Fern

Acquired from: San Bernardino City Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 12
Date of Rescue: May 8th, 2018
Date of Passing: November 4th, 2019
Family: Sarah Owings & Eric Brandle
Fans: Roxy Murray, Elaine Byrnes
Tribute: On November 4th we fulfilled our promise to Fern.

Sometimes to say "we" seems inappropriate when it was the family who loved deeply and are mourning. At the same time, when we have rescued, vetted, and entrusted a Frosted Face with a family who gave her every last good day, there is nothing more to say in reflection than this was everything we could have ever wanted for her. Fern was cherished.

"It is with a broken heart that I let you know of sweet Fern's passing. She crossed the rainbow bridge Monday morning in her favorite spot in our home. Thank you to all who also loved her. She deserved more than this life gave her."

Grant

Acquired from: West Valley Shelter- LA
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: May 8th, 2018
Date of Passing: March 27, 2020
Family: Gary & Kelly Ravens
Fans: Beverly Mitchell
Tribute: On March 27th we fulfilled our promise to Grant.

Grant had diabetes that was managed by his new family, but in the end we discovered a bladder mass that caused him to be unable to urinate and we had to let him go.

"Grant,
Thank you for healing my wounded soul when I was at the darkest point in life. Thank you for being my rock after a day of sadness and tears. Everyone knew the best way to cheer me up was to bring you to me and remind me of the love I was blessed with. With just one simple hug or you looking into my eyes with your milky ones, I knew everything would be okay. Thank you for choosing me and loving me with every ounce you had to give.

Thank you for giving me purpose in life. From the moment you became mine and I became yours, you were my priority. I always made sure someone was home to keep an eye on you and that everyone knew how to appropriately administer your insulin, eye drops, meds, and even taught everyone to put your diaper on the right way so they didn’t make you look so dang silly anymore. Thank you for cuddling with me for countless hours while I decompressed and needed comfort. Thank you for letting me drag you everywhere with me without contempt. Thank you for being perfect.

You were so perfect in so many ways. You were resilient, clever, and brave. Always up for any activity or challenge I threw your way. You truly were a good boy and I hope you felt the love from me and everyone else who crossed your path. Your family mourns you and you will be forever loved and hold the most special place in my heart. I love you Buggy, you will never be forgotten💔
Goodbye baby, mom loves you."

Date of Passing: July 20th, 2022
Family:  Brian Szymanski & Debbie Dunivan
Fans: Raymond Heller, Tom Hudson

Tribute: On July 20th, Debbie and Brian fulfilled their promise to Punkin.

Debbie shared,

"We said goodbye to our bestest bully girl, Punkin.

We found out her cancer was back and unfortunately this time around, surgery was not an option. She had a large mass in her abdomen that has grown around her liver and spleen. We had no idea how much time we'd have left with her so we spoiled her a little extra every day and evaluated her quality of life as we went along.

Needless to say we are absolutely heartbroken. We loved this bulldog so very much and losing her leaves a huge hole in our hearts.

'My goal in life is to be as good of a person as my dog thinks I am.'

We'll miss you baby girl..."

Rowen

33990118_1938965269499347_4613150486311206912_o.jpg

Acquired from: Animal Friends of the Valleys
Age upon Rescue: 11
Date of Rescue: May 15th, 2018
Date of Passing: November 4th, 2018
Family: Bob & Sue King
Fans: Joni Duke, Sue King
Tribute: On Sunday, November 4th, we fulfilled our promise to 11 year old Rowen.

We rescued Rowen on July 17th, 2018 from Animal Friends of the Valleys. He had a mass on his mouth and he looked so bright, so we decided to remove the mass along with part of his mandible. It grew back in a flash and we knew very well what were up against- a short timeline of living and loving.

His mom shared, "It was going to be a two week Frosted Fling, but that all changed with that dreaded diagnosis that another tumor had appeared in Rowen’s mouth. He was now hospice, and we were asked if we wanted to keep him. Absolutely! We didn’t know how long he had, but we were going to love and spoil him.

He adapted quickly to our routine and with the rest of our pack. Rowen was a good boy, rarely barking, and always wanting to be near us. As time went on, the cancer spread to his lymph node, and we watched it grow week by week. It amazed us that he showed no signs of cancer impacting his life. He ate heartily – always the first in the kitchen for his meals. He would often just romp around me showing his love for life.

We had Rowen groomed, an excursion to the pet store, and a trip to Fiesta Island. He attended the FFF Halloween party and had a blast on the trick or treat trail as this boy loved his food.

He wasn’t one to lay with you and cuddle, but he would often come up and stand in front of us, waiting to be petted. As soon as I got up in the morning, he would jump up and follow me to the bathroom and wait for me as I got ready for work. He’d be at the door waiting when we got home. How our hearts ache as we go through the day missing those special moments with Rowen.

I had decided not long ago that I wanted to foster hospice dogs. Rowen was my first. Was it hard? The hard part was knowing that his time with us was short. Would I do it again? Absolutely. We were fortunate, Rowen only had one bad day in the four months he was with us. It was his last day. He wouldn’t eat, and I was in touch with the FFF team letting them know he had a slight temperature, but his gums were pink, he was mobile and alert. We decided to monitor and I’d take him in if he got any worse. I got up at midnight and 1:30am to check on him. He was the same. I managed to give him some CBD oil at 1:30am, but he resisted when I tried to syringe water into his mouth. He moved away, going to lay on the big pillow bed I had bought for him a few days before. I sat on the floor, talking to him softly, and just petting him until he relaxed and closed his eyes. At 6:00am I found that he had passed away. My regret, is that I wasn’t with him in his final moments.

Rowen was a gentle boy ,with sweet soulful eyes. He didn’t know he had cancer, and lived each day to the fullest with an amazing spirit, and inner strength that were wondrous to behold. Rest in paradise my RoRo until we meet again."

Thank you to Bob and Sue King for your courage to love a sweet boy who deserved your gentle touch and sweet family. Thank you to Sue King and Joni Duke (in memory of Carole Duke) for being Rowen's dedicated monthly sponsoring Fans.

Goose

32858334_1928854463843761_845638142428971008_n.jpg

Acquired from: Downey Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: May 18th, 2018
Date of Passing: November 15th, 2021
Family: Letha Morrison
Fans: Nanette & Rob Wood, Charla Hall, Debbie Christianson
Tribute: On November 15th, Letha fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Goose.

I have been waiting to tell this story for a very long time. Goose came to us with deformed feet which made everything challenging as he aged. His mom did therapy with him, wagoned him everywhere, and you would not believe the size of her biceps after the last year of carrying him around because it was just faster that way!

It was not the call I expected a little over a year ago to learn that disabled Goose had "charged" and bitten someone, and they had decided to sue everyone who knew Goose's name. Let's just say, that aside from the stress of a lawsuit that was hard to shake (but didn't end too terribly) - nothing will be more memorable than the commitment Letha demonstrated for Goose. She defended him, was accountable, and just kept on treading! What was first a learning lesson, became a lesson of love. It was a true love story in our book!

She shared,

"On Monday, Goose and I took our final roadtrip together when we headed to Frosted Faces Foundation to help him cross the rainbow bridge. We'd had an amazing 3 1/2 years together. But Saturday night he didn't even raise his head when I sat next to him with a ribeye steak so I knew it was time.

I saw Goose's post in May of 2018 just about 2 weeks after I lost FF Maverick. I was planning on waiting a couple of months to get another dog, but I kinda felt like I was destined to have him.

His deformed paws made him a slow mover but we got him a wagon and explored that way. The last year or so he was only able to walk a little bit- but I was blessed with the strength to be able to carry his 77 pounds. We called it Goosefit. In September, we upped his pain meds and he became almost completely immobile. But he still had that life in his eyes.

Goose and I roadtripped to Oregon twice and to Wisconsin 4 times and spent last winter there because I was teaching virtually. He loved the soft grass and even the snow- I think it was more comfortable for him to walk on. He was awesome in the car so these road trips were pretty special.

I was so happy to have this baby boy in my life. My housemate joked that Goose's face never lit up for him the way it did when I walked through the door after work. Maybe it was because my face lit too whenever I saw him. I miss him and still look for him, but I also know that we did right by each other and he's ok. "

Fozzie

Acquired from: Humane Society of Imperial County
Age upon Rescue: 14
Date of Rescue: May 19th, 2018
Date of Passing: April 10th, 2021
Family: Lee Movic & Erica Browning
Fans: Nick & Heidi Nguyen, Megan O'Brien
Tribute: On April 10th, Erica and Lee fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Fozzie.

They shared,

"Yesterday Lee and I said goodbye to our little Nugget, Fozzie. He was with us for 2 years and 10 months (to the day!) but will live on forever in our hearts.

When we first saw him at Frosted Faces we knew we had to take him home because he just looked so pathetic: skin and bones with the skin part being half covered in an infection and missing patches of hair. He was deaf and the end of his tail was bent at 90 degrees from who knows what. He and Simcoe did fine until we got home and then Sim decided to be territorial. We thought we might have to return the little guy for a while there but we stuck it out and they became...friendly. Never quite friends but they had their moments. I did find Simcoe looking around in Fozzie’s usual spots today after I played a video where he could hear him so maybe they got along better than they let on.

Fozzie surprised us with his rebound once he put on a couple pounds and got an endless supply of head scratches. He would even break out in a gallop to chase Sim on occasion. He had the cutest little bouncy-eared trot on walks and unusual sleeping positions. He enjoyed carrying around and burying his “stuffy” he received from a Frosted Faces fan of his as well as our socks. He was never particularly cuddly but loved having us nearby and never turned down an ear scratch. He had the softest ears imaginable. He enjoyed naps in the sun and always loved eating.

The last 8 months or so he declined in pretty subtle ways that saw an ever increasing medication regimen and ever decreasing amount he could do on his own. In the end we would have to hold him in our lap to eat, carry him down stairs, steady him as he drank, and get up multiple times a night when he couldn’t stand up from laying down on his own. We are lucky that this happened while we were both mainly working from home so he could get all this extra attention- it was the #1 thing I am most grateful to the pandemic for. In the end, he was just so tired and the medication was just not keeping up with his pain anymore. It was his time.

He taught us what it meant to care for a being at the end of their life, the endless amount of patience this requires, and that we were capable of dealing with a lot more than we thought we were. Even though we knew letting him go was the best thing for him, it was not easy. We will love and miss him always and are eternally grateful for the time we got to spend with him. We knew adopting a senior meant a limited amount of time but man do they leave a big hole when they go.

Thank you to everyone who helped him and us out, Frosted Faces for rescuing him and providing us with so much guidance, his fans and supporters through FF who sent him presents and cheered him on, and family and friends who took care of him when we were on vacation or stuck at work late.

Sleep well my sweet boy. We love you "

Joey

Acquired from: Carson Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 16
Date of Rescue: May 22nd, 2018
Date of Passing: February 26th, 2019
Family: Lynda Berkhan
Fans: Janet Hermann, Lena Peters, Margaret Scaglione, Goodman Family
Tribute: On Tuesday, February 26th, we fulfilled our promise to 16 year old Joey.

His shelter video shattered hearts and we are privileged to have been able to pair him with an incredible mom.

"Joey was adorably cute and quite a people magnet. He stole the hearts of everyone we met. Most people assumed he was just a perky little puppy. Everywhere we went people approached us and asked questions about him and so Joey also became an ambassador for FFF!

Joey was an amazing little old guy full of spirit and moxie with a huge personality. He was feisty, spunky and quite independent even though he was blind, deaf and already weakened by kidney failure and horrible dental issues including rotten teeth and painful ulcers in his mouth. His absolute favorite thing was to eat which he did with gusto at every meal never leaving a morsel in his bowl. Sadly, his diet was restricted because of his failing kidneys. I know he would have been excited to enjoy a much wider variety of treats.

Joey was very smart, always curious and fiercely brave. He was distrustful and defensive when being handled by humans but he learned to trust me and expect nothing but love, affection, a comfy bed in every room and a full belly. He made me laugh nearly every day and reminded me of how important it is to live in the moment. I cried tears of joy the first time he kissed my cheek! I cried tears of anguish while helping him to cross the rainbow bridge.

Joey has left huge paw prints on my heart for such a little guy with tiny feet! He was an enormous gift in my life. I loved him immensely and treasured every day of the short time we had together. I will never forget him and love him always."

Cookie

Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: May 23rd, 2018
Date of Passing: June 6th, 2022
Family: Michael & Karen Hansen
Fan: Jennifer Nayer, Alana Lawler

Tribute: On June 6th, Mike and Karen fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Cookie.

They shared,

"Cookie Hansen, full name Cookbook Crockpot Hansen, laid down to rest for the final time yesterday. She was 14 years old, which is a ripe old age for a German Shepherd, so it was time. We hit the Lotto when we saw this sweet girl in the yard at Frosted Faces Foundation. We scheduled a home inspection the very next day, and the day after that we drove home with her head hanging out the back window, snoot held high, tail wagging like crazy.

We tallied up last night, and since Michael and I were married almost 31(!) years ago we have had 13 dogs. Of those 13, Cookie was probably the sweetest. She was definitely the lowest maintenance, “chillest” dog we’ve ever had. Cookie welcomed three additional Frosted Faces into our house over the four years we had her: Sweet Juno the chatty husky, sassy Lola who only liked Cookie and no one else “thankyouverymuch”, and most recently, big Max. She loved every person and every dog that she ever met. She very rarely barked, but when she did, she did it with the rasp of a dog that smoked two packs a day.

She has never been a snuggler or a kisser, but she did always want to be close to her people. She spent every day hanging out by me as I work from home. When I was out of town, she would relocate to Michael’s office here in our house and keeps him company all day. And every night she would head upstairs with us at bedtime, even in recent months when going upstairs became a struggle and she needed a helping hand to get up there.

I say she was never a kisser, but the very last thing she did was kiss me on the nose. Sleep well, sweet Cookbook."

Family: Tristan & Marsha Poh
Fan: Bee Pagarigan, Laurie Stringfellow, Rob & Holly Mitchell
Tribute: On January 23rd, Tristan and Marsha fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Fenwick.

"It's with a heavy heart, we wanted to let everyone know we said goodbye to Fenwick last night. Our gentle giant brought so much love to our lives in the two and a half years he was with us.

Fenwick had surgery in March to remove two abscesses near his prostate. While they didn't find anything cancerous at the time, they said often cancer can be associated with those growths.

More recently, he was having a lot of difficulty walking and our vet was treating him for a degenerative neurological disease. He was incredibly wobbly and was falling over hard every time he moved around. In the last week he was showing signs of stroke/seizures. It's always difficult to say goodbye, but we knew this was the right time. I worried so much that he'd injure himself as he fell, and I certainly didn't want him to be in pain.

Thank you again for all of your support during our time with Fenwick. We are so appreciative of the work Frosted Faces does uniting loving gray-faces with forever homes."

Date of Passing: July 7th, 2020
Family: Sheryl Boze
Fan: Angela Gunnett
Tribute: On July 7th we fulfilled our promise to Abby.

Abby was a constant companion for Sheryl who lives with Multiple Sclerosis. A few months back Abby hurt her leg and Sheryl maneuvered her girl in and out of the litter box, into bed with her at night, and directed her towards water. Even with rest and pain medication it became clear that she had done something serious to her back and she loss all mobility in her back end.

Her family shares,
"Abby crossed the Rainbow Bridge on Tuesday. She whimpered when I tried to help her and finally lost her bodily functions. She told me she was ready to go. Dr. Kristi Freeman came over and helped Abby cross peacefully without pain. She and I were a team…I miss her enormously. "

Tribute: On July 4th, Russell and Jen fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Ronnie.

They shared,

"It breaks our hearts to have to say goodbye to Ronnie. He was the sweetest boy and we loved him dearly. When we brought him home from Frosted Faces, we promised him we would give him the best home and care he deserved. He knew he was safe and loved from day one. We knew he was grateful, he showed us everyday with all the love he gave back. We will always cherish our five years with him. It wasn’t enough, but we will forever be grateful. We love you and miss you terribly Ron. You will remain forever in our hearts."

Petie

Acquired from: Final Wish Program
Age upon Rescue: 13
Date of Rescue: June 4th, 2018
Date of Passing: February 8th, 2019
Family: Moses Bell & Carrie Leverett
Fan: Beth Pratt
Tribute: On Friday, February 8th, we fulfilled our promise to 13 year old Petie.

We acquired Petie through our Final Wish Program when his mom became ill. If adoption photos tell the future, his sure did. It was memorably one of the happiest days.

Last month Petie began to struggle with his mobility and he slowly lost the function of his legs. When medication was not able to manage his discomfort, we turned to acupuncture to find him relief. We are so grateful to Dr. Cynthia Redfield of Vets to Pets Mobile Veterinary Service for making time for Petie so immediately. Her guess was that he was suffering from myelomalacia.

Just a week into treatment Petie's cornea ruptured in his eye. We were faced with the decision to enucleate his eye in hopes that he would also someday regain his mobility and would be able to be kept comfortable, or accept it as a grand reasonable sign from above that it was Petie's time. We did decide to let Petie go.

"It was extremely hard to say goodbye to this guy last Friday. We so miss his nighttime snoring, his random amped moments, and his old man attitude. Forever grateful that Frosted Faces Foundation gave us the opportunity to have him in our family."

Denver

Acquired from: Bonita Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: June 12th, 2018
Date of Passing: June 10th, 2019
Family: Darrin & Christy Guitreau
Fan: Tanya Nielsen, Christy Guitreau
Tribute: Denver had lived at Frosted Faces Foundation for 9 whole months, until one day his FFF monthly sponsoring Fan just decided, "Heck! I can be his mom!" She drove all the way from Denver, CO to escort him home. When a dog lives with us for so long it is bittersweet to see him go, but only to the most perfect family~

"We lost our boy at 4:00 pm Monday afternoon. He was brought to our vet last Wednesday for mobility issues and to do a senior panel. We left there happy with a new plan to improve his mobility in his back and hind legs, but his bloodwork showed that his HCT (among other values) was incredibly high. Denver had an appointment today for a further exam, xrays, and an ultrasound. His back and legs actually got worse, despite new medications, between Wednesday and Saturday. By Sunday, we could tell that something was really wrong as he was losing fundamental functionality in his back/legs, and couldn't walk easily and without discomfort. He needed to be carried outside. We called our vet and she gave us some suggestions to keep him comfortable until his appointment today, and that it was possible that he had inflammation due to something acute that might settle down with rest and medications. By yesterday morning, he was in extreme pain and it was clear that he had several things going on that we couldn't fix, and our hearts are broken... it saddens me beyond words that we couldn't fix him.

Seventeen years wouldn't have been enough time with Den, but our less than three months with him went by too fast. What I wouldn't give for just a few more pain-free days to spend with him. It was so incredible to see him come out of his shell a bit with four other senior dogs in the house. His favorite things were his toys, his bed/our bed/beds in general, new smells on our walk, love from Mom and Dad (I'll never forget the day he finally gave us very intentional kisses, what a thing to be deserving of!), yogurt, naps, and rides in his wagon.

I'm grateful for the hundreds of pictures and many videos that we have of him. I looked through them again for the umpteenth time this morning and I let my heart break all over again. We miss him terribly, but we're immensely grateful for everyone at FFF, and for Kelly and Andy that loved him before us and shared him with us so we could call him our boy... even for just a short while. Thank you all. With many, many tears... thank you."

Jones

Date of Rescue: June 17th, 2018
Date of Passing: January 5th, 2021
Family: Kim Monaghan
Fan: Porter & Toby, Heather Osswald, Karen Billington, Marnee Carpenter & Nic Harvard
Tribute: On January 5th, Frosted Face Jones passed away.

Jones was not an easy dog and it took us a few times to find the perfect match. He had anxiety that could lead to destruction, was gigantic and strong, he had a high prey drive, and was pretty clumsy!

He was very lucky to find Kim. Kim is a strong, committed, independent person who was going to give Jones nothing but the best. She invested thousands in training, she got him a fancy dental surgery and through an episode of bloat, and most recently just repaired a torn ACL.

When Jones boarded at FFF, he had very specific, caring instructions about his feeding regimen! Kim knew that part of managing Jones was keeping him well-exercised and stimulated. She is an avid hiker and took him on good, long structured walks every day. A few months ago when she needed to move to Texas, of course Jones was going with her.

Unfortunately, during a walk on January 5th, Jones pulled so hard during a walk that his collar snapped. He ran into oncoming traffic and was struck. The driver of the vehicle stopped to help and stayed with him while Kim ran home to get her car. She rushed Jones to the ER, but there was just too much damage and fluid in his lungs. We wish we could turn back time to bring Jones back to Kim, and for us all just to know he is still out there in the world being happy and well loved.

Kim shared,

"I’m devastated. My house is so empty without his bigger than life personality. I can’t believe he’s not here anymore. He was such an incredible dog and I’m so blessed to have had the time I did with him."

Please send Kim so much love to help heal her heart.

Date of Passing: July 25th, 2021
Family: Kent and Barbara Mueller
Fan: Sarah Stous
Tribute: On July 25th, Kent and Barbara fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Jesse after a battle with congestive heart failure.

Barbara shares,

"You know Jesse was a stray wandering the streets of LA before he was fortunate enough to be saved by FF & was not a happy, trusting pet when we adopted him. He growled a lot, tried to bite & shied away whenever we would try to pet or touch him. Despite these reactions, he bonded with Kent, his new dad. He also took some comfort from being with his sister, Holly, our other dog. He tolerated me because I fed him. We could see he needed a lot of love & attention.

Soon, day by day he learned to accept the love. He evolved into the kindest, most obedient, loving, precious little boy. He happily sniffed & greeted all the dogs he met & welcomed attention from our family, friends & strangers alike. He still growled at anyone who tried to trim his nails, but tail wagging was his response to most everything else. Jesse was such an integral part of our family & we knew the love was mutual. He was a trooper till the end, but when the vet told us he was suffering, we knew it was time to not be selfish and let him go.

We miss him so much it hurts, but the memories we have with him are a blessing. Thank you Frosted Faces for saving Jesse for us."

"I’m heartbroken. I’m also mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausted. This past week was awful. Amidst the chaos of what’s going on in the world, I also lost my beloved pet yesterday, Poli, on May 31st. She was sick all week, and we found out she had a mass on her liver Thursday. The goal was to get her back to doing doggie things as long as possible. Well that didn’t quite work out as planned. That mass pressed up against her diaphragm and made it hard for her to breathe. Her heart was also having a hard time pumping blood and she was in a lot of pain. My heart hurts. I love you Poli and thank you for being a part of my life. I will miss you forever."

She was diagnosed with a mass in the back of her throat and it had metastasized to her chest. Because she was still eating and had vigor for life, we decided to treat palliatively and place her.

Our first and last call was to Sam and Kendra. "Yes People," you know the very special type. They live a pretty dog-centered fun life, they're rational, and forgiving of extra responsibility. We knew they'd take good care of our girl, but they exceeded expectations.

Maybelline's feet touched the sand and ocean most days of the week, she ate countless yummy foods at home and at restaurants, she slept on the biggest beds, and even went to a movie! We know the mouth mass caused her to drool a lot of slime, and you can see in photos they did a great job keeping her clean to give her dignity.

"We said goodbye to Maybelline. I’m still a little in shock because it all went so quickly...I had noticed she was losing weight and eating less and less but thought she was just having a bad week. When I left for work Friday morning, she grabbed a bone from my hand with gusto. When I came home that evening, I was having a hard time even getting her to take fresh cut salami from me.

We went to the beach yesterday morning hoping it would perk her spirits. When we got home, she seemed tired so I let her sleep. Around midnight, she was crying in her sleep so I helped her up and she headed to the back door (with assistance) and plopped down in a bed we have on our yard patio. I gave her some pain meds and fell asleep on a lounge chair next to her.

When I woke up around 7 AM, she was struggling to breathe and made it very clear it was time to go. I had planned to take her to Long Beach with me next week for a work trip - I didn’t even think she wouldn’t be with us long enough to go. I so appreciate the almost two months I had with her and this organization for letting me post way more than the requested 2 or so photo updates a month.

It’s so hard processing timelines in these situations because you always wonder if you had done something a little differently, would things have been different, would you have gotten more time. I’m not sure .... hug your babies, often and always 😌"

Thank you to Sam and Kendra Ramada for the incredible love and attention you gave to Maybelline. Thank you to Patricia Gonzalez-Powell and Beth Ruch for being her dedicated monthly sponsoring Fans.

Dempsey

Acquired from: Riverside Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 8
Date of Rescue: June 27th, 2018
Date of Passing: March 13th, 2019
Family: Rand & Jo Reed
Fan: Stacy LaFrance
Tribute: On Wednesday, March 13th, we fulfilled our promise to 8 year old Dempsey.

Dempsey was scheduled for euthanasia at Riverside Shelter because he had a large mass on his chest. Heck, we thought we could lop it off and write him a fairy tale. Not only was Dempsey dog selective making it hard to find him a family, after we removed his chest mass we found a mass in his mouth. We operated again with the warning that we could only debulk it for comfort. That surgery was in October and man did his mass grow back quickly. His fate had been determined.

While we expected his mouth mass to grow, what we didn't expect for Dempsey was to find him a family. Time tested, patient, loving Rand and Jo Reed came out of nowhere with their well balanced pack and offered to give Dempsey a chance.

"Dempsey's visit went well yesterday for the most part. We went to Midland and waited for the 'back entrance' Rand, Demps, and I walked around the parking lot. Rand says 'he's walking fine let's go home.' I was so trying to re-justify this visit with the same thought 'he's walking,' but have come to the painful realization I might have waited 2 weeks too long. Why? Because that's about the time he started growling at me - and skipping his mid day snack, but still eating breakfast and dinner. Then this week is when he went to one meal a day and 2 of those days he declined meals.

Anyway when they came to get us he didn't want to go in the door and growled at me and turned around. He walked about 10 feet then decided to lay in the sun. I told them beforehand no restraints or muzzles or anything. Vet came out and said he would give him a shot to relax him. He did and Rand and I sat with Demps in the sun until they brought the gurney out. We walked with him in and to the room. There was soft music and a waterfall noise on. He was alert but sleepy. We loved on him while they put the IV in and then the sedation shot. We said we were ready and they injected him with the final shot. They waited till his heart stopped and said we might see some twitches and all (been there).

They left us alone and I'm talking to Demps and kissing his face and all of a sudden his head rises about 1/2 inch and a gasp comes out. Rand normally expressionless face was hysterical to say the least. It happened 2 more times and I called the tech in. She said it was air in the lungs and rechecked the heart and assured us he was gone. Looking at my face she called the vet in to recheck. Demps did it another 2 times and let us know about agonal breathing. His heart was not beating, but he was gone. We stayed a little bit more and he didn't do it again. I will bring him home in a week or so.

I miss him - his slow walking - his growling/mumbling at me for attention. Most of all I miss him looking for me whenever I walked out of the room - or out of his sight. Sadie and I slept downstairs one more time last night with Dempsey's bed in place. He was part of the magnificent 6 dogs here (2 of which are granddoggies ) who accepted him and loved him as he did them. No doubt Sadie was his Bestie!!!

Thank you Kelly for trusting me with Demps. I gave him tons of love."

It is obvious how easy it was to fall in love with Dempsey and then how hard it was to watch him decline as his body failed him. These decisions are never easy and always made with love. We are so grateful for Rand and Jo extending themselves for Dempsey and making him their own.

Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: June 29th, 2018
Date of Passing: November 5th, 2018
Family: Jim Ito & Melanie Granfors
Fans: Charlene Buechner, Jessica Schlueter
Tribute: On November 5th, we fulfilled our promise to 10 year old Buttercup.

We rescued Buttercup on June 29th, 2018 from Redlands Shelter. She had a mass on her heart that was growing quickly, but still seemed bright enough to enjoy family.

Her mom writes, "It’s such a struggle to find words that fully convey the grief we endure after the loss of our pets. These two pics are worth a thousand words about the emptiness we’re experiencing.

Our sweet, spunky, yet star-crossed little girl will never be forgotten.

I say star-crossed because we fell in love with her at first sight, accepting the ill-fated reality that we wouldn’t have her for long. A tumor in her heart! But bless that little heart, she had no idea. She was never sickly or slowed by it. There is solace in that.

The day simply came —as we knew it would— where she couldn’t compensate any more and we are so grateful we could quickly give her the gift of peace and no pain or suffering.

For over 4 months she showed her love and loyalty by keeping me company from dawn till dusk... and all night long as well. She slept on a special spot right next to my pillow.

We spent every morning in the adirondacks together... a couple of old ladies watching the birds and warming up in the sun.

That empty chair. Our aching hearts. But there are more Frosted Faces to cherish and protect... which we’ll do in honor of our darling Buttercup."

Thank you to Jim Ito and Melanie Granfors for the sunshine and soft pillows. Thank you to Charlene Buechner and Jessica Schlueter for being Buttercup's dedicated monthly sponsoring Fans.

Family: Jason & Maeleen Cardoni
Fans: Caryn Burgess, Jan Dally in memory of Reno
Tribute: On Friday, October 11th, we fulfilled our promise to Sheldon.

Sheldon's mom noticed that his eyes had changed focus and brought him to San Diego Bay Animal Hospital for an exam. Dr. Traversi noted that Sheldon's gums were pale so we did x-rays to show that he had pleural effusion and then also fluid in his abdomen, which indicated a grave prognosis. Devastatingly, his mom had to let him go.

He lived a life of BarkBoxes, table scraps, and walks around the neighborhood. All the good things a nice family has to offer a domesticated dog, and the peace of which shelter dogs dream.

His mom shares,

"It’s with a sad heart and a lot of tears that today, Sheldon crossed the rainbow 🌈 bridge. My boy will be forever missed. I will share more once I am able to collect my thoughts. Sheldon, I love you so much."

As I have said before, she was a regal woman. I learned from her strength, tenacity and the trust we developed. I loved her very much and miss her.

Even at the end, she would come in my walk in closet while dressing for patting and kisses.

Everyone, thank you for your support and the honor of being part of Peppa's life."

His family shares,
"I just wanted to say from the bottom of my heart, thank you all so very much for everything you do for these animals and for the people who you trust with them. Thank you for the compassion you show not only these animal, but also for the scared families you trust to care for them when they don’t know what to do.

Scooter has meant so much more to us than we could have ever hoped. Frosted Faces took in a dog covered in dirt and dried bird poop, and washed away his past to help this beautiful animal shine. Scooters fur and confidence came back new and more beautiful than we could have imagined. He was the perfect puzzle piece to complete our family and that makes the loss so much harder.

Dr. Hoard allowed me to sit on their patio and hold him while they administered the drugs. He didn’t seem afraid but instead comfortable to be in the arms of someone who loved him more than he could ever know. Saying goodbye was hard.

Thank you for looking past the dirt and seeing that he was meant to complete someone’s family. Thank you for letting us be that family."

Tribute: On August 8th, we fulfilled our promise to Neecey.

Her mom shares, "I have been trying for days to bring myself to write this post, and finally realized that no matter what, I’m going to break down again, talking about my sweet FF Neecey.

Almost two years ago (Sept 2018) I adopted this precious girl, and what joy she brought! Neecey came with limitations, blindness, deafness, and advanced heart failure. It didn’t make one bit of difference. She may not have had travels or great adventures, but she was loved every single minute of every day, and she knew it. Then, just this past May, another cruel blow. Mast cell carcinoma, inoperable. We were told she might have weeks, maybe months.

I am so very thankful that she didn’t suffer pain or loss of mobility, but last Saturday morning, that she let me know it was time for her to leave. The details are poignant and private, but Neecey was held, hugged, kissed and deeply loved until she crossed the Rainbow Bridge.

My heart is broken. I am devastated. Neecey was beyond special. How can I get through this? The tears just keep coming, the lump in my throat is huge, and the raw, open wound that was my heart is just aching for her to be here again. Rest well, my dearest Neecey. You brought so much love to our home, and you will always, always, be remembered. 💔"

Tribute: On November 24th, Erin fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Maggie.

Erin shared,

"Four years ago I brought Maggie home and hoped she would make it three months until Christmas. I didn’t know what to expect adopting a senior, and one with something going on with her kidneys, I was sure our time was limited. We got our Christmas, plus three more.

She was Grandma Maggie to countless fosters, entertaining puppies, being a relaxed presence for the nervous dogs, and barking to let everyone know when the chaos needed to calm down.

Maggie loved her evening walks and would get excited when the leashes came out, right to the end. Our route got shorter over time, and took longer, but she loved to go get the neighborhood gossip. We took a few trips to the beach and Maggie enjoyed dipping her toes in the ocean.

Looking back on this year, Maggie had stopped playing with toys and slept a lot more. No one had a sweeter snore or sleeping face than Maggie. She’d ask for attention, scratches between her ears and cheek were her favorite. Maggie also loved to give kisses, tons of kisses, to anyone she met.

Maggie was perfect and I’m forever grateful to Frosted Faces for all they do. Frosted Faces gave Maggie’s original family piece of mind, knowing she would be okay, through their Final Wishes program. They gave me the best match ever, she wasn’t the dog I originally went to see but Andy, Jenna, and Kelly thought she might be a good fit. Throughout Maggie’s life the connection between other adopters offering support and community was remarkable. And at the end the support team was there as I tried to be sure I was making the right call. Thank you for giving us four great years together.

Rest easy my sweet girl, I love you."

Trike

Acquired from: Riverside Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 6
Date of Rescue: July18th, 2018
Date of Passing: July 20th, 2018
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Kendra Ramada
Tribute:  This doesn't happen very often and the confusion has not quite exited through my fingertips to write anything profound. We do what we always do. We do our best, we try to do what is right and in the animal's best interest, and today we are left heartsick.

Trike, formerly Bandit, entered Riverside Shelter as a stray on June 24th, 2018. He had a severe luxation in his front left elbow where amputation was recommended as treatment. It was swollen, awkward, and painful. (There is shelter video in the comments of how Trike struggled.) He struggled to walk or lay down and he was going to make a strong happy tripod - hence the name Trike.

Erin Tavaglione rushed to Riverside shelter to escort Trike on his freedom ride straight to San Diego Bay Animal Hospital on Tuesday, July 17th. His x-rays looked okay, other than his elbow, and his bloodwork showed elevated liver values. We did an ultrasound prior to surgery to make sure we weren't diving in on a bigger problem unnecessarily, and there were no abnormalities.

Trike got to come back to Frosted Faces Foundation to meet us and all the volunteers for two days. He got bathed and a nail trim by Kris ValverdeJen Stahel bought him a camo bow tie collar, and he snacked on chicken happily. He would roll over for belly rubs and offer kisses. Trike knew nothing of snarky chi behavior, he was gentle and grateful.

Rick Fishslayer loaded our kiddo up yesterday morning to head into San Diego for surgery, and we never suspected we would never see him again. We were going to "lop his leg off" and life would go on, one of the simple, great, silly things we say and can do for these guys. Three legs, no big deal- see ya tomorrow!

Trike made it through surgery, no complications, no significant blood loss, just a very standard procedure. He woke up bright-eyed as most do. This morning Dr. Traversi called to let us know our boy had passed away. We don't know how or why, Trike was even a youngin' for us at only 6 years old! Of course there's the assumption that he developed a blood clot or had an underlying disease that we did not identify.

Trike, we are sorry. We are accountable for anything that could have been done or not done to prevent this very final goodbye. You deserved to be pain free, you deserved to know family.

We owe a special thanks to Kendra Ramada for getting Trike on our radar, naming him, and registering to be his monthly sponsoring Fan. We owe you a little black and tan with Frosting in honor of your Trike.

Yes, we are still responsible for the expense of Trike's surgery that hovers at $800.00, which is fair. If you are moved to do so, please offer a donation in memory of Trike. Thank you.

We love you, Trike. All fours now, buddy.

Tribute: On January 21st, Marci and Rob fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Skippy.

They shared,

"This is so hard to write. Our little prince Skippy passed away in his sleep. The pain of missing him will never leave...

Skippy came to us with a 'skip' in his step and ready to be loved. The minute he got to our home he followed us everywhere - he loved the bathroom the most! He went on several camping trips, the beach, and parties - I could go on and on. Every party he was the center of attention with his cuteness.

His determination inspired us. He was with us for five great years. During that time he had an awful cough that would come and go. He would take meds that would help. He scared us to death when we took him to the emergency vet with pancreatitis!! When i brought him home it took a little bit to get his strength back. But he did. He had some heart problems and the vet gave him some meds that made him pee 10 times a day and seemed like all at night. My husband and I would take turns every night to take him out. He got off the meds and you could almost see his eyes say 'phew.' After that his hearing started to go. Then dementia, blindness and arthritis hit him pretty hard. All through this he was a champion!! He was such a happy, loveable and cute guy!!

How do your measure sadness for a fur baby who had our hearts? You can't. But we are so grateful we got to love and share our life with our little prince."

Tribute: On August 6th, we fulfilled our promise to Greta.

Greta was rescued with the beginning signs of Canine Cognitive Dysfunction. We didn't know her personality from her prior life so we had to get to know her and learn her true "normal." She was eating and recognized us so we placed her in a home with time tested Frosted Family, Ann, mom to the late Frosted Face Henry.

Greta had an outfit for every day, went on regular walks, and was accommodated with diapers and anti anxiety medication. Deciding when it is time for a dog with CCD is really really hard, almost the hardest end of life decision to be assigned. Ann worked with an animal communicator, helped Greta eat all the good foods, and adjusted medication and supplements to get her on a schedule that reflected quality.

We are really lucky to have compassionate moms like Ann commit to dogs like Greta and help them thrive. Just one more love story in the books thanks to an extraordinary person and a special senior dog.

Tribute: On May 26th, Steve and Marie fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Pixie.

They shared,

"On May 26th, approximately two months before Pixie’s 5th frostiversary, we said our final goodbyes to this beautiful little girl. I guess we were blessed to have had her with us for this long, & yet somehow it still doesn’t seem long enough. But her body told us it was time.

When Pixie first came into our lives, she had so much energy that nobody could believe she was 13 years old! Then 1 1/2 years ago she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, & we had no choice but to limit her activity.

Pixie enjoyed getting up on the back of the couch & looking out the window. When we got a new couch that was too tall for her to get up on, we installed a perch & arranged some furniture so she could look out the window again!

Her favorite toy was a stuffed squeaky ball! She loved running after it, & also rolling herself over it while she was on her back!

Pixie didn’t care much for snuggles & affection, but she always wanted to be near Mama. She followed me throughout the house, & became anxious when I left to run errands. We said that I was her emotional support human. When she wanted ear scratches though, she’d always go to Dad, because his were the very best! Although Pixie was generally aloof, she loved loving on Sissy/Sarah when she stopped by to visit!

We’re grateful to Frosted Faces for bringing little Miss Pixie into our lives, & to Dr Russell for his expertise in diagnosing & treating Pixie during this past year & a half.

After we left FFF, we came home & watched A DOG’S PURPOSE. What a fitting way to end that day. We love & miss you Pixie."

Date of Passing: February 19th, 2019
Family: Maria Munoz
Fans: Denise Mendonca
Tribute: On Tuesday, February 19th, we fulfilled our promise to 10 year old Bella.

Bella had been getting treated for thrombocytopenia since her rescue. She was on a few medications and she visited Veterinary Integrative Center weekly to have her platelets checked which fluctuated significantly. This week she passed out on a walk and her mom rushed her to the vet where her gums were pale and her hematocrit was 12%.

Poor Bella had just made an appointment for tarry stools and lack of appetite, so her mom knew something was going on. Dr. Han advised that she likely had a type of cancerous mass that is now bleeding and perhaps spawned the autoimmune disease she suffered from. Although we could have done further diagnostics, we understood that they likely would not have led us to a treatment plan since she was so sick and we were advised to let her go.

Her mom shared, "We had to say goodbye to our sweet Bella today. Her spirit was so strong but her little body just couldn't keep going. We will miss her."

It was a magical day when Maria offered to adopt both Bella and her bonded sister, Coco. We are terribly grateful they got to be together until the end. Bella loved food and good soft blanket. She was always quiet and we suspect that is because she didn't feel well for awhile. Bella was easy to love because she required tender care.

We also owe extra thanks to Maria for the many many trips to the vet during the work week to monitor Bella's needs. She went way above and beyond for our girl in such a short period of time.

Tribute: On Sunday, November 25th, we fulfilled our promise to 8 year old Kit. We rescued Kit from Bonita Shelter on July 30th, 2018 after she had been surrendered by her owners due because they said they were allergic to her.

"With a very heavy heart, we had to say good night to Kit last night. She was being her ever playful self yesterday morning when she laid down and started shaking. Mike and I checked to see if she was ok, thinking maybe she strained a leg or something simple but we noticed how her abdomen was swollen and she cried out in pain when we touched her tummy.

We took her to the vet where they found she had a tumor the size of a grapefruit in between her spleen and kidney that had burst and was bleeding internally. We are still in shock over what has happened.

We were so blessed and thankful for having her apart of our lives for the short time we had her. She was the sweetest, funniest and most playful baby who was a perfect fit for put family since the day we brought her home. We are missing her so very much."

I want to add how unfair this feels. We did our due diligence of labs and x-rays with no evidence of a mass less than 6 months ago. We even reverified this with a second vet after Kit's passing, and they agreed they saw nothing. When we first got the call that Kit had internal bleeding we were in "go mode." It's gotta be her spleen, let's get her under, get it out, and wake her up to keep on playing fetch. When we learned that the mass was not a splenic mass and how poorly Kit was doing, we were in utter shock. We never know how long we have with any of our animals and this is a reminder to hug yours very closely tonight.

Thank you to Michael Arena and Courtney Ferrick for choosing Kit and being her advocates just in time. Our hearts are with you. Thank you toHolly Ann Hoff for being Kit's dedicated monthly sponsoring Fan.

Tribute: On Friday, December 14th, we fulfilled our promise to Heidi Bear. We rescued Heidi from Bonita Shelter on July 30th, 2018.

We never treated her as a hospice dog because she didn't ask to be. She had ulcerated mammary masses with no metastasis so we removed them. When under anesthesia the vets found a mass in her throat, and we removed that too. Just three weeks ago she had an ear hematoma and we fixed that to make her comfortable. When she wasn't feeling well this last week, it had to be a simple bug. What they found was a gigantic splenic mass that had not been there four months previously. If we needed a sign to let Heidi rest, that was the one. Her family held her tightly for a few more days, but the mass was so large and likely pushing on her other organs causing her lethargy and not to eat, that we put her to sleep.

"We said goodbye to Heidi Bear this morning. She had been so weak the past week and we know it is time to let her go and let her rest. Heidi came to us as a hospice. We knew what we were going into. It could be just days or weeks or months with her. But we loved her anyways, gave her as much love as we could possibly give. And boy did she love us back. Even at the end, when she was too weak to lift her head, she still watched me with her adoring eyes whenever I was in the room with her.

Here’s a video of Heidi falling asleep on my chest as I sang to her last night (in the comments).

And thank you Santa Emily for the gifts we received yesterday. I am sorry Heidi didn’t get to enjoy the toys, but she LOVED the Bear 🐻 sweater! ❤️"

Tribute: n July 7th, Amanda fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Libby.

Amanda shared, "There aren’t any words in any language to properly convey how I feel about losing Libby, so I want to focus on all the time I had with her.

We were about to hit 3 years! She was so much more than my first senior, or my first little dog, or even my first girl dog. But, she was all of those things and so much more. How a little, barely 9lb mass of fur and attitude managed to win me over, I will never know. I am sure glad she did though. Being able to love and take care of Libby has been one of the greatest, hardest, and most rewarding things I have ever done (and I have raised three human children and horses).

I don’t remember who shared this quote with me, but it’s stuck with me: Having a dog will bless you with the happiest days of your life, and one of the hardest. Truer words have never been spoken, but Libby made it worth it. For now, FF Jack and non-FF Mayhem and I are going to spend time together and get used to our new routine, but there will be another senior in my life at some point."

Tribute: "I lost Petty on Monday. Taking him home back in November and feeling his heart pound so hard against my chest as I carried him to my car, I knew we would get to this day eventually. I just didn't expect that day to happen so soon. Petty and I enjoyed our last hike together on Sunday morning and snuggled watching TV Sunday night. He woke me up early Monday morning breathing rapidly and gulping for air and I took him to the vet thinking an oxygen chamber and some hearty doses of medication would make everything better. I went to the pet store and bought a special "welcome home" bully stick because I was so sure I'd be bringing him home. But this time, medicine couldn't fix what was broken. I went back to the vet office, held Petty, said goodbye, and he died in my arms.

I always joke that of all the dogs I've adopted and fostered, Maddie (my big girl) is the only one I chose, and that the rest were just foisted upon me. Maddie will have to share her "chosen one" title now because I absolutely and resolutely chose Petty. Back in August, 2018, FFF posted on Facebook about a tiny, puppy-faced dog who couldn't walk, and it was love at first sight. I shared Petty's post with every dog-lover I knew, declaring forever loyalty to my new dog crush, hoping somebody would want to take him home. When that didn't happen, I asked to Fling him, but Petty and my Fling became our forever. My only regret is that I didn't ask sooner, and the three months Petty spent at Frosted Faces could have been three extra months he and I had together. If there's any lesson to be learned here, it's that if you want to help and are able to help, do it now - life is short and tomorrow is not promised.

I often thought (and still think) about the family that left Petty behind, that had him for seven years and told the shelter they didn't want him anymore when he ended up there as a stray. I don't know what they did to him or how Petty, at only 8 years old, ended up with such a weak heart and atrophied, damaged legs. It's not a productive thing to dwell on because I can't change it, but it’s hard not to wonder.

What I will take with me is that we had the opportunity to give Petty the loving home he always deserved, and got to know and love him in all his tiny, feisty, loud, bark-y, demanding, sweet, playful glory. I am forever grateful for the 7 months that were ours - goodbye my sweet, sweet boy.

Including pictures here from this past weekend. It was action packed, with hikes and burritos and “wrestling” and couch snuggles ❤️"

Tribute: On December 29th, Sara fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Kenpo.

She shared,

"On December 29th 2022 our sweet boy Kenpo joined doggie heaven after a battle with cancer. It has been terribly hard without him...we miss his presence everyday.

Our journey the last few weeks was a rollercoaster of highs and severe lows. And when the frequency of Kenpo's bad days started increasing, we made the decision to let him cross over...but not before we were gifted with a great day. And we are so eternally grateful for that day.

Kenpo was the sweetest boy, and never met a person who wasn't his friend. He lived for FOOD, walks, and pets of all kinds, but was notoriously greedy for belly-rubs! He loved his couch, being snuggled, and resting his giant head in your lap. He was my shadow and companion, and I feel so grateful that I got to be his mommy.

You brightened up our lives Mr. Ken....we will miss you always sweet pea ❤️"

Jackie shared,

"2007-4/17/2022

Freedom is the greatest and hardest gift.

Miss May:

Experiencing life through your eyes changed me. You loved everything and everyone, even the people who said they hated dogs like you. You showed them that beyond those cropped ears, you were one of the gentlest souls in all the land. And you still even wanted to be friends with all the dogs that nipped at you. You managed to see the good in everyone. I promise that I’ll live life with the same enthusiasm and always try to see the good in everyone.

When I brought you home almost four years ago, I had no idea that you would become my heart dog, my soulmate. You showed me a love that I never knew existed. Nobody has ever made me laugh harder, and until today, cry harder.

You brought so much joy to my life and taught me so much, like the true meaning of forgiveness. Some humans will let you down, even those that you hold in the highest regard.

Forgive them so you can find peace in your heart and get on with your life.

Thank you for teaching me to handle adversity with grace and strength.

Thank you for being my sunshine on some of the darkest days.

Thank you for teaching me to just go with the flow of life and to not sweat the small stuff or even the big stuff…to just live in the moment and enjoy every second.

Thank you for being the most gracious and welcoming foster sister.

I’m grateful that your life didn’t end at a shelter and you left this life knowing that you were insanely loved. The only way that I know how to truly honor you and carry on your legacy is by helping another dog in need. Send me a soul to love.

You will always be with me. I know on the days that I’m struggling, you’ll come yell and headbutt me and tell me to get it together like you did when your dinner was late.

I can see you now; you’ve got a huge smile on your face while you parkour your heart out.

Although this is the hardest day of my life, my heart is full. I’ll see you soon. Until then, trot on and show them all how it’s done.

Love,

Mom

P.S. Look for Betty White. She has the good cookies."

Tribute: 12 year old Kimmy passed away late last night at Frosted Faces Foundation.

We rescued 12 year old Kimmy just last week on Thursday, August 9th. We knew she had severe congestive heart failure that had gone untreated. Our veterinary team felt that Kimmy deserved a chance at treatment and she began to improve after just one day. Her belly had been full of fluid, but it got smaller as she expelled fluid, her color became pink, her labored breathing calmed, and she was perky and participating in life.

Kimmy bed hopped in the FFF lobby where we could keep an eye on her and she recruited attention from volunteers. We made her boiled chicken for each meal and she loved it!

Everyone here at FFF is aged, many have chronic conditions, and all need stand-in mommies and daddies while they wait for approved adopters. It is not easy figuring out how to divide our time to make sure each Frosted Face feels special. We want them to be touched with gentle hands everyday and be genuinely engaged with by ourselves and/or volunteers. Over the last week we have taken Kimmy home with us, she notably watched Mulan with us one night entranced with the screen, and last night we had just taken her to On the Border with FFF volunteers where she sat on Andy's lap throughout dinner and ate off his plate. Her sudden decline was an alarming heartbreak.

We would like to thank all of the volunteers who show up weekly and love our Frosted Faces. Kimmy is an important reminder that not all Frosted Faces find families before passing, so the role of volunteers is all the more necessary and rewarding. In the same tune, Kimmy deserved a family and anyone could've sacrificed his/her time and heart for her. Please dig deep and have the conversation with your family about Fostering or Forever Fostering. We do cover medical expenses.

Tribute: On Tuesday, October 30th, we fulfilled our promise to 15 year old Milo.

We rescued Milo from Baldwin Park Shelter on August 20th, 2018 after he had been surrendered by his owners. A volunteer's plea for Milo's safe exit went viral when animal lovers everywhere saw confused Milo in a jail cell covered in feces.

Upon rescue we learned that Milo had a very large liver mass and he paced either from anxiety or pain. The first week we were confused as to whether we could give him more quality days. He paced relentlessly causing his toes to bleed and was inconsolable. We started him on a concoction of pain medication and supplements that proved to enhance his quality of life exponentially.

He was a "normal" dog who sought attention, enjoyed begging for food, and slept through the night. Nearly immediately we accepted that the best place for Milo was at Frosted Faces Foundation where we could provide him with round the clock care. The volunteers were Milo's family, making him special meals, changing his diapers, giving him baths, and taking him on outings.

He drooled down Jenna's leg until she sacrificed part of her sandwich for him and followed me into the "Littles' Room" to help me clean out their bowls while I cleaned kennels. This weekend a volunteer escorted him through the Trick or Treat Trail and he couldn't have possibly had more fun with all of the interactive food puzzles. Just this last month he showed us that he could run! He loved to chase Frosted Face Pixie around the yard like she was a squirrel. One of Milo's Fans, Ryan, drove all the way from Del Mar multiple times to take Milo to the park, eateries, Bates Nut Farm, and most notably, stand up paddle boarding with SUP Pups California.

When Milo showed some decline about a month ago we took him to College Animal Hospital where we learned that he had new metastasis of the cancer in his chest. Last night Milo's health worsened quickly. He was not acting like himself and while we were making decisions and contacting his FFF Family, he collapsed and appeared to be in the process of passing. We had no choice but to rush him to VCA Animal Medical Center of El Cajon on emergency. FFF Kennel Manager, Jenna, met Andy and I there and we all held Milo's tired body in our pajamas and sobbed over him as he slipped away.

We agree that after that first week, Milo had a steady wonderful existence at FFF among kindness and patience. He wanted to live, so we provided supportive care without too much fuss and a lot of accommodation, and he kept on smiling his sweet smile. He had gained weight and made himself at home. We are thankful Milo made the end of life decision easy for us because he would have been very hard to let go. Today there is an emptiness in our lobby crew, and Journey-girl is crying in Milo's absence.

Thank you to Christina Lewis, Ryan Malina, Matthew Linch, Lois & Jack-Jack Taylor, The Porto Pack, Angie Bartholomew, and Victoria Conway for being Milo's dedicated monthly sponsoring Fans.

Thank you to the volunteers of FFF who made memories with Milo and provided him with excellent loving care. <3

"Our beautiful perfect Ali Bear is now resting. We had to let her go last night. She had been sick on and off for awhile, but she’d always bounce back.

She’d stopped really eating too much the last few weeks. Then the last two weeks she wouldn’t get up without assistance and would only eat if hand fed. And yesterday she stopped being able to get up or move at all even with assistance.

We were not ready.

She made our house whole .

She was the happiest greatest pup in the world.

It still feels unreal that she’s even gone. She was my baby."

Tribute: On August 8th, Michael and Rebecca fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Starfire.

Rebecca shared,

"To my little Starfire. I still remember the exact moment I met you at Frosted Faces. You were wearing a pink sweater that made your head look tiny. You were boarding and I was told you were refusing to eat so I made sure to hand feed you that afternoon.

Months later when I read that your owner surrendered you at 16, my heart sank and I could not get you out of my head so I brought you home.

Everyone that knows me knows that all that I am are my dogs. I am not me without my Dusty and my Starfire and right now I feel like half my world is gone.

Starfire made a huge impact in my life.

She was such a unique and weird little dog, it was impossible not to love her. She was the perfect sister to Dusty and I will miss her giant eyes following me all over the house and her little grunts whenever she wanted something. I will miss holding her like a baby and rubbing my face on her soft cheeks/ears. I loved caring for her no matter how challenging it got at the end. In her last months, her favorite thing was when I would put her in the kitchen with me and started cooking, because she knew she was going to get allllll the handouts. And I'd also like to believe she liked listening to all my true crime podcasts as well! We had so many little adventures and perfect moments where I could not believe how lucky I was to have her and non FF dusty in my life. I felt so complete.

3 years with you were not enough. Thank you for being there for me and getting me through the toughest times in my life. I love you every day and forever my little star.

To anyone who reads this, please give your dogs a kiss from me today."

Tribute: On January 7th, Marisa fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Omar.

She shared,

"My sweet boy Omar has crossed the rainbow bridge. I found a pretty good sized lump in his neck on Christmas which turned out to be in his lymph node and was cancerous, within a week of taking him to Dr. Russell, the tumor had doubled in size and he declined pretty rapidly.

I had four wonderful years with my boy and out of those four years I got to spend three of them at home with him as I began working from home during COVID and we were both happiest being home - I am just this week having to go back into the office 3 days a week.

He was my shadow and followed me everywhere - from room to room, upstairs, bathroom, outside and especially the kitchen, where he knew he was getting a treat. I would try to sneak around the house without waking him just so he wouldn’t follow me for what would be just a few minutes but he always woke up to find me not where I was supposed to be and would start to pace the house, until I made it known where I was in the house, especially upstairs, by either clapping or hand gestures because he couldn’t hear and as soon as he saw me his tail would start to wag and he would get this look of relief. We didn’t go on a lot of adventures, as we were both happy to just be home, he truly was my spirit dog and he did get nervous if we did something out of routine, like car rides, which he didn’t really enjoy and I always got the feeling he thought he wasn’t coming back if I took him in the car. But we did go on quite a few trips to Ojai to visit my daughter and granddaughter and he always seem to have a good time once we got there - my daughter has 4 dogs so it was always quite the adventure. He wasn’t a big walker either, he was happy to get around the block and get home. He did early on love to chase balls and play with his stuffies, but the thing he loved most was head scratches! He would rub his head all over the couch, on his bed, and you, if he could get you to give him head scratches.

I can’t say Rocky and Omar were best friends, they were kind of indifferent to each other, and I think Omar liked Rocky more, Rocky being the typical chihuahua. At most they would lay together on the dog beds around the house and I think Rocky knew Omar was sick because he would lay with Omar in his bed every day that last week.

I loved my boy more than I thought I could in just four short years, but so grateful I got that many years with him, that’s a long time in frosted faces years. The house has been quiet, not hearing him pacing around looking for me and I miss him. The first few nights without him, I swore I could hear him walking around, it’s so strange when that happens.

Thank you to Frosted Faces, Dr. Russell and team, his monthly donors and of course Kelly and Andy. I love this rescue - they are always at the top of my list of who I’m going to give lots of money to when I win the lottery! But for now until I win the big money I will continue to help out as much as I can. I love you Omar, I hope you knew you were so loved these past years. Run free sweet boy, until I see you again."

Tribute:  Yesterday 12 year old Boomer was relinquished to Carson Shelter by his owner. He looked like he was in immediate need of medical attention as we watched video of him shaking on the shelter's cement floor. https://www.facebook.com/savingcarsonshelterdogs/videos/1861916007263299/

Mary Arkwright and Tere Molina rushed to his rescue on behalf of FFF this afternoon. The shelter had moved him into the medical building before our arrival, loaded him on a rolling cart, and helped lift him into the car on a soft blanket. His body was tired, but Mary described him as bright and aware of his change of environment.

Peace and security must have washed over him on his ride to San Diego. Just 30 minutes away from veterinary care he took his last breath with Mary's hand stroking his side letting him know it was okay to rest.

Shelter workers let us know that Boomer's owner called the shelter repeatedly today to ask if he was better yet and if she could come get him. Captain Care / Capitán Cuidado Intervention is an organization that sets up outside of Carson Shelter on weekends in an effort to help owners keep their pets. They do tireless, incredible work. Officers always have the information on hand and offer it upon relinquishment to families all week long. Somehow there was a disconnect. We wish Boomer's owners could have been with him to let him go. This was certainly a circumstance of a family's financial hardship preventing Boomer to get the care, and ultimately, the peace that he deserved.

Mary didn't know she was heading up to do her first freedom ride to be the last person to lovingly wrap her arms around someone else's dog. Volunteerism presents opportunities to make a difference, and Mary was the right person for today's selfless assignment. She is soft spoken, kind, and focused. If she could have driven faster, stopped sooner, held him longer- she would have. So many hugs to you, Mary.

Boomer, it was our honor to have offered you the comfort to leave this world in the presence of compassion.

Mary transported Boomer's body to VCA Animal Medical Center of El Cajon where they will handle his remains and return them to the care of Frosted Faces Foundation.

Remi

Acquired from: Redlands Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 12
Date of Rescue: September 6th, 2018
Date of Passing: May 13th, 2020
Family: Alison Breidenstein
Fan: Jeanne Wilder, Robin, Linda & Rick Knorr
Tribute: On May 13th we fulfilled our promise to Remi. He was Frosted Face #500, formerly known as Rummy 500. That was a very memorable day and Remi is a memorable dog!

"He was an old black dog with dementia. He didn’t wag his tail or jump up for pets, and he never rolled over on his back for belly rubs. That’s not who Remi was. Remi was quiet. Remi stuck to the familiar. Remi didn’t like change or surprises. He liked short walks around the block, and he hated riding in cars. Remi liked being at home, near his beds, near the action – but not a part of it. He was my silent observer. And I loved him dearly.

Our whole family loved Remi just the way he was.

He had the softest ears I’ve ever felt, and he loved to have his ears rubbed. He would come stand beside you on the couch and lay his head as close as he could without touching you, hoping for some pets. Those were my favorite moments with Remi. His beautiful frosted face and his soulful eyes made me weepy with love for him. Then he’d walk away when he’d had enough and went back to his bed, or more likely, back to pacing.

He didn’t answer to his name, but he had many. Remi. Remster. Remington Steele. Old man. And Tiger. He loved wearing zip-on fleece vests, and he seemed to perk up when we’d put a hat on him. We found out that he enjoyed taking showers, and toward the end of his life, as with so many of our frosted friends, he needed frequent baths. We called it the “rain room,” and he walked in with confidence.

I miss him so much. I hope he felt my love for him. I hope he knew how much he meant to me. It’s so hard to believe he’s gone. Remi lived life on his own terms, and that just made me love him more.

Rest in Peace, my darling old man. I love you!"
