Alan shared,

"With a heavy heart I'm letting you know that Bristol was put to rest. She had stopped eating, she slept very little at night and was restless, and her hind legs were progressively getting worse.

My family and vet were discussing her quality of life and really rooting for her, but I knew it was time when she wouldn't eat even her favorite food the last 2 days. It was very peaceful and I will miss her very much as I'm sure you will too.

Thank you for saving her life and giving me a chance to spoil the sweetest dog in her last days here with us."

Tripp

Family: Alison Alongi & Jonathan Arellano
Fans: Jess, Tanja, Bruce, Yvonne Dolinka

Tribute: On May 19th, Ali and Jonathan fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Tripp.

They shared,

"We will never understand how a dog like Tripp ended up at Riverside Shelter scheduled for euthanasia. Emaciated and terrified, but still looking outside of his kennel for someone to get him out of there. Once Frosted Faces rescued him and he was in foster care, you could see that at some point in his life, this was a dog who understood being inside a house and coexisting with other gentle dogs. Not a mean bone in his body; plenty of scared ones, though. That always broke our hearts, that a dog that people assumed to be tough and intimidating was so afraid and anxious himself about the world around him - a sad truth for so many thousands of dogs, unwarranted and unfair.

Tripp definitely understood what the couch was for from day one, and made that his throne. We would even joke about how he would beeline for the couch after dinner, and how he was probably saying “safe!” to himself once he plopped down. The only things that maybe held a candle to his couch were his walks and his meals. This boy wasn’t so much about the mileage as he was about all the SMELLS. Making sure he got all the sniffs in during any outdoor excursion, giving out big goofy smiles to everyone we passed. Isn’t it amazing how much joy a dog can get from the same neighborhood every single day? It was a gift to be a part of it, even if it meant stopping every seven steps.

Was he perfect? Not to some people, probably. Severe separation anxiety meant lots of extra effort to run simple quick errands. For a year, we spent a lot of time and energy showing him that the man in the house was not a scary thing. He was terrified by baths. He didn’t exhibit that Instagrammable snuggly affection that the pittie breed is known for. But for all the things that some people would call out, how many dogs do you know that don’t bark at or jump on visitors, that don’t try to get up on the counters for food, or that would take themselves into the other room for a moment instead of growling or snapping if feeling overwhelmed for any reason? Or a dog from who knows what circumstances, who survived an overrun kill shelter, that would be as gentle as he was with our older non-Frosted Face Riesling. That’s not to say we didn’t feel challenged ourselves with some of his behaviors, but we always knew that none of it was his fault. And even in the challenging moments, how could you look at him and not melt at that little lopsided face? We didn’t sign up “until”, “unless”, or “except” - we were all in for him, and we saw him be so brave in return as we did our best to show him that his life would never be what it was before.

In the end we had to let him run free across that rainbow bridge, where he has no scars, where he is cancer-free, where he’s scared of nothing, and where he will always be the king of the couch. He left us too soon, but then again, when are these angels ever with us for as long as we need them? We know we will return to volunteering, will Fling and foster, and one day bring home another Frosted Face for good, and it will all be to honor Tripp.

We want to thank everyone with Frosted Faces - from the incredible volunteers to Dr Russell and the sweet vet staff, to Kelly and Andy, to the adopters, and the entire community on social media. Thank you all, from the bottom of our hearts, for caring for these sweet creatures.

We love you, King Dood. Thanks for choosing us."

She shared,

"My sweet Alabama crossed the rainbow bridge yesterday. Dr Russell and the FF team made it much easier than I could have ever imagined. Alabama battled her vestibular for almost a year, but I unfortunately started to see major decline over the past month.

Alabama, Bama, Bammy was the sweetest yet so independent. I‘ll never forget the day I adopted her - she walked out to the seating area and once I saw her ears flopping I knew she was meant to come home with me. After being neglected and turned in as a stray by her owners, she really had no issues with me becoming her mom. The second we got home she jumped on my bed and made it her own. We had a beautiful 19 months together and I’ll miss her so much, but I hope she’s a reminder to be patient with pets as they deserve the best life. ❤️‍🩹

Just wanted to say thank you again to the Frosted Faces team for all they do ❤️ and giving me a the chance to be Bammy's mom."

Tribute: On July 26th, Joyce fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Saxon.

She shared,

"I brought Saxon home 10 months ago. At the time all we knew about him was he had Canine Cognitive Disorder (CCD) and some arthritis in his hind legs. He would go on our walks around the block and also would walk around the house and the backyard.

Many months later as Saxon was having trouble getting to his feet Dr. Russell xrayed his legs and found out that he had severe arthritis in his hind legs and one of them had been broken at some point and not set properly.

Saxon was driven to walk and started struggling to get to his feet. If he was having a hard time he would whine and then bark for help. The last month of his life he was having more and more trouble getting to his feet and once up, had trouble staying up. He as also showing signs of CCD when he was eating or drinking water, he would forget what he was supposed to do. He loved to have his ears rubbed, would press his head against my chest, and give a soft whine.

More than any of my other dogs, Saxon was always on my mind. Was he ok? Was he able to get up? I’d check on him to be sure he wasn’t struggling. It’s taken a while to stop the urge to check on him. I know he’s pain free, knows what’s going on, and is running freely. Miss you sweet Saxon!"

Tribute: On October 11th, Stacy fulfilled her promise to Bart after battling kidney disease!

Stacy shared,

"It is with a heavy heart that I write this memorial for Bart. On October 11, I had to say goodbye to my sweet little guy. My life will not be the same without him. I knew he was my boy from the first moment I saw him. He very quickly became my best buddy and companion. He was a very affectionate little boy and gave me lots of kisses. He was always so happy. When I brought him home, he acted like he had always lived there – no adjustment period at all. I knew he had kidney disease and a heart murmur when I adopted him so I knew our time together was limited but I thought we’d be together longer than two years.

Bart was a very strong-willed and happy little guy. He was always very good about letting me know when he wanted to go out and where he wanted to go on his walks. His nose was always working, sniffing everything especially after a rain. He loved long walks until about 2 weeks before he passed. Even after the walks he would come in the house all excited and would run to his toy box to get his Lambie to play with. He would bounce around throwing it in the air and attacking it. He also loved to snuggle and we spent many nights cuddled together on the couch. In addition to two beds, he had his favorite pillow and blanket to lay on. He especially liked going over to grandma’s house on Sunday where he could roam around without a leash and investigate her backyard. He also had a bed and blanket at her house.

Bart held a special place in his heart for young children. He would get so excited to see my 2-year-old niece and many of neighborhood children. He loved it when they would talk to him and pet him. He wasn’t a fan of other dogs when he was on a leash but when he was leash free, he loved being with other dogs. One particular memory I have is at a Memorial Day party at my brother’s house with multiple dogs. A couple of the big dogs were rough housing and playing and Bart decided to get between them and play referee! I was so shocked. He was a brave little guy and so protective.

I want to thank FFF for everything they did to take care of my little boy. All the vet techs and Dr. Russell were always so kind and caring, especially during his transition. I can’t say enough about FFF and everything they do for the animals that otherwise wouldn’t have such a good quality of life. Thank you for letting Bart be part of my life. He will always hold a very special place in my heart."

Tribute: On June 16th, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Memphis.

Memphis was turned into Animal Friends of the Valleys as a stray and not claimed. We were at AFV exiting another dog when staff quickly contacted us and asked if they could throw Memphis in the transport vehicle too. "You betcha!" We owe thanks to Randy and Leslie Hastings for agreeing to be flexible for the drive.

Memphis was adorable as he was sweet, as the volunteers worked to cut the mats off of his tail and ears and cut his nails. We took him straight to the vet where right away they noticed he was pale and did in-house diagnostics. Gosh, he sure hadn't seemed as sick as he presented, we hadn't even considered to check his gums on-site upon rescue given his demeanor!

Bloodwork showed that his BUN was 130, his creatinine was 5+, and his hematocrit was 7. These values were shocking! X-rays showed a belly full of a food from a recent meal, which you wouldn't expect him to still be eating. It was described to us that Memphis' anemia was likely caused by his chronic kidney failure, but it happened so slowly over time that his body knew how to function with those numbers.

Well, we had known Memphis for mere hours and from experience we understood that there was very little left to treat within reason. I sat in the vet parking lot trying to decide what to do, cursing his previous owners for putting this burden on me.

I reached out to the shelter to be sure that he wasn't an owner turn-in, seeking any background I could from his 5-day stay there. Maybe his family would want to know he was dying if we suspected that the Good Sams were his family?

I let Memphis walk around the vet's play yard. Would today be his last day on earth? I squatted down as he trotted up to me and intentionally leaned into my thigh nudging my hand for pets. No. I would take him home for one more good night.

We took turns cradling him upon arrival back at FFF. Alicia took him for a drive to McDonald's to buy some burgers and chicken nuggets. Somehow he had survived being a stray, 5 days at the shelter, and his first day as a Frosted Face would be his last. Memphis passed away on is way home from McDonald's in a soft bed with Kennel Manager Alicia hovering over him.

Hindsight is 20/20 and of course we feel as though we should have let him go that day at the vet, but everyday we have to remind ourselves in these roles, that it is not normal for us to decide the fates of animals we hardly know and we need to forgive ourselves for wanting to extend kindness and share love.

Fly high, sweet Memphis. We wanted all good things for you.

Fans: Hays Family, Mary Arkwright
Tribute: On September 29th, Melanie and Jim fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Judy.

They shared,

"Everyone at FFF told us: “To know Judy is to love her.” How true that!

There was something so enchanting about the way she looked at people, even through those cloudy eyes. Her tilted head and regal posture!

She never made a sound, yet she communicated appreciation and acceptance of her situation.

God only knows how she came to be so thin, and why those adorable long legs failed her.

She lurched, bumped and crashed her way around the house and yard—and got stuck in so many odd places.

We pulled her from under and behind furniture, and marveled at how many potted plants she could destroy on her way to the kitchen!

She ate a LOT. We held out hope that it meant she might rally and recover from what years of neglect had caused.

Most of all, I will never forget how Judy sought us out and let us hold her every night. We couldn’t have dreamed of a sweeter, more loving gesture.

She was silent, strong, and brave. Run on those “getaway sticks” in paradise, sweet girl."

Date of Passing: July 22nd, 2021
Family: Holly Buderus & Kawika Ohumukini
Fans: Luanna Connor
Tribute: On July 22nd, Kawika and Holly fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Azalea.

This was a tough case. Azalea entered the shelter with a baseball-sized mass on her abdomen which they removed. The incision hardly closed and dehisced for days with care, but just weeks later new x-rays showed metastasis to Azalea's lungs and new masses began to grow and ulcerate on her belly. The rapid spread was shocking, and Holly was so strong to realize her suffering and let her go peacefully.

Holly shared,

"Today, we said goodbye to Azalea, the sweetest chipmunk ever to grace the planet. She was our first Little, and what a little rule-breaker she was! She wiggled her way onto the couch, into the bed (under the covers, with her head on the pillow!), and right into our hearts.

Azalea was pure love and joy. Even on her worst days, her tail would wag ecstatically when she hadn't seen us in a few hours, or even just a few minutes. When her cancer-ridden body failed her, and the light in her eyes dimmed, and she seemed to be pleading with us to help her, we knew it was our responsibility as her family to love her enough to let her go. And so, with many tears and kisses, I held her tiny body as she crossed the Rainbow Bridge to join all the Frosted Faces who went before her.

Run free, baby girl! We are so grateful you came into our lives. Your absence leaves a Mastiff-sized hole in our hearts."

Tribute: On November 30th, Lore fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Talia.

Talia was originally surrendered to OC Shelter by her family for being "too old." One person's trash is another's treasure. Sara Burton fostered Talia for FFF and piqued the interest of Lore, Talia's new mom.

We did dental surgery on Talia, extracting 18 teeth, and she was groomed regularly- finished with bows!

She was her new mom's constant companion until her kidney values began to skyrocket and her confusion made it tough for her mom to medicate her eyes. After days of hospitalization and treatments, her labs were not going to reach a range that were compatible with life and quality was dwindling.

We are so grateful that Talia was loved, and loved well, for the last months of her life.

She shared,

"I adopted a what I thought was frail little lamb who shared a name with my mom (Patti). After I noticed her big personality matched her looks, I renamed her after my good friend, Melinda Wulf.

Dogs don’t know they have 'disabilities' so we enjoyed many adventures, despite blindness and CCD. It was challenging at times, but setting a routine with daily morning activity and, later, medication helped a lot. Here are my top 10 memories with Wulfie, though there were many over the past 7 months, in no particular order….

1. Snuggling my “little” mini me

2. Exploring parks with sister Dee Doo and outings with frens Dorothy and Liberty

3. Wine tasting in Temecula and our “private farm” stay

4. Her “happy” howls

5. Regular walks and hikes with big brother

6. Enjoying brother’s enormous chews

7. Flying to Seattle at Christmas to meet my nieces

8. My boss liked her so much we included her in his surprise retirement party bus

9. She completed the Father Joes Villages Thanksgiving 5k

10. She was loved, included and spoiled by so many, including her grandma and FFF staff and friends. I especially want to thank Dr. Russell, Michelle and Lexi for making her exit as peaceful as can be.

Rest In Peace, little wolf. I hope you are having tea parties in the park and adventures with all your sisters and I’ll join you in my dreams.

Kristen shared,

"102 days was all we had together but in that short time Sweet Caroline stole my heart and has left an indelible mark on my life. I miss her little boops for pets and the tap tap tapping of her little feet following me around. Her sassy little personality and strong will always made me laugh. She loved our slow walks around the block, even though it was sometimes hard for her to make it all the way around. The only time she would pull on the leash was to get me to turn the corner on our usual route, and whatever Caroline wanted Caroline got. This was pretty much the theme of the entire 102 days we spent together as I tried to make her as happy as I could. When she started not to want anything anymore except to sleep and walking became a struggle, I knew her time was near. She passed away in my arms showered with tears and kisses knowing she was loved. Later that night, I was walking past a theatre with tear filled eyes questioning my decision and when I looked up there was a preview poster for an upcoming performance of none other than Sweet Caroline. I burst into tears knowing in that moment that my little girl found a way to send me a message to let me know that she’s ok and ease my broken heart. I will love and miss my sweet girl always.

Tribute: On June 25th, we fulfilled our promise to Rosalie.

Rosalie was a stray to OC Animal Care on May 26th and was not claimed. She had chronic diarrhea that was not responding to care so they placed her on the OC Rescue Track's Special Needs list. On Friday, we exited 11 Frosted Faces from OC shelter and Rosalie was one of them.

The morning of exit the shelter emailed to let us know, "I just got word that Rosalie is not doing well today. I have attached her medical history. She may need to be taken directly to a veterinarian." The shelter had not done diagnostics yet to determine a cause, so we proceeded with the exit to get her the care she needed. A veterinarian examined her prior to exit giving her fluids and a Cerenia injection, and loaded her up with volunteer puller and transporter, Jodie Reyes.

Rosalie passed away an hour into the drive down to Frosted Faces Foundation with Jodie holding her paw. We understood she needed and deserved treatment immediately upon rescue, but did not anticipate that she would be exited to not withstand a two hour drive down to San Diego.

We performed a necropsy on Rosalie when her body arrived at the vet that day, and Dr. Lipman let us know that more than half of her intestines were gray and necrotic. There was no free fluid in her abdomen, visible perforations, or torsion. She said it smelled terribly like sepsis and perhaps intestinal cancer was the cause of her decline and passing. We are having her body cremated and her paw print impression returned for safe keeping.

We are so sorry Rosalie spent her last days in the shelter instead of with her family. Perhaps a microchip, some ID tags, and supervision outside would have kept her home. Knowing her best, her family maybe even could have pursued diagnostics when they noticed her demeanor change and offered her a death with dignity.

Thank you Jodie for holding Rosalie in her last moments and being so strong.

We are so sorry, Rosalie.

Tribute: On October 15th, Lynn fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Greta.

She shared,

"The first time I heard Greta's story, I knew I wanted her in my life. She had been at FFF for over 30 days with no one showing any interest in adopting a skinny little 10 year old girl who was "a little bitey" as they put it. While it took time and a few bites, with patience on both our parts, Greta turned out to be the sweetest little girl and most wonderful companion. She was such a funny and sassy girl.

I believe our struggles to overcome her fears and trust issues made our relationship strong and extra special, at least to me it was. Greta deserved a better life, one without fear and neglect. I hope that her last two years made up for at least for some of those years she suffered through. A new life in which she could be happy, playful and not fearful of anything. I was with her till the end, but Greta will always live on in my heart.

I am forever grateful to Lauren @peakepups whose fostering and wonderful videos introduced me to Greta for the first time and FFF for bringing us together.

I cry myself to sleep each night clutching the stuffed sock monkey she loved so much. I cannot put into words how much Greta was loved and will be missed."

Tribute: On May 19th, Rosie fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face GG.

She shared,

"It is with a broken heart giving the sad news GG died unexpectedly Wednesday morning on our trip in Colorado. She was asleep in her cuddle bed next to my bed. At around 2am she started crying out and panting and then soiled herself. I wiped her up and get her settled back in and kept my hand on her soothing her. We both fell back asleep, and when I woke to check again before 4am she was gone.

She had had a normal good day. A wonderful one in fact. We were in a beautiful cabin in scenic Ouray, Co.

I was able to take her body, still in her pink bed, to a pet crematorium in Montrose in the afternoon and I flew home heartbroken without my travel buddy. She went everywhere with me, she was the easiest, most chill dog ever. On the flight to Colorado we were in bulkhead so she spent the flight cuddled on my lap and chest. I wish I had taken a picture, but I remember the feeling.

I’m in shock because I thought we had more time, she seemed healthy again. She ate well, her fur was soft like a kitten, and when she was happy and getting zoomies she’d hop like a bunny. The cutest thing. She didn’t bark, didn’t know how to growl and would let anyone give her love and she’d lean into the pets and scratches.

I’m so sorry. She was my love. My little girl."

Tribute: On July 9th, Shawn and Holly fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Landon.

Landon was a stray to Humane Society of Imperial County and they reached out to us for a quick exit. Poor Landon had a stiff gait and a very obviously large testicular mass. What surprised us more, was that although there was light in his eyes and life in his steps (once he was up), his renal values were terrible, reading at an SDMA 55, creatinine 4.7, BUN 86, and phosphorus 9.8.

Holly and Shawn offered to take Landon on a Frosted Fling part of THE STORM, and just a week into their Fling they noticed Landon declining. He would not eat, could not stand, and his heart rate was very fast.

We re-worked him up to find his creatinine had skyrocketed to 7. We did aggressive fluid therapy and medication, but it did not buy back his sparkle or strength. It was shocking to see Landon decline so quickly and unfair.

Maybe the solace of a new home is all Landon needed for his body to relax and let go? Shawn and Holly finalized the adoption of Landon just hours before his passing so he could go to sleep in the laps of his "final family."

Holly shared, "This morning, I held Landon at College Animal Hospital and sent him along ahead of us. He was only with us for a week, as a Fling, but he had our hearts. I am glad he got to call us his family at the end and did not leave this world alone. This past week, he slept on comfy beds, got all the snacks he could eat, was pet, kissed, and cuddled endlessly. We love you big boy, we will see you again.

Wendy shared,

"I’m devastated to let you know that my beloved and cherished baby Pippa (Quizzie) passed away last Tuesday.

I’m beyond sad and even though I only had her for three weeks I adored her and we had so much fun and love.

The morning before she passed we were up at seven as usual and she had her favorite delicious breakfast and then we went to the park for two hours , came home and she lay down in her bed as she always did for a long nap after we come back from the park when I next checked on her about an hour later she was gone"

Tribute: On April 26th, Scott and Heather fulfilled their promise to Frosted Face Yumi.

Yumi was a stray brought into IVHS and not claimed. She was a shy, dainty girl who was lucky enough to be scooped up by fosters Valerie and John Herrera while she waited for family.

Sweet Yumi had a painful back end and was not eating well, which led to diagnostics that discovered a bleeding liver mass. This was a terrible surprise to the family, where bloodwork and x-rays months earlier had no indicators for concern.

Needless to say, Yumi's family was heartbroken, wishing there was more they could do for her to make her comfortable and buy more time.

We are so grateful that they chose to love her and gave her every last good day.

Tribute: On January 12th, Heather fulfilled her promise to Frosted Face Moe.

She shared,

"People have sometimes asked me how I “choose” my rescues, and the truth is, I don’t really know. I just fall in love, normally with a picture or paragraph about them, and most often, never having met them. That was Moe. He popped up on the adoption page and it was love at first sight. So much so that I took a one-way flight to San Diego and rented a car to drive him back to Pennsylvania (he had long legs and wasn’t really a candidate to fly).

Moe was never the picture of health. Blind, deaf, and scrawny (no matter how many steakums he ate, his weight never topped 14 lbs). This didn’t phase him though. He slept (a lot) and would meander around the yard sniffing his way around, never scared, even with his disabilities. Moe hated being held or having extended amounts of affection…but every time I picked him up, he would nuzzle into my neck for a brief period and let me love on him for a minute. It was like he was sniffing me to make sure I was his owner and not an imposter.

Moe came to us in August 2021. I have no idea what hardships his life brought but I hope those memories were erased! Moe (Moe-sie, Mosif, Big Moe) I loved you before I even met you and through your last breath early this morning. You will be missed and forever loved. Someday I’ll see you on the other side sweet old man❤️"

Date of Passing: July 23rd, 2021
Family: Frosted Faces Foundation
Fans: Jill Knipp
Tribute: On July 23rd, we fulfilled our promise to Frosted Face Benny.

Benny was picked up by Humane Law Enforcement and the shelter asked if we could exit him. Bloodwork showed that he was in end stage renal failure and it happened quickly. One day he was chasing new friends and humping them, even requiring a squirt bottle correction, and the next week we were doing subcutaneous fluids and begging him to eat.

We hospitalized Benny for three days until we received the call that he was having trouble regulating his temperature and his values were not improving.

Andy rushed to the vet from work to be at his side and let Benny pass on. Benny's body was so tired.

Andy shares,
"I was honored to be with Benny at the end. You could tell he was a wonderful little dog and deserved all the love in the world. It's hard not getting a chance to see a dog, like Benny, thrive while they are with us. Sometimes they come to us when it's too late. But, I like to think that he held out and held on until he felt the warmth of sincere love one last time before deciding to let go and say goodbye."

Thank you to volunteer Marites for the extra love you showed Benny from his freedom ride to his final days.
