Jasper

Acquired from: Baldwin Park Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 9
Date of Rescue: April 8, 2023
Date of Passing: June 22, 2023
Family: Kimberly Lohnas
Fans: Kathryn & Reggie, Holly and David Zierden

Tribute: Who knew they would have so much in common? Two pittie boys were surrendered to Baldwin Park Shelter months apart by different guardians. Both battled prostate cancer. Their love stories were written by two foster families, who stepped up when they needed them most, who had no idea they would ultimately be their final families.

This is Jasper's story.

On June 22nd, Kim fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Jasper.

Kim shared,

"It's so sad because he was the sweetest dog. He got along with everyone and was up for anything. Even though he was sick, he enjoyed his life up to the last day. At random times he would want to play with toys or beg for pets. He always loved getting in the car and was just as happy if we were just going to the park near my house or to the dog beach or back up to Frosted Faces. He was so gentle when taking treats and he was learning to love cuddling. He also loved steak! I miss kissing his big cheeks and watching him trot around the yard. He didn't always show it but he was so full of love. I feel lucky that I got to spend a couple of months with his sweet soul.

Thank you for giving me that opportunity by saving his life, and for taking such good care of him when he was on site. I love that he got to go paddleboarding and that you discovered that he liked to play with the hose water! I'm sure he was such a good lobbyist and I'm glad he got to make so many friends. I had a few people tell me that he changed their opinions of what pit bulls are like. He was very special.

Hugs to everyone who got to know him and who misses him dearly like I do ❤"

Minnie

Acquired from: Baldwin Park Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 14
Date of Rescue: April 8, 2023
Date of Passing: April 25, 2023
Family: Sally Funk
Fans: Donor in honor of Sky, Kleinfeld, Jenn Moran, Donor in memory of Delta, Debra, Miss Daphne Dashwood

Tribute: On April 25th, Sally fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Minnie.

Minnie suffered so many unfortunate fates in her last weeks of life. Minnie was attacked by a larger dog in her home, and instead of being rushed to the vet, her family brought her severely injured to the shelter. Minnie got the treatment she needed by the shelter vet, and sat in their hospital for 4 days while staff and volunteers pleaded for her rescue.

Unfortunately, she must have had an upper respiratory infection incubating from her stay at the shelter. We placed her with a loving family who just adored her, but days later she started to seem sick. X-rays showed that she had pneumonia, so we hospitalized her and aggressively treated the infection.

Her new mom came to visit her every day, and even the night before Minnie passed, Minnie was starting to get antsy, went for a walk with a bounce in her step, and ate her whole supper. We were all relieved it seemed she was out of the woods, but by Tuesday morning, Minnie was done fighting and took her last breath.

I wanted to use this final video in Minnie's tribute to show her new family tenderly loving her on better days. They shared, "I’m so sorry Minnie is gone but glad she’s not struggling anymore and was so loved at the end.

We sincerely thank all of you and Dr Russell for your unselfish and loving care for her and all those old doggies in your care. How poor Minnie made it 14 years with the shape she was in when you got her is a miracle. Strong girl. Gentle. Thank you."

Nigel

Acquired from: Devore Shelter
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: April 11, 2023
Date of Passing: June 14, 2023
Family: Jennifer & Mike Gilstrap
Fans: Donor in memory of Brody, Ruth Diab

Tribute: On June 14th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Nigel.

Nigel has seemed sick since the day we exited him from the shelter, but he fought so hard. In the end, he was battling pneumonia with sky high hepatic and pancreatic enzymes that we just could not resolve with weeks of hospitalization.

Nigel had a blip in time where he was well enough to go home, and Jen answered that prayer by taking Nigel on an extended Frosted Fling. He was so so innocent and we just wanted all good things for him. On the day Nigel declined terribly, we called Jen to be present and hold him. We all gathered around our fragile fighter and let him go.

Jen shared,

"I just wanted to thank all of you at Frosted Faces for the kindness and love you showed Nigel (and me) in his final moments. I loved that sweet boy so much and although his little body was fighting for the last few weeks, I knew he didn’t have much time. Having all of you surround him with your loving hands on him until the end, made it such a peaceful, loving transition. Although it wasn’t easy for me, it was for him and that is all that matters. He was loved briefly but oh so much.

Thank you for rescuing him from the shelter and trusting my family to love and care for him as much as all of you do. I’m so honored that you gave me the opportunity to foster him at our home and shower him with love and more kisses than he probably even wanted. He was the best boy, and I will love him always. My husband gave me a framed photo of him for Mother’s Day, which I had to move today so I can try and stop crying but it will back to remind me of my sweet boy/peanut/ Nigel.

Thank you for all that you do for the seniors. Once my heart heals a bit, I will be back for another Frosted Fling. 🙂"

Mochi

Acquired from: San Diego Humane Society
Age upon Rescue: 10
Date of Rescue: April 12, 2023
Date of Passing: January 24, 2024
Family: Amy Moffatt & Jeff Umphres
Fans: Jennifer Nayer, Katmar

Tribute: On January 24th, Amy and Jeff fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Mochi.

They shared,

"A couple years after we adopted our first Frosted Face, Panini, I started volunteering (January 2023) and then fostering (around Feb 2023). After our first foster was adopted, Kelly had started doing the Frosted Forget-me-nots, showcasing the dogs who had not been in a home in a while or who had mental or physical issues that made it more difficult for them to be at the facility and truly thrive, and I really wanted to help foster one of those dogs. Conrad, a little pomeranian mix with CCD, was on that list, so I went to pick him up for a fling in May 2023. When I showed up, he had an adoption appointment and went home with a family that day! Kelly said there was one other dog with CCD, Mee-Maw, so we chose her for our fling instead.

It was difficult at first as we’d never had a dog with CCD or any major issues really. Mee-Maw had frequent accidents with seemingly no cues, often waking us up in the middle of the night to potty or pace around the house. We both worked full time but were fortunate that we could work remotely so one of us was always home but it was still pretty tiring. After a rough week, I asked the FF community on Facebook for help, and they came back with SO many ideas. We got diapers, washable pee pads, lots of rags, I even got her a wagon so we could go on long walks to the park with Panini. After a few weeks I could see Mee-Maw had finally settled in. She slept through the night, knew where food and water were, and if she paced, I’d pick her up and she’d fall asleep in my arms. With Mee-Maw (later renamed Mochi) and her CCD, knowing she felt safe and loved maybe wasn’t as obvious as with dogs without CCD, like Panini. Panini runs up to us every time we come home, jumps into our laps, wags her tail, etc. With Mee-Maw / Mochi, the cues were smaller like leaning into your hand when you pet her head, falling asleep if you held her, or following you around the house. I picked up on those cues as we fostered her and felt like what if no one else ever sees that.

We had a trip planned for a friend’s wedding, so we had to bring her back to the facility after about a month, and I cried. I felt so awful leaving her I begged my husband, Jeff, to let me pick her back up when we got home, and he agreed. In June, we picked her up for an extended foster, and I eventually had a heart to heart with Kelly that I wanted to adopt Mee-Maw, but I felt guilty for possibly sacrificing our adventures with Panini and how much help I needed from Jeff. Kelly gave me smart advice, that not every dog enjoys adventures and it’s ok to leave them in a comfy bed at home. I talked to Jeff that night, and he said Mee-Maw could be my 40th birthday present, but I couldn’t wait so we made it official a little early in July 2023.

We renamed Mee-Maw as Mochi. We brought her to family and friends gatherings where she was loved on even more, she enjoyed wagon rides to the park, bike rides with Panini, beach days, and plenty of relaxing home time in the garden and in her cozy beds. She had some rough weeks but many more great weeks. I lost my job in November and decided to take a break for a couple months. During that time I mostly hung out with the pets, and I am so grateful every minute. I noticed in small ways Mochi was declining, with weakening back legs, circling more, not being able to find her water bowl or food as well, needing us to feed her, faster breathing, and eventually signs of heart failure, then kidney issues, then urgent care doing everything they could, with all of the bloodwork showing her heart and kidneys were saved, but she still wouldn’t eat, seemed like she couldn’t swallow, then had difficulty breathing and suddenly we had to make the decision to let her go. It was one of the most heartbreaking couple weeks of my life to not be able to help her. Looking back on our time with Mochi, Jeff said it best, everything we did for her was so intimate it brought us closer to her even though it wasn’t always obvious that she felt close to us. The doggy diapers, feeding her dinner with a spoon, giving her many pills, holding her in the middle of the night when she paced so she knew she was safe, holding her head in my hands as she’d lean in for more pets, pulling her in a wagon, carrying her in a pack, or letting her roam around the grass at our favorite park, trying to give the rest of our pets just as much attention and love so they don’t feel left out, I miss every minute of it. Mochi made us more patient, kind, empathetic, and present. I so wish we had more time with her, that her life with us could have been longer than her life before. But I’m forever grateful for any amount of time with her, and I hope she could feel that with the love and care we gave her. We miss you and love you so much Momo.

Thank you Dr. D, Dr. Russell, the vet techs, the kennel managers, Kelly, Andy, and all of the volunteers who loved and supported Mee-Maw / Mochi. You’re such an amazing group of people, and I’m so glad Mochi had you in her life."

Acquired from: OC Animal Care
Age upon Rescue: 11
Date of Rescue: April 13, 2023
Date of Passing: May 2, 2023
Family: Celeste Escalera
Fans: Alvarez Family, Carol Diaz-Zubieta

Tribute: On May 2nd, Cosette fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Klein.

Upon intake Klein was diagnosed with some pretty concerning blood values:

1. Severe neutrophilia r/o inflammatory vs infectious ( WBC 101K!)

2. Ehrlichia

3. Giardia

4. Mild hypoalbumenia r/o PLN vs PLE vs

5. Corneal edema

6. Cataracts

7. KCS reported

8. Tartar 2.5/4

9. Grade 4/6 murmur r/o CVD vs other

10. Cranium mass r/o benign vs malignant

On the evening of May 2nd Klein had many many seizures and before, on the way, and while hospitalized at VSH. He was unresponsive and after evaluating diagnostics, it was decided to let him go.

Celeste only signed up for be a 2 week Frosted Fling Foster, but somehow she ended up being his very special final family.

She shared,

"Hi everyone, it is with a heavy heart that I share Klein passed away a couple days ago. Although I was only with him for about a week, Klein won me over with his sweet and calm demeanor. It was difficult to see him go and I’m still a bit shaken up, but I’m very grateful for the cuddles we shared and am glad I could be there to hold his paw during his final moments.

Funny enough, I was actually supposed to be on a trip the past two weeks, and I only decided to fling when my trip was suddenly cancelled. I’m not sure what drew me to Klein in the littles yard but something did. Whatever it was, I’m glad we went home together that day.

I took this photo as soon as we got in the car (I was so excited to show my friends), and it’s my absolute favorite. He looks so happy and although I think that was mostly bc it was hot out and he was heavy breathing (😅), I’d like to think this was a glimpse into his more playful and silly personality.

I think we all know that caring for senior dogs can be challenging, especially when there are health issues involved, but even after this experience, it’s still so worth it. I’m thankful FFF brought me and Klein together. He will hold a very special place in my heart. I mean, who could resist that adorable purple bow tie? 💜"

They shared,

"To my dear sweet Johnny. We were blessed to love you for the past year and a half. You were the sweetest, little old man. If you could talk I’m sure your life story would be very interesting. You were blind but the second you heard my voice you came to greet me. You and I shared a special bond and I’m grateful for the time we had together, although it was short. You were a great snuggle buddy and such a fighter.

At the end your poor body was full of cancer and we had to say goodbye. Johnny, I will never forget you, you will hold a special place in my heart.

To Frosted Faces, what an incredible organization. The, compassion love and support you show to these senior dogs is amazing. You went above and beyond when I had to make the tough decision to put Johnny down. I adore your organization and the people who are apart of it.

I love dogs, as humans we are so lucky for their unconditional loyalty, love and support. "

"Scrolling through Facebook, Stella’s Beagley eyes stopped me in my tracks. I just had to meet her. It was clear after meeting her, all this sweet lady needed was a quiet place where she would be loved for the rest of her life. We didn’t set out to adopt a hospice dog but we don’t regret it for one second. She was so polite and quiet. She was only 10 but had such a gentle old soul. She would wander over to where you were sitting and lean into pets and kisses and stare into your eyes. We are so sad we only had her for a short time. Rest in peace sweet Stellers, you were a 💎."

Date of Passing: May 15, 2023
Family: Frosted Faces Family
Fans: Eve Stylianides

Tribute: On May 15th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Ray.

Ray had lived at San Gabriel Shelter where they amazingly gave him a great shot at life! He had neurological issues causing him to have an odd gait, and staff had to express his pee and poop. When we heard all that they were doing for him and how long he had been overlooked, we were eager to help!

Ray was chosen to go on a Frosted Fling right away with Vicky Gill who helped him decompress and did fun things going places in strollers and getting lunch breaks with Fling Mom. Ray was a frequent flyer in to see Dr. Russell because he wouldn't eat, seemed to melt to the floor when walking, and had terribly tarry stool. We did everything we could for him from labs, x-rays, multiple ultrasounds, and medications. He eventually lived with the Smíšeks for monitoring and love so we didn't miss anything. When he wouldn't eat anything, he decided to eat salad. It was too funny!

On night of the 14th he had a neurological event that caused him to start twisting to the side laterally with no proprioception and had labored breathing. His eyes were dulled and we could not help him. After all of the care he had received we decided to let him rest. All of the FFF kennel staff and vet staff hovered over him, while his head rested on a plush pink piggy pillow.

Tribute: On August 27th, Letha fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Graham.

She shared,

"I was getting ready to write Graham's Adoptiversary/Gotcha Day post, but along came a spider and changed it to writing my goodbye to Graham. 💜😪 💜🌈💜

The week before last I came home from work Thursday and he would not put any weight on one of his front legs and could barely walk so I stayed home the next day. I took him to the ER vet where they made him comfortable for the weekend so I could take him to Frosted Faces on Monday. His leg swelled considerably and the amazing FFF vet staff swooped in to figure out what was going on. They put him on IV fluids, antibiotics and pain meds and fixed up a kennel spot in the exam room. I dropped him off before work and picked him up after. He wasn't eating and couldn't stand at all. He ended up spending the night Wednesday and Thursday- thank you to Kelly and Andy for having Bison for a sleepover. I brought him McDonald's and he finally ate a little on Thursday. I thought maybe we had turned a corner.

When I went to get him Friday, Dr. Russell- after a bunch of research- thought that Graham had been bitten by a brown recluse spider which is highly venomous. He wanted to remove the necrotic top layer of skin before I brought him home so he sedated him. When he did that, he realized the damage was much worse than he thought. It was really bad and I imagine it must've been extremely painful. So, we made the decision that it was best to let Graham go. He had eaten a bowl of chicken that afternoon and had lifted his head as hello to me when I arrived and gave him love. I feel like there was some happiness for him in the end.

Graham was with me for almost a year. He was reserved and needed space on-site. When I first met him, I gave that to him and he got up off of his raised bed to come sit by me. When I brought him home, he was still reserved but I think he claimed me as his human; he was loved by me and he looked at me with love. He wasn't a cuddler and I never got a kiss or lick but he would put his paw on my leg. And if I sat down next to him, he would rest his nose on my thigh or behind my back.

He was my little shadow. We had a great last two months together. I'm a teacher so I had June and July to spend every day with him. We went on two or three daily strolls sitting down for breaks because of his arthritis. We spent a lot of time in the backyard where he loved to relax on the grass, on one of his outdoor beds or on the patio loveseat that he claimed his first night home. He would sometimes share the loveseat and other times bark at me to get off- luckily I had my own patio chairs nearby. 🤣 Anytime I got up to refill coffee or water or wine, he would give me a certain amount of time to get back and then come look for me. If he could see me, he was ok. But I have to admit- I felt pretty special and loved when my handsome boy came to find me if l was gone too long.

Graham was my fourth Frosted Face and I thought we'd have more time together. I guess it's why I spoil my boys so much. It's probably why anyone who adopts a senior dog spoils them. We just never know.

I am so grateful for the fact that FFF offers free veterinary care. But more importantly, I'm so very thankful for the love and care that the vet staff provided for Graham during his last days. I knew he was in the best hands and when he crossed the Rainbow Bridge, he was surrounded by love."

Tribute: Today we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Dakota.

Dakota was a stray in LA County and serving a stray hold at Carson Shelter. Staff saw that she was suffering and reached out to rescues to see if any of us would exit as Good Samaritans to provide medical care, acting as a foster on behalf of the shelter in case her owner came forward.

We showed you the photos of Dakota and her masses, sharing that it was not possible or reasonable to remove them. I know there were comments questioning whether we were being aggressive enough- was this all we could do? I felt the same way. It was not fair that we had gotten Dakota in such neglected condition where her cancer had progressed so largely, it left us with no options other than comfort care and management of infection.

There was one thing we COULD do and that was to place her with a family. Sarah messaged me the day we rescued Dakota asking if she could be her hospice family. Isn't that amazing? Dakota passed her cat test and just left yesterday to fulfill her bucket list.

Today, Dakota was lethargic, panting from pain, and her abdominal mass had ruptured in a few places. There was no question whether euthanasia today was an okay decision. It was, and likely the RIGHT decision. But, we all "rescue" because we want to fix these dogs, make them realize they are valued, and treat them well. Talking to Dr. Russell, with not a dry eye around the case, I shared my thoughts, "We haven't even done anything FOR her yet."

His response, "These are the hardest cases, I know what you mean. We are going to give her a dignified death."

Can you imagine adopting a dog one day and having to put her to sleep the next? That's what Sarah did and we are so grateful for her courage. She shared,

"She is such an amazing girl, and I am so glad I got to be her 'person,' even for such a short time. The moment I saw the first Facebook post about her, I knew that she was The One. And that felt true for every short minute I spent with her. No matter what else she endured, I hope she ended her life knowing that she was chosen, precious, loved and cherished. She was part of a family, even if only for a moment. I’m so grateful I got even a small glimmer of her light in my life."

Tribute: On November 29th, Rosie fuflilled her promise to Frosted Face Frances.

She shared,

"Little gentleman Francis Bocelli was my co-pilot in life for only six months, but I was so lucky to have him. He was super easy going, would let anyone pet him, and extremely brave for not having sight or much hearing. He’d just go along in his “Roomba” style walking boldly into whatever and then turn and go the other direction until the next obstacle!

He looked like a little croissant when he’d sleep, and I loved taking pics of his favorite position. 🥐 He got lots of sunshine, beach walks, cozy beds, car rides on my lap, and got to travel with me. I can’t tell you how many times I’d get asked what kind of dog he was- because he was so damn cute and well behaved! Mini Shibu Inu? Pom-Chi? Fox Chihuahua?

He must have been very loved by his previous owner, and I was honored to take care of him until he left this world too. Thank you Frosted Faces."

Tribute: On May 9th, Kathy fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Joey.

She shared,

"With a heavy heart I would like to share that my dog Joey (FF Joker) has passed from this world and onto the rainbow bridge. I only had Joey for 8 months and 8 days but what a beautiful adventure it was for both of us. I went to Frosted Faces on that day to look at 4 dogs I had picked out from the website of dogs available, Joey/Joker being my 4th pick.

My first dog picked was being adopted as I was walking up to FF, my second choice was more my kind of dog I was looking for but was on a walk when I wanted a second look, my third dog was tested with cats and failed, so that left Joker, who was willing and able to lead to my car and be whisk away.

We stopped at the Kahoots in Ramona on the way back to my house where he promptly pee all over their store. Joker did not pay that much attention to me, just found everything else exciting to sniff at. After we got home I renamed Joker to Joey. He didn't seem to care. The first 3 weeks were difficult for me in connecting with Joey. Joey was not a loving, cuddly dog who sat next to you on the couch or licked your face because he loved you. His needs were food, walks and car rides. He didn't even sleep all that much for a 14 year old dog.

I was a little lost in finding a routine that Joey and I could agree on. I admit that I even thought Joey was not the right dog for me and even considered taking him back to FF. But then I realized that Joey wasn't here for me but I was here for him. It wasn't about me, it was about Joey. Once I realized that everything changed. The first 3 months was setting a routine that worked for us both. We settled for 3 long walks a day, at a certain time of the day, and multiple short walks in-between. Two of those long walks included a car ride with it. I started to cook my own dog food that Joey loved and he would get his breakfast and dinner at a set time to work into our routine.

After 3 months we were a team and even though Joey still was not that cuddly dog, he was my dog and I was his person, and we both knew that. The next 3 months were absolute bliss for Joey and I. I knew what exactly Joey needed and I was happy to give it to him. In about 7 month of being with me and as I was picking him up to get into the car after one of our walks, he yipped at me as something hurt him in his stomach. From that day on I could not even touch his belly. I got a ramp so he could walk up into the car so our walks may have gotten slower but continued on. After a visit to FF vet services there was a large mass discovered in Joey's stomach area and it was growing. About 10 days after that Joey could no longer do the things he loved, eating his food, getting in the car and going for car rides and walking was becoming a difficult task.

I knew Joey was telling me it hurt him too much to go on. Joey joined my beloved FF Lucy in heaven on May 9th. Even though I had Joey for a relatively short time and it took a while for us to bond, I was much more heartbroken over his passing then I thought possible. I miss him so much. I miss our walks, our car rides, our life together. He may have been my fourth choice but we were meant to be together, with all our faults and quirks and I am so glad I hopefully gave him everything he wanted in those last 8 months.

He was my dog and I was his person. Rest in peace my buddy Joey."
