Tribute: On Christmas Day, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Foxie.

We tried our best for her. Foxie was surrendered with a terribly infected mass on her abdomen. I am sure her own family struggled with the decision at the point of surrender, where they knew she couldn't keep living with that mass on her, but she was so bright- how could they let her go?

Well we rescued her from the shelter and removed that mass. Michele Vogt had the honor of doing both her freedom ride and taking her to the vet for the big surgery. Every step of the way, Michele had Foxie's back, because she even offered to foster her through recovery.

Unfortunately, Foxie seemed like she was having a hard time breathing so she went to Animal Urgent Care of Escondido. They suspected aspiration pneumonia, so we hospitalized her for two days. A rad review showed that there was metastasis of her cancer to her lungs that was not evident originally. It wouldn't have mattered and we would have continued to treat the problem at hand, aspiration pneumonia, to buy her good days, but recheck x-rays were far worse two days later after treatment and oxygen. It didn't make sense. We did not want her to suffer through respiratory distress, so we were guided to the fair decision to let her go. Michele was again at Foxie's side.

She shared,

"Yesterday we said goodbye to sweet Foxie. I got a message from Kelly that her rads were much worse and she would go into respiratory distress and we didn’t want that to happen. I rushed to the hospital to be with her. Her last moments were peaceful. She looked in my eyes and I told her she was so loved and to go run free🐶🌈 Thank you Kelly Smíšek for entrusting me with her care. I know this was a tough case from the beginning. Thank you Kelly and Frosted Faces Foundation for giving her a chance. Thank you everyone for your love and support. I let her know my pups Tracy and Oliver and all her other FF siblings would be there to greet her!! Rest in peace sweet girl!! 🐶🌈💕😇"

Tribute: It was "last call for Tommy" at Upland Shelter. They had reached out to us earlier in the month, but we didn't have room. Something about the phrase "last call," seeming like, "Doesn't anybody want him?" struck a chord. He was found in a nice green harness, it was really too bad his family had not found him and couldn't be reached.

We sent volunteer Christine Leung to get our new boy on January 10th. 15 year old Tommy was very fragile and walked with a slow skip in his step. He was a ravenous eater and everyone's baby! He got held all the time and got to spend time at an Orange Theory community event.

Sometime last week Tommy suffered a neurological event that changed him. It wasn't vestibular disease, he seemed to have a forebrain issue where he was head pressing, getting stuck in corners, lacked coordination to walk, was inappropriately vocalizing, inconsolable, and stopped eating.

We did an ultrasound, and echo, we tried antibiotics and steroids, leaving no stone unturned. I think we could've crossed the bridge of an MRI, but likely would have reached the same conclusion. Euthanasia was the kindest option for Tommy, and like always, seemingly so unfair now that he was promised a family. At least he was offered the dignity of a peaceful passing. Thank you for helping us to give him all that we could in such a short time.

Tribute: On February 21st, Michele fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Mr. Brownie after battling end stage kidney failure.

Michele shared,

"I always look for Kelly’s post about dogs who have not been on flings or dogs that aren’t thriving and need a home. Mr Brownie was on this list. After a volunteer shift, I asked Alicia which dog needed a home the most and she said Mr Brownie. I was hesitant at first because he had a lot going on and when they said he needed fluids every 48 hours, I thought….I don’t think I can do that. Alicia and Bella reassured me and said I would be fine. Bella showed me how to administer fluids and I figured I would give it a shot.

When I met Mr Brownie, I fell in love. He was so cute and frail and I knew he needed extra attention. He enjoyed walks and had the cutest little trot!! He seemed to fit in with my pack with ease!! Once we got into a routine with meds and whatever he needed, it felt easy. Then one morning he started having seizures and my heart broke. I knew this wasn’t a good sign. He needed extra care and I didn’t mind, I would do anything for Mr Brownie. He stayed at Frosted Faces for a few days while they got his seizures under control.

As soon as he was well enough I brought him back home. The 21 days we had together were not long enough. He fought a good fight, but his frail little body just couldn’t hang on. Although it wasn’t official, I told him he was home. He was part of the family and would stay here. I miss his snuggles and falling asleep on my chest. I miss how he would flop on me in the middle of the night to let me know he had to go potty (he did not have any accidents). I miss holding up his little body so he could make sure to get that leg lift in when he pottied or when his legs would cross and he peed on his paw (I always had wipes ready for this and it would make me laugh). I made sure he felt loved in those 21 days!!

He was my little man and I miss him so much!! Run free Mr Brownie!! Thank you to the Vet Team for your kindness and all the support you provided Mr Brownie. Thank you Kelly and Frosted Faces for saving this little guy and allowing me to love him!!"
