Thor
Acquired from: Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego
Age upon Rescue: 3
Date of Rescue: August 17, 2021
Date of Passing: October 15th, 2021
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: The Erhardt Family, Erin & Patty Hoye
Tribute: Today we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Thor.
3 year old Thor was brought to Animal Emergency Clinic of San Diego by his family when he suddenly could not use his back legs. Staff asked the family to surrender him when they requested he be euthanized. After a week of steroid therapy and antibiotics Thor was walking, albeit clumsily, and they called us to see if we could help with placement.
Volunteer Coordinator, Melanie, agreed to be his foster mom right away. After neuter and treatment of a terribly resistant UTI, Melanie noticed Thor seeming blind and concerningly lethargic. We ran new labs to see that all of his kidney values were elevated. Could it have been from the amikacin and maybe causing renal encephalopathy? We hooked him up on fluids at FFF under the care of Dr. Russell and started sending out tests from a fungal serology panel, 4dx, a fecal, toxoplasma titers, a free t4, and a neosproa IFA. We were perplexed how this young dog had become so neurologic when x-rays and labs were not guiding us.
We hauled him off to VSH to see a neurologist where they agreed that the disease seemed systemic and an MRI would likely not be telling or give us treatment option in Thor's state.
Thor was so young we just didn't want to give up on him in hopes of finding something treatable, but at the same time, he was presently suffering and how long would this go on for until we had our answer? When all of the tests came back negative, we re-ultrasounded Thor to find something big and horrible going on in his abdomen. It must've grown to be obvious over the last couple of weeks and we had to commit to letting Thor go.
One of our Kennel Managers is also a Veterinary Pathology Technician, and we needed answers. We made the decision to do a necropsy on Thor. She found that his kidney and pulmonary lymph nodes were infiltrated by masses, and there was a mass on his pituitary gland on his brain. We are sending samples out to pathologist for a final diagnosis.
We did everything we could have and this was just such a sad loss that was terribly unfair.
Melanie shared,
"We had discussed names. Thor never seemed to suit him. But we never really settled on one because we wanted to get to know him well. Adoption was in our plans as long as we could get him to the point that he could balance well on our wood floors.
He loved to talk to us. If he wasn't getting the attention that he wanted, he was very vocal about it. The deep bellows could be unnerving if you didn't know this dog. Thor was sweet as could be. I find myself repetitively telling Kelly that I have never met a more perfect dog. Well-mannered and loving. Even with hind-end weakness, he found a way to wiggle his top half onto the couch to snuggle with me. It baffles me that his family found him to be an inconvenience.
I really cannot put into words how heartbroken I am for this one. He was 3 years old. A baby. Thrown out by his family when he needed them. Perhaps he would have been better off having been euthanized that day with his family before his suffering really began. My hope, however, is that he knew that he was loved beyond measure even though we were not there to ease him over the bridge. He got to explore our big yard and snuggle to his heart's content. He got to eat all the junk food he wanted in the hopes that we could put some meat on his bones.
There is an ounce of relief in the final diagnosis because I was kicking myself that I could not fix him. I felt like I kept missing something or that somehow this was my fault.
This dog deserved the world. The sweetest dog I have ever known (and I do not say that flippantly). He was still so young. No boxer zoomies because he felt so awful. All my pictures are of him sleeping or for diagnostic purposes. I kept envisioning years with him. Seeing him run and swim and camp and have sleepovers with the kids. All the family moments giving him the love that he deserved. Thor didn't get that. His weeks with us ended in pain and darkness and that breaks my heart. What a cruel fate for the most good-natured baby.
Thor... we loved you more than my rambling can ever aptly express. We are so incredibly sorry that your body failed you. I hope that you felt that love in your time with us and that you can forgive us for missing the time you needed us the most. We love you, sweet boy, and we miss you terribly."

I knew it was coming with the pacing, but I didn’t expect it to be so soon. We had 7 months together & I wish I could have held onto him a little bit longer.

Tribute: On January 22nd, Christy fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Peggy.
She shared,
"Sadly, I am heartbroken to say #FFPeggy (lovingly Peggy Sue), passed away peacefully in my arms Sunday, October 22nd. Her body began to fail her and her health deteriorated by the day. Regretfully, I only had sixteen months with this precious soul. Not enough time to give all the kisses and pets I would have liked to give, I wanted so much to celebrate more Frostiversaries with her. But, I'm so blessed to have been her mommy.
It was love at first sight for me when I saw the photos her foster had posted; I knew I had to get to California and make her mine. She was the best co-pilot anyone could have as we drove from Ramona all the way home to Wisconsin. She never liked the snow or cold weather, always a California girl at heart. But, she loved me, and we made it work.
She followed me all over the house and when mobility became an issue she would grunt or bark if I hadn't already carried her to where I was, or if I wasn't in her sight. I truly loved taking care of my Peggy.
She was the sweetest girl. She loved her food, and treats; a true foodie! and she even tolerated her fur sister; Betty who is clearly already missing her.
Life is so empty without her, I'm completely devastated. I wish I could go back to the day we sat together on the Frosted Faces couch getting our photo taken. I will always cherish that special memory and every memory I've had with my sweet Peggy. Someone once said she was a “doll” and she absolutely was.
I told her as she passed on to the rainbow bridge that I will love her forever, and I absolutely will. But, truly, forever wouldn't be long enough to spend with my precious girl. I loved her soo much. I would like to thank Frosted Faces for allowing me to be her mommy. My life is so much greater because of it."
Sadie
Acquired from: San Gabriel Valley Humane Society
Age upon Rescue: 12
Date of Rescue: August 20, 2021
Date of Passing: September 8, 2021
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Laura Alvarez, Bev Hollis Photography
Tribute: On September 8th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Sadie.
Sadie was a stray to San Gabriel Valley Shelter where there is little foot traffic, so they emailed to see if we could help!
Mary Arkwright did her freedom ride down to FFF where she was very scared upon arrival, biting and thrashing. All of these new people in new places! What we didn't know was that she also was not feeling well. The next morning Sadie was a completely different dog, lethargic, drooly, consolable. We ran bloodwork and x-rays to find she was in very end stage renal failure and her sodium was sky high. We hospitalized her for four days at College Animal Hospital where she finally began eating again, getting feisty as the shelter had reported, and also her eyes were sparkling. We brought her home for a last hoorah!
She got strolled in the FFF hikes, she went to the winery to eat good foods, she helped Ramona water the plants at the community park, and she slept in bed with us at night. She leaked urine, but we accommodated her with a potty pad and wrapping her in a blanket!
Her decline came more quickly than we typically experience and after mere days she began to get drooly and lethargic again. There was no frantic rush to the vet, being squeezed in between appointments, or giving an familiar vet her history. Right at our home of FFF in our on-site clinic, Dr. Russell was able to release her from her failing body in the presence of her whole FFF family. This experience meant so much to all of us, and it further emphasized the great value of having a veterinarian at FFF.
We love you, Sadie-girl.

We were blessed to find her through Frosted Faces. We will miss our Rooster in the early mornings, and her sweet nose booping us to get up and greet the day. She loved the mornings. Happily we watched her heal and regain her health in a matter of a couple months. Although we only had her for a little over two years we enjoyed seeing her experience many things for the first time. She loved the beach, taking walks around our neighborhood and being with her papa while he worked from home. Thalia never met a doggie bed she didn’t like 😆 she had a bed in every room and she’d spend time in all of them. She brought so much joy to our lives and we will miss her adorable little face. Thank you frosted faces for making our time with her possible ❤️"

Tribute: On December 16th, Ramona and Tom fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Francie.
They shared,
"Our sweet, sweet Francie came into our lives September 2021 and left on Dec 16 2022. We did her freedom ride from SD Humane and later was brought home as a fling, but again we failed this process. She was my “pretty” female I had been missing as it had been 20 years since owning a female dog.
Francie starting having gastrointestinal issues in late April followed by many more episodes even being hospitalized at one point. It was never quite resolved although we tried the prescribed special low fat food, enzymes, probiotics etc. This coupled with her slow healing sores, ataxia causing declining mobility (although I would have carried her forever), it was our decision to release her from her failing body. During the past few months our girl never cried, whimpered or exhibited any pain she must have been experiencing. She actually rolled out of our trailer, got up, shook her head and carried on her way!
Francie went on 10 trips, including beach camping, road trip to Arizona, Sierra Nevada Mountains, Mt. Laguna x 2, Kernville, Pismo Beach, and local mountains. Sometimes in a backpack, other times in a stroller. She was a great traveler and in our motorhome she claimed the spot between the front seats for her very own. She enjoyed countless other winery trips, park and beach excursions, and tolerated her brothers Puddy and FF Robbie Bobbie, even allowing them to share her "bed".
My best memory is simple, sitting outside with her on my chest taking a nap in the warm sun only to wake up and see her big brown eyes gazing at me. Can you tell this girl was loved and cherished? Her final day started with pumpkin yogurt breakfast, followed by cuddles with Dad, a swing on the patio then a final stroller walk around the neighborhood.
Francie gave me a forever within the numbered days…
Thank you to Frosted Faces for our precious Francie and our FF friends who shared our adventures. Her big brown eyes, big ears and her big heart will be greatly missed. 'How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.'"

She shared,
"A Tribute to a Sweet Snarky Little Old White Chihuahua...
Chexie aka Chex Mix
On August 4, 2024,
Sweet Chexie left on his new adventure, the last couple of hours in my arms snuggled in his favorite Towel 'Blankie.' He quietly stopped breathing.
What is it with old white Chihuahuas and determined to do everything their way right to the end. 💕
Chexie joined our family, sight unseen, delivered by Kelly and Andy on a trip home.
Kelly said I should go "shopping." After several 'What abouts," I asked Kelly who she wanted to bring us. There were two old boys, Chex Mix and Snoopy who had not found a family for some time.
Chex Mix was snarky, bitey, didn't play, and had health issues.
Perfect Pupper!
I think Kelly thought after Maisie Mavee aka Mavis, our one eyed wonder, he would find his home!
Chexie made the trip across the country and landed straight into our hearts.
To paraphrase the song, Chexie did everything "His Way," and we let him. He was always interested in whatever was happening, joined in with Tucker on patrols around the yard, made sure that he remained on kitchen clean-up duty start to the very last possibility of a crumb coming his way.
Join us on the sofa, perhaps. Snuggles, maybe. Steal the entire bed and blankie, definitely.
Some days he would cuddle right up tight and others he would just get up and walk out of the room to his bed! Join us out on the patio, no thanks! Ignore the requests to come in when he was out there on his own, of course. He would make his way back inside at his own meandering pace. On car rides, he would sit and watch with what would best be described as curiosity. He didn't 'sit, stay, play, high five,' but he did agree to wait, and knew where treats could be found and how to obtain them. He was perfectly capable of learning, but couldn't be bothered.
I remember the first time Chexie and Tucker shared the same bed. It was one of those hold your breath moments. From them on, they were buddies, along the lines of Grumpy Old Men always making sure the world knew who was in charge, a little jump with every bark!
When BeBe joined the family, he begrudgingly shared his bed and watched her crazy play with almost bemused interest.
Over time, Chexie slowed down, sometimes was confused about where to go wee, found his comfort in his bed and blankie, but always up for treats. He would regularly check in on us, then head back to his bed. His favorite spot was right in the middle of the rooms, so he could see everything that was going on. We learned how to live in his world.
Chexie brought joy to our lives!
As we all do, I often thought about the journey Chexie had traveled before his rescue, how he made it to Frosted Faces and our home.
The perseverance never fails to amaze me and the "hope" these puppers hold in their soul astounds!
Sweet Snarky Little Old White Chihuahua...
Love always."

Big dogs or small dogs, Nico wanted in the mix. He was my constant companion. He’s been backpacking in the Sierra’s, paddle boarding and boating on the river, and first to the car when he saw me packing. He loved his bed and blankets. And, boy his “bark,” if that’s what you what to call it, could shutdown a bar room. He was loved by all who spent time with him. But most of all he was so loved by me."

They shared,
"Our little sassy girl Marnie gained her wings on March 14, 2024. She had gone on one last road trip the week prior to her passing and she had a blast. We came home that Monday from our trip and she was still ok. Tuesday she was a bit tired and does her usual coughing episodes which didn't concern us. But she didn't eat much that Tuesday and we figured it was all the food she had from the trip. Wednesday she was starting to cough a bit more. On Thursday her breathing was a bit rapid and still with the coughing. I made her comfortable before I left to work for a few hours and when I came home she had declined so quick. I called my husband and told him that Marnie was actively dying and he immediately messaged Kelly. Our options were to bring her to FF or an emergency vet but I didn't think she was going to last very long so we opted to let her pass here at home with us. I scooped her up and danced with her one last time and sang to her one last time. I told her she was my bestest girl and my pretty girl and that i was going to miss her so much. Her dad was on the phone talking to her the whole time as well. We both told Marnie that we loved her and we would be ok if she needed to rest. I held her tight and as she took her last breath, my tears poured onto her small, fragile body. I told her that I love her one last time. Marnie passed with me and all her siblings surrounding her.
Marnie was such a little character. She would run around while letting out little farts. It's why we called her Sparkle farts. She was so Majestic. She would make her presence known with her barks. She loved getting dressed up. Our favorite was her teddy bear costume. She always looked cozy in that sweater.
When she didn't agree with what you were doing, she would give you the side eye. It was the cutest look. She was the only dog to not want to sleep on our bed with the rest of the pack. She wanted her own room. So what Marnie wanted Marnie got. My closet became Marnie's bedroom and every night her routine was drink, pee on pee pad, then run into her room.
Marnie was my road dog. She went on many trips with us. She's been to Tahoe during the winter time and saw snow. She was indifferent towards the snow lol. We visited family in Utah and Vegas. We took her too ghost town where she wandered and explored. Her last trip was to fort bragg and the glass beach where she enjoyed the sunset. During that trip she visited San Francisco and San Jose as well. Lots of parks and dog friendly restaurants which she enjoyed.
Towards the end of last year, Marnie started declining and was sick more often that I'd like her to be. She had few respiratory episodes which she was given antibiotics by Dr R and Dr D two separate times. Her back legs were giving out more but she was still as happy as can be bouncing around when she could.
Her CCD was getting worse as she was pacing more and would stop and just stare around like she didn't know where she was. She would get stuck under a chair and would sit there and stare. She would also walk in circles that we thought were never ending until one of us would pick her up and hold her. I know she's in a better place now but I miss her sweet face so much. Run free babygirl, momma and daddy love you!
Thank you to Frosted Faces for giving us the opportunity to love our girl and give her the best retirement ever! To her fans, we thank you for your continued support that helped her these past 2 years that we had with her."

We had taken every precaution from labs, x-rays, to an echo. We did dental surgery where he had several teeth extracted and he seemed more comfortable. Sue King took Flanagan on a Fling, and as he lingered at FFF, then so did Joyce. Ultimately, Joyce came back for her boy deciding that he needed a family sooner than later and "If not you, then who?"
She came along just in time as he passed away just days after his adoption.
"Flanagan was such a sweet and good boy. I brought him home for a Thanksgiving Fling and couldn’t imagine why he hadn’t been adopted. I extended his Fling so I could take care of him when he had his dental. I hated to take him back to Frosted Faces (I’m one of those who wants to keep all the dogs!) but I was going out of town for Christmas and I hoped that being onsite would give him more exposure to be adopted. When I got back Flanagan was still at FFF so I went up and adopted him. We had a week together before he passed. Of course I went through the woulda, coulda, shouldas and only wish I could of given him a home longer. Run free sweet boy. Momma loves and misses you!
Here’s the picture I took the night before Flanagan passed. NonFF Dexter never shares a bed with any of the dogs but he laid down next to Flanagan."

"Pinky and I were only together for 8 months, but what a joy she was during that time. She embodied the word happiness!
She loved with her whole being, and she smiled—boy did she smile! Not only with her sweet face but also with her heart.
Pinky loved everyone she met. She especially loved my friends Kim, Nancy, and RJ, who also happen to live next door. She would wait at their front door for treats, just like her sister Walnut had taught her! It was so cute.
On a routine visit to my vet, our world cracked. Pinky was diagnosed with mid-stage degenerative myelopathy. I had never heard of it, so it took a moment for it to sink in after all my questions were answered, then I looked at her and said, "It's you and me, kid. I've got you all the way." We had a few good months, and we lived those to the fullest!
On August 8th, I said goodbye to my sweet girl. She was surrounded by love, and she had a belly full of treats—just how she liked it!
Pinky, I know you are with Walnut now, running, jumping, and playing with the angels."

We exited Jasmine from the shelter when her guardian could no longer care for her. We know she was loved and well tended to, as he put drops in her eyes four times a day and let her sleep on the couch.
Jasmine spent much of her time as a Frosted Face at FFF headquarters where she went on weekly hikes, wandered the lobby, snuggled with Frosted Face Wendy, and napped at wineries. What else could a dog want? A home of their own? Done!
Anne Case the Great came along and offered to be her foster mom. She knows how to pick 'em! The peace of a new home must have washed over her, because during the early morning hours of December 1st in Anne's bed, she discovered her passed away.
Thank you to everyone who loved Jasmine in the last days of her life.

"Hey Frosted Friends - Stevie’s mom here. Sadly, we lost our best girl this week. The cancer was just too much for her little body. I am hoping she enjoyed her life with us as much as we enjoyed ours with her. It was a joy to be able to have her as part of our family & she will be greatly missed. I wanted to share some of our favorite shots of her living her best life. 🐾❤️"

Tribute: On May 1st, Linda fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Paige.
She shared,
"I haven't had time to really get used to Edna being gone and now Paige is gone too.
Paige was my first Frosted Face. I had her for just over 2 years and she was my baby girl.
I don't even remember how I found FFF but as soon as I saw Paige's picture I fell in love with her. She had the littlest face and the brightest eyes. I still remember when her foster mom walked up with her to the adoption appointment.
She got along with our whole family, not even flinching when it came to all the dogs, cats, and even a crazy toddler. From the moment she came home, she found her place and fit right in. She was such a huge part of our family.
There are so many things I'm going to miss about my girl. The way she tucked her head under my chin and wrapped her paws around my arms when I carried her upstairs at night, the way she shared my pillow every night, the way she pranced instead of walked, the way she gave kisses, but mostly how she melted into my hand when I rubbed her little face. Toward the end it was hard for her to relax enough to sleep but rubbing her face always helped.
So last week I held her, kissed her, whispered how much I loved her and rubbed her face one last time while she went to sleep.
You'll always be my girl Paige. Rest well baby girl. We will all miss you. "

Tribute: Today we fulfilled our promise to Dingo.
When FFF volunteer, Rick, passed away last month, he entrusted us with the care of his senior dog Dingo who he had since he was a puppy. Dingo had heart disease, but most significantly, kidney disease.
As we sat with Rick on the couch in his final weeks, we watched him feed Dingo his k/d and Dingo unenthusiastically picked at it. When we finally took responsibility for Dingo, he still was not eating well and new lab values showed that he had developed a terrible UTI which we cultured, and also sky high kidney values at: SDMA 56, Creat 4.9, BUN 91 and Phos 11.4-- very different than labs two months ago!
We hoped that they were falsely elevated as a result of pyelonephritis, so we treated him with the appropriate antibiotics and hooked him up for fluid therapy. Although his infection cleared, his kidney values continued to increase to a creatinine of 5.9 and he had not eaten anything from rotisserie chicken to fast food hamburgers in over a week.
One thing that our new vet staff and kennel managers discussed recently, our "FFF family," was how we all needed to work together to make humane decisions for each senior regarding the end of life. No Frosted Face should be dying naturally in our care enduring extended suffering based on hope or with limited diagnostics. We all know what hope looks like and how hard it is to send an animal to heaven. We discussed having the courage to make the call based on clinical signs and real numbers. I feel like we have always done our best to make this meaningful final decision for each Frosted Face, but having vet staff on-site who see these Frosted Faces all week with diagnostics at our fingertips, who feel personally and professionally responsible for their care is really nice to lean on rather than being a client where the burden of THE decision is so heavy.
I say these things because it is such a struggle to let go of any animal, but it was especially tough to decide this is all we could do for Dingo when a "fulfilled promise" in our minds would be to place him with a family to help him thrive in honor of Rick. By some divine coincidence, Dingo passed just weeks after his dad today. For all of the Frosted Faces of ours that Rick held over the rainbow bridge, it was our honor to hold Dingo for Rick as he passed.
Last week, Rick's ashes were spread on our property and when Dingo's ashes return, he will lay with him forever.

She shared,
"Last night my Tofu crossed over the rainbow Bridge. He was everything to me and I always said we were eachothers emotional support dogs! I brought him to my office almost daily. I own a funeral home, and every time he came up to my grieving families, just a sweet look from him was seen as the purest form of comfort and love.
He had a huge heart, literally and emotionally. His heart failure was always making him cough and no meds every totally stopped it. But my strong boy rallied after every episode. I got 13 months with my tofu and I feel completely empty without him here. I know I will continue to foster and hospice these old doggos. But this really, really, has taken a toll on me.
I love you forever Tofu, you rescued me as much, if not more, than I rescued you. Rest in peace my love and try to play nice with the other doggies up there!!"

Tribute: On October 13th, Steve and Juliet fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Punky.
They shared,
"Punky was the sweetest, funniest, and most quirky dog we had ever met. We were so lucky to have her grace our lives for almost two years. Not long after adopting her in November 2021, we unfortunately learned that she had canine cognitive dysfunction. It was heartbreaking for us to see Punky's cognitive decline, which ultimately led us to make the hardest decision we have ever made and scheduled our last day with her. The date of the dreaded appointment just so happened to be on her second Frostiversary, October 13th.
Pizza, bacon, spam, hot dog, and Carl's Jr. filled her belly that last morning with us as she loved food and had a ravenous appetite until the end. I know she enjoyed and savored each and every bite, and we cherished those last moments we had with her while she was still on earth with us. We said goodbye to her from the comfort of our home, and she had the most peaceful passing we could have asked for.
She loved running in our big yard here in Washington State, rain or shine. She brought so many laughs on a daily basis from her booping our legs to let us know she was around, to us finding her buried in one of her many blankets and then managing to drag them somewhere in the house. She loved cuddling at night and always made sure to lean up against one or both of us. We miss our little Punky so much, but are relieved to know that she is finally at peace and no longer suffering from her ailments."

They shared,
"She was in heart failure and had kidney failure as well and having troubles with her tracheae and is getting closed off (she had a mass growing, unknown if cancer but due to her heart she couldn't have surgery). She was on meds, special diet and anything else we could do for her.
I was praying her heart would hold up after we adopted her for longer. She was so loved and lived the remainder of her days as the princess of the castle. She got all her hair back, when we adopted her in November, her amazing foster was able to get Buffy to grow her starting patch, which had grown all over!
She has been a hoot and my girls just loved her to death! We were hoping for more time, vets said anywhere from 1-3 months. She has been such a blessing! Her fur brother will miss her the most! They have been two peas in a pod! We just loved our Buffarina! ♥️"

"On Monday, late at night, my sweet boy Edgar, transitioned out of this world and into the next, over the Rainbow Bridge. His departure was sudden, unexpected, and is now so very hard to accept. 💔 Edgar was my little fluff-muffin, and I picked him up at least a dozen times a day to snuggle him. I’m missing that already. He never had a bad day, he was always happy, and would dance all around the kitchen at meal times. He was funny, quirky, and just loved life. The bedraggled little dog with a broken hip turned into the brightest spot of sunshine imaginable. I was so lucky. Run free and play, little man, until we meet again. Mommy loves you. 💜"
