Tribute: On August 23rd we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face La Guardia.
We rescued La Guardia from Riverside Shelter on August 20th after he had been picked up as a stray. He had been at the shelter since July 26th, but was scheduled to be euthanized for space on the day we rescued him. We only had him for 3 days at FFF... that's all he got toward a chance at a new life.
La Guardia's story is representative of much of the shelter crisis right now. Firstly, there is not enough room for all of the pets who are being abandoned by their families, or not kept contained and go unclaimed. There are not enough adopters for all of the unwanted pets who sit in our shelter system. With so many pets living in close quarters, disease spreads rampantly. We are seeing terrible respiratory outbreaks that are tough to quarantine and are not sensitive to common treatments anymore.
La Guardia came to us with pneumonia. We aggressively treated him, keeping him hospitalized at FFF on IV meds, getting nebulized and coupaged by volunteers. It was too late and La Guardia did not make it. This beautiful, well mannered, "adoptable" shepherd by most people's standards lost years of his life because he ended up unnecessarily in the overcrowded shelter system.
We are heartbroken for him, and will continue to fight the good fight with you for dogs like La Guardia.

Tribute: On October 1st, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Spuds Steinbeck.
Spuds was a stray to Bonita Shelter who went unclaimed. They reached out to us to exit him because he was in pretty poor condition. Shelby Smock had the honor of giving him his freedom ride and to FFF.
Spuds battled infection after infection from an abscessed undescended testicle, to pneumonia, and then he finally got reprieve to spend time with volunteers on the hikes and in the play yard. There was a day where he just suddenly wasn't doing right. Dr. Russell saw him right away and his WBC and RBC were tanking. We started treating for IMHA, sent out confirming tests- but everything pointed to cancer and that the end was near.
We are seeing sicker and sicker dogs left behind in the shelter system. It's heartbreaking. Some just need diagnostics and treatment, but so many have families who maybe don't recognize the end or don't have the means for euthanasia. If it feels like a lot of Frosted Faces are passing away, we feel that too and the burden is heavy. Thank you for reading these tributes we write to honor each of them. ❤

Tribute: On September 11th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Adams.
We rescued 12 year old Adams from San Bernardino City Shelter on September 9th along with a handful of other urgent dogs. He was a shell of what his notes relayed. He was adopted and returned for benign medical and behavioral issues, and in his intake photo he sparkled.
By the time Adams was safe in our care, he was very sick. He had pneumonia and a bad heart of which we treated him immediately. He was so so sweet and begged us to make him better. His little tail wagged despite his suffering.
On the morning of the 11th, the techs noticed that he was posturing oddly which escalated to respiratory distress. We got him injections and on oxygen, but time was not on our side.
We lost Adams, another tragic death as a result of having to be impounded in the overcrowded shelter system.

Tribute: On September 28th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Trumpet.
Trumpet entered OC Shelter as a paralyzed dog needing an immediate exit. Carmen and Maya Johnson rushed to the shelter to help get him to FFF. Dr. Oviedo saw Trumpet as soon as he arrived and it was clear he had suffered a terrible injury. His legs were stained from urinary incontinence and his fur was course and matted.
In our care the first day Trumpet had countless seizures, and after about a week we finally got the right concoction of medication where we felt like he had a shot. The paralysis was no big deal because that we could manage. We bought him drag bags and a wheelchair, where he proved to be a pro! His front end was so strong!
Volunteers took turns carrying him around in a sling, pushing him in a stroller, many learned how to express his bladder and put on a belly band. Trumpet stayed busy scooting around the kitchen and buddying up to hospitalized friend Big Max.
The last few days of Trumpet's life he changed neurologically. His mentation dulled and he began having more and more seizures. He could not get comfortable and it broke our hearts. He was on 4 anticonvulsants previously, so there was really not much more to do, and he made the terribly final decision fairly obvious.
We wish we would have known what happened to Trumpet that landed him at the shelter and in our care, but what we do know is he received EXCELLENT love and care from the FFF volunteers and vet staff. We are also glad we could give him a dignified death at Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego after hours, who is always so good to us.
Toot, toot, little Trumpet. We hope you're running all over heaven now.

Tribute: On October 10th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Ta-Da.
Ta-Da was brought into the shelter as an alleged stray, but as we got to know her, we have a hunch she was owned. Ta-Da showed severe CCD, pacing, circling, and constantly crying like she was going to explode.
Making the decision to let your pet go with CCD who is still eating, drinking, walking, and alert is very hard because it seems like they are doing all "normal" living things, but you know something is not right, and mentally they are suffering.
We gave Ta-Da time to adjust and treated her symptoms, but it was clear our only job as her "rescuers" and new family was to give her a dignified passing. All of the staff circled around her with their hands gently holding her down to earth, as her soul floated upward.
Fly high, sweet Ta-Da. We loved you.
