finding the exact cause of his suffering. There was no time left.
On Bentley's final day he had fluid in his abdomen and had developed pneumonia. I don't want to make it sound like we made him suffer, but because Bentley was so stoic and so many of you got to love him, I want to emphasize how much we did for him trying to give him every last good day.
Circling back two months, Andy and I decided to foster Bentley thinking that maybe he had stress diarrhea after such a big life change. We have fostered literally thousands of animals, and we have never cleaned up more diarrhea in our lives- fire hydrant, watery spewing diarrhea multiple times each day for weeks. Bentley was clearly very very sick. I kept thinking we would look back and laugh about the ridiculousness of it saying, "Remember when you were so sick, Bentley?" On top of that, he wouldn't eat, not even the best foods in the fridge. We figured out that Bentley would eat at least a small amount of whatever we were eating or cooking- so maybe scraps was the answer! We know, not so good for the diarrhea, but we were desperate.
We even went so far as pretending to sit at the table with dog food on our plates, where he would beg, and then decline to eat. But, he knew when we were eating Cheerios, spaghetti, even lettuce salad and gobbled that down... at first.
As we problem solved, we simply loved him. Just loved him to pieces, really. Losing him feels so surprising, thinking we were working through a diagnosis to cure him, and now he is gone. He went biking, out to ice cream, walked around Fiesta Island where he showed us he knew how to play fetch, he watched movies with us, attended breweries, and marched around FFF Open Houses as the sweetest thing you ever did see. He spent many days laying at Andy's feet while he worked.
Thank you to the Kennel Staff, Maira, Lexi, and Alicia for finding all the good "noms" in the fridge and doing all the butt baths. Thank you to the FFF Vet Staff who always begrudgingly, yet kiddingly, welcomed Bent as a regular "walk in" at 8:00am appointments frequently. "Hiiiiiiii, Bent-leyyyyyyy." Thank you to the FFF volunteers who made Bentley feel special every. single. day.
